Soulwind
I don't typically load up the previews, but I had a little time this morning and since the update should release today anyway; I figured why not take a look. The map I started up has around 36 Dreckos easily reachable from the starter biome, and quite a few Pacus swimming around too. Not sure how many are on the whole map, but unless they are all concentrated right in the spots I can see, there's LOTS out there. How many critters are spawning on most maps? Is this just a seed with an amazing number of critters or is this normal? BionicSandwich
the amount in the world tends to not matter, mainly because you can make more through domestication and egg hatching. I did same, however my world has some critters but not a lot and I can't see any Pacus at this time and only have found four hatches. I'm annoyed, I found a spot that had five shine bugs, normally at the start I use shine bug areas to grow a few bristle blossoms, but all five died within 30 cycles!! They did lay an egg before they died but the eggs are not even 50% incubated. I don't like this fast die off of wild creatures..... Soulwind
My last map that I was running in MK1 had a whopping total of 3 briar seeds and 1 (yep 1) hatch in the entire starting biome. Did have a bunch of shinebugs in one of those ruin sets though. Otherwise it was an interesting map, just not really good for ranching Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/90449-wow-thats-a-lot-of-dreckos/#findComment-1032298 Share on other sites

suicide commando
I still don't get why people want shinebugs, they eat, but they don't produce anything. suicide commando
How so? They eat bristle berries, and give off light and décor.. light can be made with a simple lamp, which is probably far more efficient than feeding those things. I don't see how they can result in a positive feedback loop. Even if the berries are wild, a simple lamp will provide you with the light as well, and it's not very space efficient. suicide commando
As I've never tested them, do they provide more/cheaper eggs than say, hatches or slicksters? Because unless they provide a lot more, I don't see any use over say slicksters to get eggs. I can feed slicksters from the CO2 exhaust of my NG generators, thus recycling my CO2 into something useful. ( eggs and oil/petrol ) I don't see how shinies can match this, as they require bristle berries or phosphorite, both of which are far more precious than CO2. BionicSandwich
shinebugs do not eat a lot, especially when wild. shinebugs also live long enough to lay one egg when wild, so you could end up with a small, limitless supply of bristle berries. also, I think shine bug reproduction is the same as pacus, not sure, but when wild, both have a 7% reproduction increase per cycle. When you domesticate them, Shinebugs produce a looooooooooooooooooooot of eggs over their lifetime. More of an early mid game solution, since you have to have a surplus of Berries to make it happen, but it's overall low effort and high production. Mariilyn
8 minutes ago, suicide commando said: do they provide more/cheaper eggs than say, hatches or slicksters? Yes. They lay one egg every 1,5 cycle (+67% reproduction increase) and the standard shine bug eat only 200g of food per cycle. Tamed sunny morph consume 300g of mushroom per cycle. (Numbers are taken from the in-game tool-tips). suicide commando
Ohh, I see, I guess that does make them a nice source of eggs. I guess I'll have to see about ranching them next upgrade. BionicSandwich
the cool thing is that if you get wild bristles, you can have a shinebug farm that uses fertilizer as the only imput, in order to boost the rates of wild bristles. I thought you needed plastic for the lure and it wasn't really working well? I kinda think of plastic as an end game product but maybe that's just me. Lunali
Honestly what worked for me to get them in a stable is I'd pick up eggs, deposit them into a ration box and build the stable around them since the darn things flutter around so much, worked like a charm for me. When you grab all you can, just empty the box and presto, all the shinebugs in one location.
