Shine bug functionality

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have been playing with shine bugs and to be hones, I can't find any good application for them in the base game, especially in the selective breading to get the radiant bug. Yes they increase decor but you can do the same much easier with furniture. Yes you can use them as a source for energy (light) but there are much better ways to do that too. They are also expensive to feed - you have to have a meat farm or use diamond, which is one of the mid game and early late-game materials.

It just begs to use them for radiation production. I saw there was a concept of ionizing bug in the game but it's not used. As far as I know there is no difference in radiation production between shine bug types. Why would anyone bother to mutate them if there is no real value in that but only increases the cost of feeding?

this question made me pop in mind at year ago when i fully level them up to diamond . i not bother them anymore as there no difference expect the cost

light self would be useful if map is actually total dark. this days in not matter at all

i hope they make one day a map what is actually a dark. and you to need build lights at there otherwise you not see nothing

I think we need a way to cage them like birds. Imagine using them like a lamp. There would be a ranching station where the rancher would put them into cages. Then a caged shinebug could be put on the ground or hanged on the ceiling for decor and light or for radiation generation. That would make it easier pout them where we want them without weird shenanigans like weirdly shaped water locks. A caged shinebug would need to be fed and would lay a single egg during it`s lifetime even if tamed. Feeding could be done via an auto sweeper.

IMO the ionizing bug should be put in as well and eat something like solid nuclear waste or depleted uranium.

A shinebug reactor is a self powered radbolt generator, and you can litterally get thousands of radbolts per cycle from one with a lot of shinebugs in it. I've found this to be one of the best ways to generate radbolts as it doesn't use any resources except for a bit of phosphorite in the breeder ranch. As for the base game, if you want to get the super sustainable achievement in a colony, using a shine bug reactor ( or 2, or 3 ) is a great source of transitional power to get heavier industry going and whatnot, so you can get the materials to build thermo generators and other fun things.

There is a mod for that, thanks to @Cairath

I played with it before. Lots of fun! Especially since it can be configured that dupes received reduced attributes when they are in different levels of darkness.

If only there were Charlie sound effects when the dupes went into the darkness. Love that aspect of Don’t Starve, but then again this isn’t the right forum for that :P

That may be a good DLC idea?
