Is it truly the worst thing in the world?

yes. just try with the mods, for me its a nightmare.in multiplayer environment, where people just slam everything into this one big chest. its just add pain more than spamming chest with neatly labelled for each item.
i think its somewhere in workshop with name cellar

It's why I'd lock it to post rifts. I think that a system of organization would be established after you've defeated every single boss. This isn't something that would happen on day 1 or even year 1 often enough.

Is it because items are still registered as being loaded into an area when in a chest?

Yeah, it is as if they were just on the ground.

I don't know if that's the case, but I do know mods could be responsible for the lag if they want to grab a lot of info about the things in chests and share it with everyone.

To keep game more realistic, dev decide to turn players's inventory slots in to 2 slots instead of 15, as normal person only have 2 pockets.
And backpack? 3 slots.image.png.5dbb7379305ac0f226dae0d15fec47fb.png

storage gets expanded by 5 times the slots by drilling into the earth and having storage act as a cellar.

*uses drill on a boat or dock*

Not gonna lie, that sounds like an interesting challenge mode. Really will change up how you play.

Items in chests shouldn't be loaded until the chest is opened, this is what causes lag.

We really need better storage solutions and there is nothing wrong with what @chirsg suggested.

Chests should only cost 1 board in their current state.

Wait really? Well time to never build another chest. Geometric drop or die.

bro, not ironically, someone knows a mod that leaves the inventory with less slots? Like, 5 slots or something

Because sitting destroy everything stored in back pocket, dev decide to just make it inaccessible so players wont accidentally put pearl's pearl there.
Else it got crushed.
