wd_
So, this is a concept that I've been thinking about for some time now. It's not overly useful but has its applications for sure. Main mechanic/exploit: launching one small rocket to the nearest asteroid takes 650 kg of water and the exhaust trail of the steam engine generates way more steam than that. Even better, when the rocket comes back - the process repeats! So, why build rockets up top when you can build them down below? Profits: In my tests, I've managed to collect 2700 kg of water from one ride. Also, it comes in the form of 200C steam, which means power. A few steam turbines placed along the way gave me 1025kJ, which over the course of 2540 seconds it takes to launch a rocket, get it back and refuel it amounts to 403.5W of power generation. Costs: The rocket takes 650kg of water that we get back in the process, you have to evaporate it though. Let's say we're doing it with an aquatuner by cooling down water (which is not the most effective way) and that we need to increase the temperature of water by 10 degrees just to be sure (it should be less in most real cases). Heating up 650kg of water will take 46 seconds of aquatuner work, which is 55.7kJ. Operating refuel gas pump for 650 seconds is another 156kJ Apart from that it only takes 75% of one dupe's time (when he doesn't have to eat, breath or go to the toilet). Balance: All in all, as an isolated system with one trapped maintenance-free dupe, this should give you ~2t of hot water (800g/s of water) and 813kJ (320W) every 4+ cycles. I'm sure it can be made even more effective, would love to see your comments or better versions of it. ruhrohraggy
Have noticed and exploited this behavior with rockets, but considering the plethora of geysers now, I don't know if I'll bother with this anymore...I have a p-h2O geyser, 2x cold steam geysers, a steam geyser, a saltwater geyser, and water geyser on my current map. :S Can do the same thing with petrol rockets and recycle the co2 via molten slicksters. Silos are definitely the way to go for recycling purposes. cpy
I wish i could convert one of my 3 salt water or cool steam geysers to chlorine, since i don't have one in oassis. Yoma_Nosme
You could harness more heat if you would use the engine heat ... I mean the heated floor the rocket takes off from...7 layers of diamond with radiant pipes running through should suffice I think Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/110875-generating-free-water-and-power-with-steam-engine-rockets/#findComment-1248894 Share on other sites

If I understand correctly how rockets work, I should not be losing any heat, because it just stays with the steam. The main thing for me here was the water generation because I was looking for ways to get water without geysers (on any map). Yoma_Nosme
Yes sorry. DarkMaster13
I don't understand why the exhaust for steam rockets is so hot though. This is a reaction-less mono-propellant rocket, the steam should come out at the same temperature as you put it in.... DreamApart
I see! This is what's inside a steam geyser. cblack
There's an old post on the forums here somewhere about capturing rocket exhaust, but I believe it was more oriented toward petroleum fueled rockets. In any case, it's quite doable. Unfortunately, late game when you're using > 4MJ/day, 1MJ of energy for that much dedicated map space just isn't worth it. And you typically have water coming out your ears by the time you can build this. That said, on a geyser-poor oasis map this could make a lot of sense as water is at a premium there. No, there's rather-magical heating 7 tiles down from the base of the rocket on takeoff, separate from the exhaust being hot. In the setup shown in the first post, you are losing most of this heat to abyssalite and magma (a little bit should be returned from the top layer of abyssalite, due to buggy interactions leading to it rapidly exchanging heat with the water on top of it). So, ideally, you should replace that abyssalite and magma with a little stand, probably with a tank full of water and diamond tiles on top, so that you can extract more energy. For petroleum rockets, this is a bit of a bigger deal because there's more heating, easily enough to turn enough oil into petroleum to refuel if you manage the heat exchange right. Ultimately this whole scenario is from rockets being sort of an afterthought. The heating they do to their launchpad is bizarre and they really should only let out as much exhaust as they use as fuel. 10 hours ago, DarkMaster13 said: I don't understand why the exhaust for steam rockets is so hot though. I think Klei wanted to make rocketry more challenging by having SCALDING HOT STEAM burn your dupes and justify actually putting the thing in vacuum rather than some cheesy solution with it way below the surface, but in practice it's just rather janky and clearly has kind of the opposite effect.
