Ah it means the caves in that server are disabled. That's kind of strange as most dedicated servers allow caves as almost half of the game content comes from there. Still they are by default disabled because in DST a separate server is used to run them so it is sometimes too much strain in people's internets and computers, causing lag. Unfortunately it cannot be changed once the world is generated and as there are no caves in that server you're stuck with those useless closed cave entrances where there would have been actual cave entrances in a cave enabled world.

It means that there's an issue with the caves server, best to contact an admin of the world (if you know any), so they can restart that shard.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but afaik sinkholes in this state show that the world does have caves, but it failed to connect somehow.

Exactly...

This also happens when there is a rollback happening because the shard disconnects.

I've seen this several times in my games and on klei servers. Those are spikes blocking the entrance to the caves. But when I was in caves, sometimes I could see the stairs blocked, so I couldn't get out. For me this usually happened when someone (me or another person) died. I don't know what is the purpose of this.

I'm sure Charlie knows, since she is responsible for those things happening. Rose spikes are the proof.

Usually that happens in the public servers when a new update was added in the first days. I remember those things mostly from Forge and Winter Fest events. Then, they're removed in the next world's regeneration.

(A bug might be the reason of this special situation.)

It would seem that the shard gets disconnected there too because some weird stuff happens where the master world gets updated first and then the rest which causes disconnects...

Probably, a matter of compatibility. Like old case of rock lobster in Don't Starve, crashing the game (by travel from caves to surface).
