Make body temperature visible stat

Recommended Posts

Irl i go outside and if it's hot and i know it's hot before i start dying of heat, it's cold i know it's cold before i start dying of cold.

I know there's very popular mod for that but i thought it's unfair something you can do on PC or irl no problem is not available for console players

overheating/freezing screen overlays (there's even a sound effect played reaching 67/3 degrees):

Its such a short warning window tho. I guess if you are wearing a beefalo hat/eyebrella it extends that warning window by abit but it would still be nice if there were additional quotes to say when you are rapidly losing or gaining temperature if not wearing insulation gear. This would be a nice QoL for new and older players.

Im a fan of vanilla DSTs lack of stat numbers. Too many games nowadays or mods for DST show too many numbers... it breaks the immersion and doesnt suit DST.

so true!

the window of overheating/freezing could be 60/10 degrees respectively

Having a feel for freezing and heating up is part of the game for me. It's pretty hard to learn from it though (without numbers) which has lead to me accumulating some bad intuitions about how these mechanisms work.

And do you also know that if a spider bites you exactly four times you will die, but if you eat a butterfly wing before that you will live? You know that you will starve to death in exactly 1.5 days? You know exactly how long every piece of food will sustain you for? Realism is no argument for this, and there already is more indication than before you're dying since you first start doing animations, then you get an overlay on your screen, then 5-124 seconds later (depending on insulation) you start taking damage.

as notecja said there are idles for temperature aswell as for hunger, you can even know if another player will need to warm/cold/eat. The only thing missing is HP when outside of battle (while fighting you can see them being damaged by enemies..)

there is 0 need for this, only devalues such cool detail and makes players pay less attention or even make them less likely to be caught off guard like that famous mod does

Bigger warning window is prolly much more needed than any stat addition. Having indicator that you will freeze soonish is prolly better than warning then immediately freezing.

If you're using a thermal stone the stone gives a great indication of when it's going to expire (plus a bit of time after it expires before you freeze), and if you're using insulating clothing you'll have a warning of 45-124 seconds (depending on insulation). Extending the window that shows the overlay wouldn't really help anyone other than someone who has no protection at all, and would just make you have a useless overlay for a really long time that isn't actually warning you of impending freezing since it's on your screen for 10 minutes.

If the overlay was decoupled from your temperature and was instead based on how long it is before you start taking damage based on your current insulation it could be standardized to a certain number (such as 45 seconds, the current realistic minimum), but I'm not sure how helpful that would be. It also might look weird to instantly get rid of the overlay when you equip clothes then instantly get the overlay when you take them off.

I like this, a more transparent overlay as you approach the current threshhold would go a long way.

Yeah, I don't like too many informations too, especially if it is about something the character can't know (like the HP of mobs). But the charakter should know about his felt temperature as he knows about his health, hunger, sanity and wetness. The temperature is the only character stat that is hidden and that makes no sense. Could be a small meter fading from red to blue.

Apparently DST players have never went outside in real life to know that if it is snowing, it is cold.

Ok but seriously, you don't need to know your exact temperature to figure out that if it is winter, you need to wear warm clothing, likewise with summer.
