Is *good* performance in DST w/ Caves turned on possible?

Recommended Posts

Basically: see the title.

DST runs just fine if I turn caves off. I have no issues at all. I can fight beefalo & koalefants with a 7-hit kite, i can fight pigmen with a 5-hit kite, i can fight tallbirds & werepigs with a 3-hit kite, i can fight krampus with a 1-hit kite, while never getting hit even once.

If i start a new world with caves enables, it's a crap shoot. Definitely can't fight krampus without getting hit. Usually can kill tallbards with a 2-hit kite but even then still occasionally get hit. Can do a 6 hit kite against beefalo & koalefant but still get hit once in a while.

Why should turning on caves cause such a significant impact on the performance of this game? I know that it is technically hosting the server in the background, and I am a client connecting to my own server, but still this amount of lag is insane. I don't experience this amount of lag in any other game i play even connecting to other servers over the internet, let alone my own server running on my own machine that i am currently using to play on it.

I looked over the troubleshooting guide on the support site, but it wasn't really of any use. I can turn off Lag Compensation but that doesn't actually fix the lag. it only changes what I see.

It recommends a ping of 150 or below. There's no way I have more than 150 ping to myself.

I'm not playing over Wi-Fi.

I only have really basic stuff running in the background.

There's no one else playing on my network.

I've tried disabling all mods, that had zero affect.

I've tried disabling my firewall, zero affect.

I don't have viruses, spyware, adware, or malware on my computer. I did a factor reset on my computer, installed windows updates, installed my drivers, installed chrome, installed steam, installed DST, rebooted the computer, and tested it out, same results.

I configured my router to work with steam.

I exceed all system requirements:

  • OS: Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8 / Linux Ubuntu 12.10 or higher - I'm using Windows 10 Pro
  • Processor: 1.7+ GHz or better - I have a core i7 4790 4.0 GHz
  • Memory: 1+ gigs of RAM - I have 16 gigs
  • Graphics: Radeon HD5450 or better; dedicated 256 MB or higher - I have a GeForce GTX 970

Is there any way to make this game run smoothly with caves enabled?

Well, I couldn't imagine it's your PC; your pc specs are literally double mine (I have 2.1ghz processor, eh gfx, and 6gb memory) but I can host caves servers perfectly fine.

Maybe your internet connection is barely enough to host one server, so adding a second one (caves) overtaxes it? Since, as you said, you're a client connecting to your own server. I dunno what else it could be.

It sounds like lag compensation's fault to me. Just turn it off.

Also how much ping do you have? (press "backspace" in game, and you are able to see it in the bottom right corner.)

Turning off lag compensation makes it feel even worse. There's a noticable delay between everything thing i do that's not there if i don't turn caves on. Is this just a fact of life playing with caves that everyone except me has just gotten used to or does this problem just literally not exist for some people?

Ping jumps between 0 and 1

I can host caves on my own solo worlds just fine (although if I'm playing solo I would be playing regular DS in the first place), and my internet speed is below average. Perhaps it's simply your internet that can't handle it.

Only solution I can provide that solves the problem is to just play the original game, but you lose out on a few things (ANR content, Winona, etc.), and you won't be able to have friends join you.

I never play DS any more. DST just has way more stuff to do in it. But it's laggy. I wish they would just port all the new DST stuff into DS.

Either your net is just not powerful enough or it's the best the game can handle.

Personaly I got used to it and don't notice it anymore, I just go for one hit less while kiting or straight out tank if I struggle to avoid one hit. Good thing there's marble armor, eh?

i dont think is the net, i play with less than 1mb and i have 0 lag on Caves/Surface

When you have caves enabled the game makes a seperate server your client connects to AFAIK, so it's gonna have some delay as you're pretty much hosting 2 games at the same time. My advice is to turn action prediction, or, lag compensation off, it's absolutely worth the "sluggish" feel you get because you can actually play the game lol. Trust me when I say you get used to it in the first 4 minutes of playing. Your choice though, quoting a fellow player: "prediction is a matter of taste though. some prefer to have the game look smooth but be hit by everything without even seeing it!"
