Every Stinking Game

Do you guys complain about everything just for the sake of complaining?

There are gameplay toggle options for a reason you know.. don’t like Wildfires but love Summer..? Turn Wildfires off.

hate summer all together? Turn it off too.

Meanwhile in real life I try to buy a single roll of toilet paper and the last 4 stores I go to are out of stock.. this is ridiculous.

I wish DST had more game toggle options.. maybe I want a world generation similar to Single Player DS’s Archipelago campaign chapter (where the Biomes are broken up into the own unique islands accessible via, Wormhole, underground cave tunnels or in the case of Shipwrecked or DST- By Boat.)

more options to turn on/off certain features. Want a server with no caves on Xbox or PS4? The option to turn them completely off does not currently exist.

Keepin it real. In my case I like to play things as original as possible (yes, even disease), hence no complaints, but wildfires can get nasty.

Surface-dweller here, checkin' in.  Here is how I deal with summer:

1.  Umbrella, thermal stone, materials for small endo fire on hand.  (One time I was so focused on making sure I had enough rapidly-withering GRASS, I ran out of _nitre_ instead. That was a fun night...)

imgonnafry.png.19fc67018b100d06dbbe9a3b9801542b.png

(how did I live?  Turns out there was a nitre-bearing rock right near the entrance of the forest.  THANK GOD.  I wouldn't've been able to make it to the actual rockland without any cooling first...)

2.  Trees are your friends.  Stay near them whenever feasible.  As long as they're not on fire.  : P  Me, I've put trees along the main roads I use, which helps in all seasons--even when there's no bad weather to shield you from, they still make a nice landmark, for when you can't check the map without getting hit.  In summer I can run by them for some shade, and in winter they show where the road IS even when it's covered by snow.

(Pictured:  My "road trees", at the end of the long summer.  Ignore how huge they are; that's a mod.  I use these mods 'cos I like the look of huge untouched primeval forests in my world.  More wood when chopped down, but same amount of shade.)

3.  If I don't have the right materials for a flingo (usually missing a gear) in time for summer--and this is a LOT more likely to happen to me, since I randomise the season lengths for funsies--I go nomadic.  Last month I ended up with a MUCH longer than normal summer, but I just hung out in forests for shade, pigs and some food and in the savannah area of the Dragonfly's desert for rabbit meat and cacti, and it turned out fine.  It was kinda stressful towards the end, when essential supplies started _really_ running out, but for the most part I just ended up with an album's worth of vacation slides to bore people with.  : P  (like some of the pictures I'm using here...)

3. What about wildfires AWAY from base?  Yes, I have indeed thought of this too...you can't put flingos EVERYwhere, and also keep them fueled.  Especially when playing alone, as I usually do.  (And in a world where it might go directly from winter to summer, without warning.)  Fortunately if you're lucky, only PART of a forest will burn down.  There are natural firebreaks around the world.  Just...try not to be near or in any of those REALLY dense forests if you can help it.

cherrytreedevastation.png.4c6d4a3401c282b88b3b41583eaf20df.png

The black hole-in-the-world shapes in the foreground are burnt cherry trees (this is from a mod, obviously) but notice that everything else, including the delicate little pond-flowers, is _just fine_.  I was WORRIED what would happen to this place if I stayed in/around it during the summer, but the damage ended up being recoverable.  I chopped these down for charcoal, got cherries off of living trees and replanted them in this area later.  (I would've used a picture that didn't involve mods, but this is the best "Look, only PART of it burned down!" screenshot I currently have, so...)

Of course, my "advice" here basically boils down to "Don't camp out near spider forests", but other than turning wildfires completely OFF, I dunno what else to say.

I personally don't like to turn features off entirely unless I absolutely HAVE to.  Maybe _down_ at times, but if something major from the game was completely gone I'd kinda miss it.  Even the annoying things.  To paraphrase a favourite line from Babylon 5:  "Summer's a pain in the butt, but it's OUR pain in the butt!"  :)

To sum up, in case this was TL;DR:

1.  Plant trees.

2.  Umbrellas: They're not just for spring anymore!

3.  Carry endo campfire materials with you.  DO NOT JUST ASSUME YOU CAN ALWAYS MAKE IT HOME IN TIME.

4.  Go nomadic if you can't make a flingo before summer.

(EDIT:  Of course, all the above only applies to surface life.  I just wanted to show how summer can be okay even WITHOUT going to the caves.  : P)

If you're playing on the stand-alone Don't Starve, yes, but not on DST, caves are 100% safe during summer so you definitively should reserve your caves exploration for summer, it's a great deal.

Safe except for the antlion dumping rocks on you, at least.

I can get through summer on the surface and not have everything burn down as long as I carry an ice staff. That goes for singleplayer RoG too, although getting there is harder if you have the bad luck to start in spring. I also prebuild an endothermic fire as soon as I have a science machine, and carry nitre and grass when summer actually hits. That makes the antlion my biggest problem.

I actually think this is something waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay nicer from this guy than what it does on the surface :D (not gonna refuse some free rocks !)

SUMMER REWORK WHEN?

If they Rework summer I hope they make it Harder.

trees are on fire, animals spontaneously combust.... there should be heat resistant mobs in Summer.

the Forges Magma Golems would be a good mob to roam about when everything is on fire..

Salamander should roam in fire variations.

Etc...

Frankly I just want summer to be more _interesting_. Like, a new area you can only access in that season or something.  I realise that's harder to do now that we have sailable oceans, but my original idea would involve a stream that dries up into nothing and lets you walk across into a summer-only biome.

Not sure what would be there yet, just, it'd be nice if summer had more _content_.  :)

(Mike's idea basically sounds like Volcano Season, with meandering fire lizards... : P)

it's already impossible to survive in the summer without a flingomatic or going into the caves.

why would you torture me like this.

Honestly, heat exhaustion is less absurd then a giant, bipedal deer with a single eye.

The Deerclops is a monster. If monsters existed, why couldn't there be one like that? Heat exhaustion, on the other hand, does exist, and it's nothing like that.

But you play as Willow.. why does it matter if the tree is on fire or not to you? lol..

Jokes aside these are some good summer tips.

Another good Summer tip that many people probably are not aware of is-

Spoiler

You DON’T actually have to travel all the way to a Rock Biome to get Nitre, Sometimes simply just mining a couple Petrified Tree’s will reward you with plenty of Nitre.
