i mean, isnt like 2€ is giving them boats and drugs xD
the more people who play the game the more popular will become and more people will buy skins

Fear not, it's the same as most games with similar business models.

1. support will never end

2. updates will dwindle into nothingness but klei will never say DST has "ended"

3. significant issues or bugs will remain so forever and then you will realize klei spent alot of dev time into trivial, cosmetical features that could otherwise have gone into fixing more impactful matters

4. the playerbase/servers will never die unless there's a significant sequel released

All they need to start doing after that is add in community made items during each mandatory seasonal update/event and stop actual updates then it would sound like another game I know...... TF2

I’ve had a slight change of opinion: If DST “dies” then Klei will have moved on to something bigger, and better-

After playing The Matrix Awakens (this is NOT a game) the Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo- I was blown away at how close to “real” it looked- And if the games on my new Xbox can look like THAT: Then DST could have much bigger content rich biomes then what I’m currently playing.

The thing holding DST back from becoming that next gen quality game, is Klei is still designing content to be compatible with last gen hardware.

Thats okay I guess.. but if you have a PS5 or an Xbox Series X you absolutely have to download Matrix Awakens- Even if you don’t like the Matrix at all.. it’s NOT a game: it’s a Demonstration of UE5 & god is it beautiful :)

mechanics>graphics

dst has mechanics that a lot of AAA games can only dream

also, klei seems to like cartoon graphics. Maybe a cell shading survival fantasy game? so we can have something good instead of the mediocre valheim (i really regret buying it because of the balance and mechanics...), the lineal grounded or the coming soon™ little devil inside...

While I think appearance is important, mechanics should have more importance. A game can look awful and still play great, and vice versa.

or look awesome without next gen graphics

It’s not about appearance, it’s about getting the same game with much larger biomes, new mobs to inhabit those biomes, new weather mechanics & physics systems etc…

Graphics and Graphics alone do not make the game enjoyable.

But if it always rained in the Marshy Swamp turf, crows actually landing in the trees, Always snowed in an Arctic biome, each biome having its own weather, mobs, gameplay elements etc..

Thats how DST: Expanded & Enhanced edition pushes boundaries that current DST stays limited to last Gen hardware & can not.

Basically the differences between GTA V Xbox 360 edition vs GTA V Xbox One Edition and coming in March: GTA V Series X/S Edition, or to put that into a category of “not just prettier graphics”

Building interiors, vehicle interiors, first person camera angles, More Missions, more game modes, more players, Working Casinos, etc etc etc..

In fact: I eagerly look forward to GTA V on Series X/S as long as the difference in Content is as much as 360/Xbox One are present. Because if it’s Just fancier graphics: No thanks I already bought the game more then once why would I buy it again for a 3rd time?

It extends far beyond just prettier graphics.. and I hope Klei will announce on their 2022 Roadmap what (if any) plans they have for the New Consoles.

The only thing I absolutely demand in that case: is the ability for me to host or join worlds my last Gen friends can play within.

Similar to how if you buy Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 on Xbox Series X, you also get a free copy of the Xbox One version to play with your friends who are still on last Gen consoles.

I look forward to the roadmap as well. Then again newer consoles don't effect me that much but I know it is still important.

Absolutely, but at the same time: being able to play with your friends regardless of what platform they are on should be equally important, Klei has stated they want to turn DST into a Crossplatform game at some point in its future.. But- there are a ton of hurdles they will need to over come before they can consider that.

For example: When I bought my Series S console I had the massive headache of a problem of most my games no longer being playable with my friends who were still playing on the Xbox One, and what’s worse: because most of those games automatically update (for free) to next Gen Versions: It’s no longer compatible with Last Gen players, this was a HEADACHE when wanting to play games like Watchdogs Legions, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Enlisted, etc..

I eventually just decided to plug back up the old console in addition to my new one so whenever my friends on last Gen consoles invited me to play, I can just swap consoles to the last Gen console.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 realized this issue, and granted the purchaser two copies of the game (next & last Gen) so I can still play the old version with my friends who can’t yet get a new console.

I bring all this up… because if Klei decides to release a next gen DST or make current DST Crossplatform capable: Playing with friends will be limited to what platforms those friends are playing on (for example you will need to play last Gen THPS 1+2 to play with a friend on last Gen consoles) With DST- This could be applied to world Gen settings, game mode versions- ETC but ultimately: You’ll have to play by last Gen rules if you still want to play with your last Gen buddies.

Im no game designer, I can’t say how easy or how hard that would be: But what I do want is for Klei to detail to Me what (if any) plans they have for supporting the next gen hardware, while at the same time- still allowing me to play with my last Gen friends.

If they just continue to add content to DST: It will eventually reach a point where it’s no longer playable on last Gen hardware, similar to how when Klei done something as simple as animating the character floating head icons in the compendium: Last Gen hardware suffered from it- so they had to add an option in settings that disable those floating blinking heads.

But like I said I’m no game designer, and someone like Hornette could probably explain it far better than I ever could.

Doesn't legacy minecraft (aka the minecraft on xbox 360 and ps3) multiplayer gamemodes such as spleef glide or hunger games, still function because the entire thing is peer to peer?

So, if DST were to lose server support, could we technically still play if klei allowed peer to peer online?

  Reveal hidden contents

or maybe i'm saying false information or something idk

This is essentially what I'm hoping DST will become at some point, at least if it ever "ends". Games like DOOM (1993), Sonic Robo Blast 2, SRB2 Kart and Open RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 have taught me that the best way to keep your games alive is to keep them open and totally independent. Of course DST isn't open-source (although I wish it was) and the way it works now means you depend on Klei's master servers for a lot of features (certain emotes, reskins, entire characters). Sonic Robo Blast 2 also has that master server to list your server up and connect with just about anyone playing, but you can still do just about everything if you were only hosting a LAN party in the middle of nowhere. With DST, if you tried to do the same you'd be stuck to that very limited offline mode that's okay but not really part of the whole experience. You can argue there's no reason to keep cosmetics around, but the possibility that I won't be able to play as the funny clock woman ever again if nothing keeps DST alive bugs me a lot.

I really hope that the entirety of Don't Starve Together could be experienced without necessarily needing to be online just like multiplayer DOOM and Sonic Robo Blast 2, I want that preserved in my computer so I can keep the fun going no matter what.

as long as they able to fix all the bug (unlike DS), finishing DST is actually a good thing imo

then we will have a stable version (unlike DS) for both player and modder to play with

they can still making money without the need of adding new feature via skin pack, the Terraria collab show us so many possibility when it come to skin, allow them to keep runing the server

then maybe we can have Gorge and Forge return every year

I love DST and despite wanting it to keep being updated like Minecraft, I don't think the game desgin of DST is able to being updated with new feature forever like Minecraft

I know that doing this will slowly kill the old fanbase but tbh, at some point, we as the og fan should move on and let the new generation take out place

Bold of you to assume that DST will ever be finished or die. It's already been stated that you can host your own servers. And technically you don't need to be playing multiplayer. I usually play solo; in an online world since I want drops.

Does anyone think the story will be concluded any time soon? I don't. There's too much left unanswered, too many issues unresolved. If DST "ends" when the story does, then it will be a long time before that happens.

Well that's the thing, "hosting your own servers" is just referring to keeping worlds up and running. Those aren't the servers I worry about, it's the way bigger "Here's the news, here's your gear, here are the things you can earn and the other worlds you can join" thing that worries me. That will die eventually because Klei likely won't be able to keep the game in development forever. It'd be nice if they could, but I really want there to be some kind of safety net so that whole experience that connects to Klei's servers can still be had if Klei ever actually got rid of their server. There's a lot of content locked away that way and I don't want all these cool outfits and cosmetics and emotes to just be gone for a long time.

If my issue wasn't being able to host my own worlds, then I could just host LAN parties and solve that problem.

Depends mostly upon community activity at that time. So long as there's still an active modding community, the 'online' components can be made to work. Several of them were figured out in another form before DST actually existed; several have been cloned/recreated for other purposes since.

The variables are how many hoops people might have to go through to get that working, and the quality of the full experience.
Those will depend on what state the game is left in.

There are actually a number of old games out there with abandoned multiplayer components, that their community patched and revived; long as the passion's there, games are immortal.

Command and Conquer is a great example. You can load up a server list for Yuri's Revenge literally right now.

That's true enough I suppose. I guess it is silly for me to expect this game to just kind of die off like that, even if the developers completely abandon it. Maybe I'm just paranoid about this game getting abandoned and being left as just a memory to myself and a lot of other people, without every aspect of it being something people can experience. I'm glad modders have found a way to add skins to custom characters and stuff like that, but I really wish I could just know that DST will be preserved and playable forever like Toontown and Command and Conquer apparently are.
