About This File

These are some super simple tools I made for Don't Starve years ago, recently updated and re-uploaded myself seeing how popular they were. I still believe you should use the official tools for texture creation, but for simply viewing and exploring assets this tool should work great for you.

Source code and latest releases are always available on GitHub.

I get the following when I try to click to download the file:

Sorry, there is a problem

We could not locate the item you are trying to view.

Error code: 2S328/1

I feel like a huge idiot for even asking this but how do I get this to run? I downloaded it and it's filled with .CS and no actual program file to run it like a .EXE. This is my first time modding DST and I really could use these tools for some help.

I used the latest build to create a modicon for my custom dst character using the Extended Sample Character Template, using the recommended settings I found on another forum post, but the modicon.tex file that it creates crashes the game as soon as i click on "mods" or "host game". When I replace the new modicon.tex with the original modicon.tex, it stops crashing. Has anyone else had this problem? How to fix?

It says that the file couldn't be found. Does anyone have a link to the download that works? Unless the download does work, and I'm just an idiot.

When I use the TEX creator for the icon of a mod, using:

  • Pixel format : DXT5
  • Texture type : 2D
  • Mipmap resize filters : default
  • [Generate Mipmaps]: Ticked
  • [Pre-multiply Alpha]: Ticked

a .tex file is created alright, but if I try to use the icon .tex, the game crashes as soon as I open the "mods" tab or the "host game" tab.

Do we need an update?

Running DST A New Reign v214437 on WIndows 10 x64

The app doesn't close out completely, the process is still visible in Task Manager. I can't quite kill it; the private memory just goes down from how ever many MB to 64kb, as with all applications that are stuck on closing.

What can I do?

Oh, actually, I tried the older version 1.3.1 and that worked for me.

Thank for mention this!!!

If Anyone experienced CTD no matter what you do, maybe you are using the 1.4.1 version like i was, try the 1.3.1, it's worked for me too.

Something about it throwing an exception? It doesn't matter how many times I try, opening a .tex file with the textool doesn't work

Thank you so much Klei for linking me to this wonderful tool. And thank you Matt for allowing us to easily access this in the public domain.

I tried it and works perfectly well.

Go to wherever the Don't Starve file is located > go to Data folder > then right click a TEX file and select Open with Choose Another App and select the TEXTool that you have extracted from the downloaded ZIP file. This is done because I don't have any other apps on my Windows pc that can view a TEX file.

Now you can view the file that results (it makes it possible to view the file as a photo) and and save it as PNG, JPEG, etc., so that you can do all kinds of mischief.

I'm nearly two years late, but to anyone else having this problem, what I found was that if you set the texture type to 2D then it actually turns it into a 3D texture, which DST can't render. So instead of setting the texture type to 2D, set it to 1D which is actually 2D for some reason.

TLDR: Setting the texture type to 2D is like letting a Willow in your base, don't do it!

Please tell me why I cannot open files by double clicking (nothing happens), file association is enabled (TEXTool.exe). I know that *.tex files can be opened with a double click, but for some reason it doesn't work for me. Opening each file through the program explorer is very inconvenient and time consuming.
