My early game is a mess

Recommended Posts

This is what one of my big, pre-planned builds looks like at cycle 52. It'll look good when it's done, I swear!

Despite appearances, there is actually a reason for most of the *ahem* "design decisions" here. That big chunk of sandstone underneath the portal is actually a heatsink for the farms. Similarly, the weird natural borders in the upper base ruining the shape of the barracks are keeping the chlorine out (mostly) while I dig out the hot rock and deprive it of it's half it's thermal capacity.

I've got no excuse for the misplaced tile in the washroom, though.

The line for that bathroom  in the morning has got to be a terror.

Two shifts means half the number of dupes going to the bathroom at the same time. With enough shifts, I daresay you could support a full 35-dupe colony with a single toilet.

Cycle 125, and it's... coming together? Sort of?

Oh who am I kidding, it's even more of a mess. No symmetry, not enough mess tables, chlorine in the farms, hatches and shinebugs living together...

I am histories greatest monster.

You mean you don't put pufts, hatches, shine bugs, pips, and whatever else the printer can spit out together in a big mess and continually go eggshell hunting? Maybe it's just me, but I don't see any point right now to ranching that isn't dreckos and everything else is just free decor and polluted oxygen cleanup.

I take back everything I said about it coming together. This place is going to hell in a handbasket, and frankly so should I for creating this abomination. What even is this mess hall?

In my defense... no. No, I can't defend this. This is bad and I should feel bad.

how do you support that many dupes?

If you mean gameplay-wise: Low expectations. I've capped their morale at 9 and they mostly only learn skills they get morale bonuses for.

Also, predicting which resource I'll run out of next and dealing with it before it happens. Get electrolyzers up and running off of geyser water before you run out of algae, start ejecting heat into your sewage-water with an aquatuner before base temperature becomes an issue.

And pause a lot. I spend twice as much time paused as I do playing the game.

If you mean computer-wise: Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.00 GHz, and dropping down to 2x or even 1x speed when the lag starts getting to be too much.

At what point are you literally going to ask us to straight up tell you it is soooo horrible?

I mean, I could provide. I just need a written approval to make sure it is ethically acceptable.

Oh I don't need to be told, I just wanted to make sure everyone else could share in the horror.

That moment when, after spending 20 cycles dragging lead out of the oil biome piece-by-piece because your Operators are not cross-trained in building or carrying, you finally get the last piece of  high capacity cable laid and covered up with granite...

...and realize that the result is horrendously ugly.

I'm going to have to tear this up and come up with a different solution. Maybe if I run the cables along the outside of the shell it'll look less bad.

(Edit) Yeah, that looks so much better:
