DST is an amazing game but forcing team play to reach objectives?

Recommended Posts

I thought I read that the new update will require a team for some objectives, correct me if I'm wrong.   I'd rather play with a team as multiplayer makes the game so much more interesting but getting one together has always been difficult unless you know people in real life who are DST players.   If the Klei developers are going to require team efforts can they do something to make it more attractive to assemble teams?   Maybe incentives, heightened exposure (everyone likes to see their name in lights), etc.?

On another subject, wouldn't it be profitable for Klei to begin running their own servers for hire in the long run?   There are companies out there but it is a nightmare to do such simple things as restarting a world with all the mods desired (took me 4 hours).   One of the issues preventing more game play is the ever present problem of lag which can be mitigated by well connected servers, I rented one and even players 5,000 miles away never experienced lag.

Where did it say that a team is required for something? If this is for the Forge event...that sucks, because I have only like 1 friend which sucks at pvp..wait, I suck at pvp too! *worlds tiniest violin plays in the background*

...but it's not pvp event, and we don't know all details

I think the solution is "events" in the arena, when are time limited and not part of the core game. Maybe it will be possible for them to be scaled depending on how many players enter the arena? At any rate, it seems like a good way to satisfy players who want more big fights without forcing those of us who don't have teams or just aren't into combat. It's a drag that it's so hard for one or two players to get mushlamps or the bee crown, for example.

The forge might be a world setting.

Also it shouldn't be that hard for 6 players with all those cool attacks to defeat the enemies there.

boarrior can represent new enemy power level

It could be..for real I wish Klei was more straightforward with this because the Halloween & Christmas events were for a "limited time" but you can change your world to have them on or off...if this is the same deal then Klei is such a huge troll for always saying this stuff is limited time when in actuality it's just the skin unlocking & the loading screens which are the limited time things..

ps: And it's stupid to make a event bigger than the Chirstmas & Halloween events with all this cool stuff & then removing it all after a month, like they work to do all that stuff then get rid of it for a year? That would suck so much....I just want to keeping jump smashing things as Wolfgang, I'm sick & tired of the same old basic attacks we've had since the beginning of the game..

this event is different because of exclusive skins, like in other mmo games it needs to be time limited. Also i think it will be small static arena map with completely different gameplay, that's why it can't be part of normal world

Read below.  Yes, this is experimental and in a limited setting but it is the direction that Klei is taking.   Fuelweaver was a first step, notice how quickly they re-coded when it became apparent that a single player could defeat Fuelweaver (still possible but harder).    Don't get me wrong team play is what makes the game so interesting but how many of you have been able to assemble long term teams (that aren't made up of personal friends) on the internet?   I see dozens of servers out there with very few players, only the Klei ones seem to have consistent interest although those don't last and players are constantly rotating in/out.   I know many experienced players who like to play alone for various reasons, among them is to teach themselves how to beat bosses more effectively.   Also, everyone has a different concept of what a base should be and how to conduct yourself in the game (one player in my game objected to me cutting down to many trees even though I was replanting).   It would be nice if there was a way to have some autonomy while playing in a team setting.

  • 6-player co-op challenge, where the goal is to try and defeat the Grand Forge Boarrior in an arena. The only way to survive will be to work together.

Can't they just disable those skins like they did what the other events after the time's up?

Well, I'm sure they could do something special if the world is created with the Forge toggled on it always gives off that map, but yeah probably.

Wow, this is horrible :wilsondisappointed:!! How can Klei expect everyone to have 6 friends to do this?! The Methus puzzle was already hard enough needing someone else to help you, but depending on 5 other people?! Plus, since it says specifically that 6 players is required that basically confirms this mode will be completely removed after it's over which is super lame :wilsondisapproving:!!

Does this also mean if you don't have 5 friends you can't play the Forge!?!?!? NOooOOOOOOooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

klei can introduce new thing for the forge: MATCHMAKING

I hope, but if it's going to be limited time then removed completely I doubt they will put effort into doing something like matchmaking..especially since they mentioned so many times this is experimental test...

you forget that Forge is only FIRST event. klei will make more events, so matchmaking is not for one-time use

but that would mean all these events are combat-oriented (since matchmaking is only used for fighting games), which I doubt because they specifically mentioned that with these new events they want to "try out new things that could break the core game". If all the events are combat oriented I don't think would've used something like "new things" but more like "new combat mechanics", don't you think?

i think we will see in the future

Hopefully, I'm wrong, but if I wasn't this is a big step in a very dumb direction..

i think it's a good way to go. Replayable short sessions with cool gameplay and cool rewards make don't starve look like mmo game, not only sandbox survival game. it's a breath of fresh air for me and i want to see how it will work

If they're replayable & don't get removed then I think this is a good direction too :)

I hope we are going to be able to play The Forge at any time of the year by changing the settings when creating a world.

What I think is going to happend is that the characters need to fight all of the monsters and later one or more bosses and then maybe return to the DST world(or maybe there is a trailer, who knows). Maybe we need to find keys that opens different doors.

Maybe it's like chess but with multiple people, you need to wait for your turn before you can do anything?

I hope they are going to make it possible that you could be less than 6 players.

You literally read my mind, almost as if you copy pasted it :wilson_ecstatic:!

What's good about limited-time events if they happen at particular times of the day  is that it will be easier to find teammates. The way the game works now, there are some people I've played with before, but, like me, they play at various times when it's convenient to them. Limited time could mean that people have to make a point of playing at a particular time, which means there will be more teammates available because everyone will be online at once. I have no interest in this sort of thing, but I can see why some people who like raid bosses might prefer it.

Similarly, if this limited in that it only lasts for a period of weeks, then Klei can always come back to do something different, maybe change the monster you have to fight or (I hope) offer some other kind of challenge, like adventure mode, that is not so combat oriented. If people don't like it, no problem, something new will come along in a couple of months and Klei can change things as they learn more about what people want from this feature.

If it will be matchmaking mode, it's logical to make it time-limited, because 2+ active events will increase waiting tme drastically
