Unless something I'm not aware of has changed, I don't think I'm going to have any problems unlocking the research tree... I've rolled another +16 learner and a +16 digger. I think, even though the tooltip for "Quick learner", "Mole Hands" and other stat-boost traits still say +3, they are actually significantly higher. They might even be a percentage of the base stat. This could be another symptom of that issue.
