"Realistic"/"Raw" difficulty setting

Recommended Posts

So I'm seeing a bunch of threads here of people wanting more tricky mechanics vs people worrying about new players.

How about introducing a "realistic" difficulty setting that does not artificially make the game harder by tweaking numbers but instead introduces a few more hazardous mechanics to keep players on their toes?

I'd see it as independent of hunger/disease rates (I understand the appeal but I don't like this kind of difficulty scaling myself). But it would introduce things such as:

- untreated slimelung can kill dupes again

- food poisoning causes vomitting

- extreme heat/cold can kill dupes with no insulation

- condensed chlorine causes chemical burns for dupes walking through it

- whatever else fits the theme

Throw in some achievements linked to the mode and I could see myself trying to brave it :p And I'm sure some veterans could appreciate something like that as well for the more noble intrinsic rewards :D

Sorry, posted this more like a pondering/reaction to another topic I've just read in this section. I guess it turned into a suggestion meanwhile and should be moved.

As much as I like mods, it's different when the setting exists in the game. Mods often don't care for balance, go out of date and get abandoned, not to mention they can break stuff, especially in a game as resource heavy/complicated as ONI. Plus there is no guarantee that a compilation of mods would create a consistent, cohesive experience unlike a difficulty level would.
