Is there a way to fill up a normal battery and a smart battery at the same time? So that when the smart battery is full the normal battery is also full?

you can do this with 2 smart batteries and power shutoffs

automation will allow you to switch between the smart batteries so only one fills at a time that way when both are full, so it the normal battery

So shutoff power to the first when its full and let the second one charge. And vice versa?

bingo, I did a build a long time ago to charge a large battery bank when smart batteries where first added to the game

however I don't build those any more as smart batteries alone is more effective

I use batteries for my solar power since theres no point disabling them with automation.

I would use smart batteries as much as possible, as they have a reduced power loss per unit energy stored.  Of course, I use regular batteries if I feel I am short on refined metal.

Nah. I'd rather have double the capacity for solar panels so I get as big a buffer as possible.

I don't feel that big of a need for a buffer.  Then again, I try to run nat gas generators constantly for the water (especially when I get a crude oil => nat gas machine running), so maybe I'm not the best person to talk about solar systems.

I've had 3 consecutive meteor showers followed by nighttime.

I would agree that you don't want to have a small buffer if your primary power source is solar.  I would like to be clear though that my suggestion called for lots of smart batteries.  Rows of them.  You don't use them for the automation (unless you want to use them to turn on nat gas generators or coal or something).  The downside would be that you would need twice as many and, if you have enough solar, you don't really care about wasted power.

Why would you use normal Batteries when Smart ones look smoother?

Oh, and there is 80% of the heat production~

(Personally I prefer Refined Metal simply because of its Thermal Conductivity)

if "looks" are more important than efficiency

and you can build normal batteries with steel so thermal conductivity is just as good

Can't argue with that :p

Although to be fair they have a good argument. Batteries does offer double the capacity, making the runoff irrelevant ( what does it matter if you loose extra 2.677j/s when you have extra 20kj which is the equivalent of 12cycles! ); it also might be a good source to dump your low tear materials in the end game; and finally the extra heat generation might be a boon if you have your steam turbine setup near by!
