Probably the most efficient storage compactor design that I just found

I found out that storage compactors work even when they aren't on a tile so I decided to make this...

I've only been playing the game for a few days but from what I know this is the most efficient layout for storage compactors except you would have four or maybe even 5 compactors next to each other instead of 2 like I have in the image. To do this you simple build a compactor on a tile and then remove it,you then place a tile 3 spaces below and build another compactor and repeat this process.

My ultra-compact storage(credit to GrindThisGame channel on Youtube):

I empty it when it fills.  There is another not far away that I use to quickly copy settings back onto it.  Of course I have some other storage for slimy stuff and hot stuff outside the base.  As expected, the decor there isn't great, but they don't spend much time there.

A ladder can "serve" two tiles to the left and right, you don't need the middle ladder.

Relatively convenient high capacity arrangement is this. You can repeat it horizontally and vertically any amount of times and all compactors will be accessible:

If you want to go even higher towards the absolute maximum, you don't get a convenient square:

Am I the only one who uses a single compactor and just drop the material to the floor when it fills?  makes for a lot less compactors in your base and then you have 1000 tonnes on a single square but not penalty to decore throughout base.

@andrough there is a 100,000 k limit on materials in a pile, last I checked, so this will start deleting things at about 5 compactors worth of 1 materials in one place, over that, poof

@chemie

I've been looking more into compacting storage areas and i'm not sure but I think that storage compactors can still work when they have e.g. sand, in front of them. If this is the case then that means that we can just fill in the entire space with lava once the compactors are placed and then solidify the lava in front of the compactors and mine out a grid like pattern allowing the dupes to access all of the compactors without any ladders and with the entire space filled entirely with compactors.

didn't know how to solidify lava so I just used debug mode to just place some Abyssalite instead of solidifying the lava and then removing the tiles I don't need, this would probably also work with water but you would need to keep the area cold so the ice doesn't melt. It works though, the compactors are still usable when having a tile in front of them.

Nah, I feed it all to the hatches.

that still wouldn't work, they don't eat quick enough
