Spitballing: Combat Upgrade

Recommended Posts

I've previously discussed ways medicine and hazards - two of the three aspects I currently find lacking on ONI - could be expanded.  Today I'll be tackling the third: combat.

New Stat:  Attack

A Duplicant's Attack determines how much damage they will dish out during combat.

New Job:  Soldier

Leveling a Soldier increases a Duplicant's Attack.  The three tiers are Private, Sergeant, and Captain (I'm not crazy about these names, but alas they were the best I could come up with).

New Building:  Armor Forge

The Armor Forge is a specialist building at which higher tiered Soldiers can turn 300kg of plastic and 2 reed fibers into a suit of Body Armor.  Body Armor reduces the damage a Duplicant suffers when attacked by hostile critters.

New Room:  Armory

An Armory must by at least 12 tiles and no more than 64.  It must contain an Armory, but can contain other industrial buildings.  Any Duplicant wearing Body Armor gains an Attack boost so long as the colony has an Armory.

New Critter:  Shockworm

An exceptionally aggressive, insectoid species. It has three specialized organs which discharge electrical shocks to stun prey.

  • Shockworms will attack duplciants on sight.
  • Shockworms have 150 health and drop 3600 kcal of meat when killed.
  • Shockworms can be found in any biome and cannot be tamed.

New Critter:  Volgus

A skittish mammalian creature. It moves in herds for safety.

  • Volgus periodically spawn from a Volgus Den, which can be attacked and destroyed by duplicants.
  • Volgus will flee to their den when approached by duplicants, but will attack en masse if their den is attacked.
  • Vogus have 100 health and drop 1600 kcal of meat when killed.
  • Volgus are native to the Dirt Biome, but can burrow into other biomes in search of food.
    • A Volgus can only burrow through a natural tile, and doing so does not destroy or otherwise disturb the tile.
  • Volgus will eat any food they find lying on the ground, and they will gnaw on exposed wires.
    • A wire damaged by a Volgus has a chance of starting a fire.
  • Volgus cannot be tamed.

New Disease:  Red Fever

Volgus are sources of Red Fever germs.  Volgus spread these germs to tiles they walk across or burrow through.  These germs decay over time (and at an accelerated pace on Plastic Tiles), but are unaffected by temperature.  Duplicants, Hatches, and Dreckos can contract Red Fever germs when walking across infected tiles, and Volgus can directly infect Duplicants they attack.  Duplicants also gain Red Fever germs when eating uncooked meat dropped by critters carrying Red Fever germs.

The Red Fever germs carried by Hatches and Dreckos are reduced when they are cared for in a Stable.  Hatches and Dreckos who do contract Red Fever will become aggressive, attacking Duplicants and other critters on sight.  A Duplicant who contracts Red Fever gains +50% stress per cycle, greatly increasing the likelihood of triggering a stress response unless the disease is treated quickly.

Other Changes

  • Hatches will now attack Duplicants who attempt to wrangle them or who dig up the tiles in which they are nesting.
  • Players may change Critter Aggression Levels at any time in the Options menu.
    • Normal - no change.
    • Defensive - Shockworms and critters suffering from Red Fever will only attack when attacked.
    • Pacifist - Shockworms and critters suffering from Red Fever will not attack Duplicants or other critters.

And that concludes my three-part discussion on ways to improve medicine, hazards, and combat.  I'm not sure what the future has in store, but hopefully these aspects of the game will be fleshed out as the game's development continues.

This would be perfect, referencing both pig and rats and how they carry diseases.
