Help! My chef will not cook

Recommended Posts

I hate to ask yet another question, "why won't my dupe do the thing" and "the priority system is broken" because I know those threads are repetitive and it's almost always user error.  But I cannot figure this out.

My chef is standing idle.  The electric grill shows recipes queued, no red icons.  It says "Current order: Stuffed berry".  It has the ingredients as contents.  The chef has his priority "cook" set to highest.  I'm not sure what else I could do.   I've restarted too. it's not helping.

The dupe here is Hassan the chef:

Hassan stands idle next to the grill:

Am I bugged and the colony is toast or not?  I'm out of ideas.

try emptying the storage on the grill

Weird.  So I did that, and all the dupes, including Hassan, immediately filled it back up.  And no one will cook.

Then I tried cancelling all recipes and emptying the grill.  They didn't fill it back up this time.  So I addred a Gristle Berry, and they cooked it!  It might have been the recipe itself that was bugged.  Thanks!

I think it's getting bugged on the Pincha Peppernuts.  As soon as I queue Barbeque or Stuffed Berry, the Grill gets odd amounts of Peppernuts in its contents, and it blocks all cooking.  You can see in the screenshot.  I didn't actually see if it adds up to 1kg or not.  It might be a floating point error.  I will try composting the peppernuts and seeing if that can sort it out.

you might be right, if partial peppernuts can't stack then it will fill up the grill's storage before reaching the required 1kg

my theory turned out to be incorrect so your idea might be best

Try to provide Non-slimelung infected peppers and bristles.  If you dupes eat food infected with slimelung germs, they will get food poisoning very rapidly and puke everywhere.  Slimelung will also make your ingredients go stale rather quickly.  This might be the cause, as the dupes don't want to cook peppers with slimelung on them.

Of course, if you are trying to generate extra polluted water by giving your dupes slimelung infected food, then this certainly is the way to go!

I think you are confusing slimelung with food poisoning

also germs die when cooked

I've fed my dupes slimelung infected food and the dupes don't like it, 1/2 my colony was puking everwhere.  This was quite a while ago, so I maybe wrong.  I was wrong once back in the 90's, it turned out I was just a little bit high.

The germs may die, but if you expose food/ingredients to slimelung, they go bad quickly.

I also noticed that, that the mushrooms were there in the queue.  I cancelled the fried mushrooms order and it still didn't help.   I posted the autosave file from 1 cycle before I think, when I was sure that the dupes were stuck.

Here it is.peppernuts.sav

I checked it out. The issue indeed is too small individual peppernut quantities. Seems like a bug where the individual quantities do not stack.

What I did was walling up the grill with your chef inside so he could not go do anything else. He refused to do any activity on the grill. I deconstructed and rebuild your grill. The chef did fill up new grill with the ingredients dropped on the floor, but he did not started cooking. I again decontructed the grill, moved the peppernuts outside the area, and moved a flat 30kg peppernut in the area, and rebuild the grill. Sure enough he started grilling again.

My advice in your game: deconstruct the grill, mark the small quantity peppernuts for compost and move in new peppernuts.

I made an error. There was simply too little pincha peppernut available.

I did a quick test by feeding healthy dupes nutrient bars with slimelung germs

they ate them, did not become germ hosts, immunity stayed at 100%

only germs they had where surface germs which can be washed off

Yeah sorry, you are right.  It's not the mushrooms.  However, I believe it may be the peppernuts. Same deal, very limited number of dupes can reach them it appears.  You have set a very low priority to supply for all dupes, I think that's the primary issue.  It appears only Nails and Ellie can leave the base, and they have other stuff with higher priority they are working on.

Edit:  Okay I confirmed this by raising Ellie's supply priority to max.  After delivering some coal to a generator, she then delivered the remaining required peppernuts and Stinky cooked them up.

Certainly having not enough supply of the peppernuts increased the chances of there being an odd amount available.

The supply advice is interesting, I'll take a look at that.  I reduced this because I ended up having dupes bring copper from the nearby volcano into the base, which made everyone so injured that everyone's athletics was really bad.  I didn't want them running around outside and well, it's just recovered enough now.  But I think the colony is falling apart for a variety of other reasons, all related to having 90% of my dupes hobbling around.

I don't think it makes any difference if ingredients have a low freshness or a high germ count regarding cooking. If it's in the grill in the right quantity it will be cooked. I think it only makes a difference if the dupe eats if there is fresher food available.

So yeah, it's a quantity issue. You have 2 packets of peppernuts, one of around 500g and another of 700g. The game is unable to merge those and get to a 1kg+ quantity needed for the recipy requirement.

When I loaded up the save, there were only about 1400g of peppernuts in it, so it needed 600g more to make the BBQ.
