Wigfrid skill tree speculation/wishlist discussion: Shield craft.

Recommended Posts

Pre post bullet points:

- Craftable on her Shadow/Lunar alignment choice

-Planar defense with possible planar damage bonus IF it functions like the shield of terror

- Can be fixed with void or brightshade tools

If Wigfrid gets a shield craft, what would you want it to be? What slot should it take up?

Should it be a body slot item where she "Parries" attacks similar to the snurtle shell? Should it just be like the shield of terror?

Before making this post, I actually thought it should be like the shield of terror on the lunar side, but a parry body slot would be interesting too. Backpackless Wigfrid would be a cool concept.

I did a very shallow amount of research and in norse mythology exists a shield that blocks out the sun, Svalinn. It's also attributed to ice.
My impromptu idea is if it functions like the shield of terror, each 4th strike should freeze the opponent and if it's like the snurtle shell with a parry, hitting a timed window should do an AoE freeze around Wigfrid.

I'm not too sure how it should be in the hands of other survivors. My idea of the freeze effect should correspond with inspiration, so that other survivors do not benefit from effects.

Anyway, a lions share of these ideas aren't objectively the correct way to go, this is just spaghetti on the wall and I think these are great ideas.

The only criteria of a bad idea is if it's NOT a post rifts craft. If any of her new crafts are day 1, it's a bad idea.

What do you want from a shield craft? Opinions more valuable if you actually play Wigfrid.

I've had an idea of Wigfrids skill tree introducing two sides of kit (similar to how Wormwoods one looks).

At one side we have part that expands her stage-play persona (More songs? Better Inspiration?), on the opposite  of the spectrum we have perks that expand on her being a Valkyrie. Mainly, allowing her to craft items that come from Norse myths. I've thrown here and there ideas for something like Gjallarhorn, which could work as Hostile Flare for Rift content.

I think these should be combined. Her new weapons and armor should be something that interacts with inspiration so that other characters won't benefit from them more than wigfrid does, nor would they render the default post rift gear obsolete.

The discussion is shields though, but this has been a really dead thread. I suppose people are more interested in throwable spears than shields.

Big fan of wigfrid having a parry system. If you successfully parry it could stun a mob for abit or do damage. I would want the shield to take up a body slot and not be a weapon like the shield of terror.

Parrying could cost inspiration to use. A skill to allow wigfrid to passively gain inspiration recharging to the first level only would be useful and allow wigfrid to use her books outside of boss fights abit more.

Wig main here.

Body slot for shield would suck for me, that's where my backpack/krampus sack goes.. no thanks. Would basically rarely if ever use it.

Ideally I'd like to be able to use it as well as a weapon but without it taking the body slot. This seems a bit tricky and too strong though. Perhaps the shield would come with a weapon as the one item, like a spear and shield combo item in handslot so to use the shield you must use that weapon as well. Weapon would need to be strong to make it worth it. I also don't want the shield to provide armor like shield of terror, it should simply provide a parry/unique ability so you still need body or head armor. If it's too complex or weird to make it come with a spear I'd be happy for it to be a combo weapon and armor like shield of terror instead just not bodyslot please, no thank you.

Parry ability sounds great on paper but would need to be done well (on console too) so it isn't janky or on the flipside too strong. Perhaps it could have a decent cool down so you can't just parry every melee attack bosses make and absolutely shred them. Would be neat if instead of stunning an enemy it gives you a big boost of inspiration (one segment) and a  boost temporarily that reduces inspiration loss. That would make inspiration and songs usable against mobs as well as bosses. Parry the first attack of a mob and gain one inspiration segment. If it's a decent group of mobs or long enough fight you can perform another parry and get a second song activated.

This sort of effect could probably just be done with skills though so maybe not.

Definitely have more thoughts on this and her skill tree overall (song book and weapon rack please!!) buts it's super late and I'm tired so I'll share them later. I actually want to try and come up with a skill tree for her just for fun.

I mean just drop your backpack? 99% of the boss fights in the game are player initiated, theres no surprise, so is it really that much of an issue to just drop your backpack somewhere safe for 5 minutes while you fight like you would with other body armor, especially if the shield comes with a perk to completely block all incoming damage? Theres gotta be a tradeoff somewhere or else its like playing with godmode on..

Yeah true but a shield isn't worn over your body, its held in your hand. Just doesn't make sense shield taking up the body slot. I'd like the perk that blocks all damage to have a fairly long cool down so that it's not too strong.

Also we literally already have a body slot armor that blocks all damage - bone armor.

A unique shield for wig shouldnt just be a bone armor reskin..

Wig none-main here (but I like sticking my nose where it don't belong)

So with my very limited knowledge of wig here I go-

It should be a song, the shield should not be an item at all. It's a song that costs x inspiration and it gives her the illusion (delusion more like) that she is holding a shield made from her own, uh, imagination? I mean a shield bestowed to her from Valhalla itself, so make it look ethereal and shiny. Plus it plays into the theme that her delusion gives her placebo battle effects.

The shield blocks one attack and makes her recoil a bit, but not too much (mostly to keep her from getting stun locked immediately after, it sends her back a bit out of reach.)

This could tie in with other skills that help gain more inspiration, lower inspiration cost or give free songs after some requirement is met (like after killing an enemy). The other flat cost inspiration songs are kind of meh so I'd like to see more.

Call it: Fortifying Falsetto

Yes, this is the ONLY song with falsetto in it. No, I'm not forgetting about any other songs with falsetto in it.

Joking aside, they can work up to it idk. The shield could be ethereal AND fiery so that it can offshoot from fireproof falsetto (just delete it Klei don't try to make it work).

I also feel if it's added as a replacement, then skills can work to improve the song like: add a short invincibility after the block, reducing recoil for more dps, and maybe even do some dmg as a counter after blocking (based on her weapon's dmg so it acts as a free hit after every block).

Edit: Would also work in tandem with other skills that reduce the animation of using songs. Or just give it a unique short one.

Edit 2: I also feel like working it into her inspiration allows Klei more freedom to make it more powerful. It's not something you can just craft and forget but rather incorporate into the way you fight. Also you have to trade songs for it, and if you spam it you lose more buffs.

Honestly? Just that. Don't even really need a shield.

Genius.

I feel like the skill tree will most likely be about her inspiration meter. Maybe adding the ability for more songs to be played (more inspiration capacity), slower drain during non combat (looking at you, dragonfly) and then maybe some damage buffs and/or maybe improved or aligned versions of her helms and spears, with specialized planar damage and defense depending on which alignment you pick. Im no game designer, but the way the skill trees have been so far, this is what makes the most sense to me.

Wolfgang got multiple new dumbbell crafts. Woodie got 2 crafts from wood and Wormwood got the ability to craft berry bushes and literal spirit animals.

I don't know what to say if klei decides that Wigfrid does not get crafts. I'll be speechless.
