My game doesn't go beyond 10 fps (low end pc)

Recommended Posts

A friend gifted me ONI recently and I've tried a few optimization tweaks (like setting app priority to high, using full-screen,  downloading optimization mods,  disabling vsync) but no matter what I do, the issue still persists.

My specs are 4 GB Ram, a 2.16 GHz processor, and an Intel pentium inside. (Laptop is Dell inspiron 3000) its a potato.

Is there anything I could do to improve the situation or should I get used to the slow gameplay?

Clean your base and keep all derbits in one tile. It reduces amount of heat-exchange calculations to 1 tile for those derbits.

Don't use ladders as cheap, temporal, outside floor - they open new paths for dupes to travel and the path-finding becomes too complex to calculate quickly.

Reduce amount of space your critters can walk in. Best solution is when you keep all animals in one tile, separated from the rest of the room with liquid lock (so they don't get overcrowded on this 1 tile). Ofc you can't fit grooming station on that one tile, but the idea remains.

...or just kill all your animals.

Have little duplicants, don't go superbase with 100-200 of them.

You can search for some mods with smaller maps, it should help too.

4 GB Ram

Are you running Windows 10 as well?  If so, then I'm sorry.  Your potato is exactly that.  Maybe a light linux version could get you running. You can barely open Word and Chrome at the same time on such a potato.  Trying to run ONI ... I'm surprised you get 10FPS. :)

It's not as bad as you make it out to be, I can run Dst, spelunky 2 and even minecraft with some optimizations at a decent enough 30 fps, 60 in some cases and I can also use a browser engine along with discord and word with not much issue at all.

I feel that if oxygen not included had more options relating to performance, like a customizable lower internal resolution or an option to decrease effects like gas on-screen, I could run it more smoothly, but I've yet to find mods that do that. (I've been testing by decreasing window sizes and it seems to be better but I can only see so much if I do that.

My potato running on windows 8.1, when it had 8GB RAM, could let me play ONI until 200-300 cycles without making the game crawl (I also used to put too many shine bugs everywhere just for decor that didn't help...). After upgrading to 16GB of RAM base game didn't have any problems until 1000-1500 cycles. DLC though... DLC after the latest updates is trying to make fries out of my potato...

Does anyone know what the minimum specs are if one would only be able to play 64x64 tiles, 1 asteroid ? I would be really interested to know. Many thanks in advance :afro:

Perhaps there is a mod to make this kind of game play possible  Maybe it would be possible to play the game on a fridge freezer, there surely is a home brew linux fridge around which can run min specs. Maybe there is a dual core fridge from Samsung or Bosch with external display out connector ?

I saw this video sometime ago with someone playing doom on a true kitchen fridge cpu and fridge door factory display.

With 64x64 tiles maximum a 2GHz cpu, 4gb memory and slow-mo components could perhaps run oni, I don`t know what the engine takes as minimum memory with such a map size handicap ? @MinhPham do you perhaps know ? :p:confused: Is there a way to limit the game to 64x64 tiles somehow, with no other worlds/asteroids and without space map ? Perhaps some stuff can be stripped from the games engine to save memory ?

What about converting all art files to ascii, is it possible to deacivate all animations via mod(s):confused::confused:

ascii-art-gif-4.gif

Is it possible to run the game in 640x resolution fullscreen :rolleyes:

@JosePapp I hope you get forum user solution answers to play ONI faster :p ...Before the DLC times it was easy to create a small game map by default , which would help you greatly. Perhaps ask around how to change/reduce the default map sizes with the dlc ( the base game has adopted to the dlc in terms of world generation ). Perhaps someone is so kind to tell you here ? :p Perhaps @MinhPham can help on this one :ghost::encouragement: Its about reducing the default map sizes without totally screwing up the world (biome) generation. Perhaps there is a mod which does not itself add to cpu load and which offers reduced map size default options for players ?
