Ok. The previous solution didn't work all the time. Here's one that always works. It's also much simpler and smaller so that's great.

The trick is the pool of water. This is 500kg. Enough to force adult hatches to jump out and never jump in again but not enough to drown adult hatches and hatchlings. Eggs will still also be incubated as normal. The open pneumatic door separates the two rooms.

The mechanized airlock is opened once per cycle for 2% of the cycle. If set to 1% then the adult hatches will not jump out of the pool. When the mechanized airlock closes all eggs, egg shells and meat is pushed to the right into the pool while the adult hatches stay and gets buried.

Any ideas on how to feed them? Trying to get it to work with tamed hatches.

@Yunru I don't understand the way you do it. I have more then 30 mixed hatches and they get no "cramped", because area is open.
What would be the advantage of your system?

they will get cramped at some point

Keeping the door open because I'm too lazy to have a dupe do it :p

That makes sense... I personally tend to use temperature sensors. I for some reason (erroneously) thought you couldn't set clocks to 0 or 100% active.

Your design is nice... two issues, one minor, one not quite so minor. Minor issue: you want a third output, as you're now also producing coal. Slightly less minor issue: there's no way to tell if you've added enough rock or not. Can hatches eat diagonally?

They can't, but once the sweeper's collected any egg shell, coal, and meat in the lower output, it'll put any rock in the top output, which'll re-dispense it atop the hatches (this is also why the sweeper's on a clock).

Thanks. Keep in mind that this a concept design. It for testing my "pool dispenser" idea that replaces the old cumbersome "pez dispensers", and combining it with @Yunru idea of using doors to bury hatches.

So in a practical build it shouldn't be a problem to add a third loader if needed but you probably actually need a fourth one for recycling uneaten ore.

You can precisely measure how much ore you feed each cycle by using a conveyor shut off on a timer. Each second the shut off is on lets 20kg of ore through.

As an aside, tamed hatches will only maintain their population, never increase. So you also know exactly how much food they'll eat per cycle.

There's also the caveat that it's a really long term strategy as it takes 100 cycles before you get the first meat out of them.

A question though. Have you observed them laying more than one egg in any one cycle? Because it does appear that if one hatch lays one egg then even at 100% reproduction the other hatches does not until the next cycle when there's no eggs present.

That would put a maximum cap on the number of hatches that could be stored unless you get yet another loader to pick out eggs as they hatches lay them.

I haven't, but then I didn't put all the hatches in at the same time so they'll be staggered.

The long wait times are what makes it so hard to test everything, grrr.

Yeah. Back when I intensely studied pacu ranching set up I spent a lot of time, far too much in fact, just waiting for cycles to tick over due to the life time of the critters. And hatches have 4 times as long life cycles.

I have a band-aid fix: Just open the door more often.

4 times a day for 5%of the day is more than enough time for them to lay (they'd take 62.5 days to reach 100%), and would allow up to 400 hatches per farm.
