How do you guys utilize Plug Slugs after early game?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to combine Plug Slugs with my other power generation, but I can't get Jumbo Batteries to play nicely with Smart batteries. They discharge at a different rate, so I can't automate fossil power production, and I'm not a fan of building twice the number of Smart batteries as Plug Slug backup (Currently using 10 Jumbos for 3 Plug Slugs, and they top them off easy)

Any automation shenanigans that I'm missing?

Would a transformer leading from the plug slug ranch to the fossil fuel battery cause the jumbo batteries to discharge into the smart batteries provided sufficient 'overhead' (so set the turn from green to red signal at a low but non-zero %)?

What I don't like about plug slug, that they eat metal ore, so I would never tame it, just for saving my precious metal ore. Another thing is hydrogen which plug slug produce. On one hand it's very small amount on the other hand it's annoying to deal with it.

Overall I don't like pulg slug at all, usually killing them or leaving them enclosed in natural environment and never going to open them.

Build a transformer from ranch battery to main grid and hook up automation wire from smart battery to transformer instead of power gen building.

Huh, I'm not sure what this does exactly when I think about it in my head, but I'll give it a shot. Wouldn't the generator keep working infinitely then though?

I agree that those things are inconvenient, but even with the irritating Hydrogen they are worth it early on if you start the second asteroid with a rancher. Only one of the Slugs can keep your colony going for really long until you develop, and Cobalt is abundant then.

If it's on second asteroid, it's a bit different, but I would keep them wild. Use some incubators to increase population and keep my cobalt ore to myself

I have to admit that after early game, no more plug slugs unless printing more from printer pod.

But recently I tried to put wild plug slug with Expr.52B. The lonely tree needs some friends so I print some eggs and put them on the platform. I know that may not be a good resin production line. Just to test some idea concepts.

Here's what I meant.

In used to store them in a room with water lock. Otherwise, they might suffer from overcrowding (quick sandbox drawing. Cable is wrongly placed).

However, if you don't feed them with precious metal ore (I never do), they produce way too little energy for the effort.

Thus, now I just store them away with all the other wild critters for free meat and eggshells.

you have very weird room with water lock

Well it's a critter-lock not an air-lock. It does not seal it as a room, but technically no critter can escape.

I think in survival I also had ladders to give my dupes a dry passage.
