SixbySix
Other than timed doors locking dups in certain areas of your base during the day, does anyone have any suggestions for reducing travel time? Seems like that by turn 150 or so I will always have the "long commutes" warning. Thoughts? -SixbySix Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/103432-reducing-travel-time-automation-strategies/ Share on other sites

Lilalaunekuh
11 minutes ago, nakomaru said: Reducing travel time is really tied to the layout of your base and what jobs you have given to your dupes and where. You should spend time watching them and see if there's anything you can fix. Right now some jobs are not really counted as "work". Sweep/store tasks are the traveling with a resource. If we don´t consider store tasks, it comes down to which continuous tasks you are able to automate. ( Water sieve ? Coal generator ? Kiln ? Deodorizer ? Everything around your "kitchen" ? ...) Spoiler If you schedule enough down time the message will disappear Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/103432-reducing-travel-time-automation-strategies/#findComment-1160791 Share on other sites
PhailRaptor
I believe the idea is to force not only per-Dupe specialization, but also regional specialization in your base layout. For example, the only thing your Chef should be doing is cooking. The "commute" for such a Dupe could be quite short, if you organize for it. Give the Dupe a private Bedroom and Washroom, from which they go straight to work in the kitchen. They only stop to eat in the Great Hall, and spend some down time in the Rec Room. Put a Ladder between the Kitchen and the Great Hall, with the Rec Room below one or the other, and you can ensure that your Chef spends almost their entire day actually working. You can do the same thing with the Power Station for your Electrical Engineer, if you have all your Generators placed in proximity to each other, or along a tight Tube network. Or with your Ranchers between your Stables. You can then largely replace or remove the Courier as a job, with adequate use of Conveyors and Sweeper Arms to do the moving of resources from one area to another, and loading resources into fabrication buildings (Grill, Farm Station, Power Station, whatever). It's harder for Miners, Builders, and Mechtronics Engineers, due to the nature of their work. When you're embarking on a new moderate or larger scale construction project, you should probably spend a little time first making a work outpost nearby. Mess Hall/Great Hall, bedrooms, bathrooms, and all the infrastructure that goes with all that. Once you're finished, you can get on with the actual construction project, because your Dupes will simply wake up and go to work, instead of having to travel from your core base around the Printer Pod to get wherever you are building. SharraShimada
This is a feature, that needs to be optional. The message pops up it ONE of so many dupes takes a long walk. That doesn´t make sense. I have 20 dupes, with 1-2% travel times, and one with 40+ because delivery. Yes i KNOW he is walking half the day, so what? I do not need to be reminded of it.
