  1. 1. Best icon for machines turned off at a switch?

    • empty battery
      0
    • disabled

Just a little thing that irks me.

it would be easier to read your system status at a glance if the icon used for machines that are currently switched off by a regulator switch between them and the power source was the "disabled" one, rather than the "empty battery" one.

Sure, it makes logical sense to use the no power icon, because there is no power, but in practice... because the player has chosen to unpower it with a switch, on a gameplay level it makes more sense to me for the icon to be the same as the other things that are disabled by choice.

It should be a unique icon as there are reasons you might also choose to manually disable the device. Really i just wish they would count things behind switches on the potential consumers list. cant tell how many watts are on a circuit without counting if you have any switches..

Hmmm I'd probably like something like this:

Left to right: not connected to wire (as now), underpowered (connected to producer, but not enough energy production), disconnected (not connected to producer).

Although if you put a switch before a transformer, things behind the transformer would get the underpowered icon anyway since the transformer is a producer for them. The transformer could drop the disconnected icon, though.

Agreed on this.  I mean, you can tell, it just takes some extra effort.  And it doesn't really serve any purpose imho, to not count those things behind the switch against the circuit they're on.

Yeah, an additional icon that looks like the disabled icon would be even better.

On transformers, I honestly think the whole system as it stands is quite broken. A circuit breaker would be a better option, (ie switches off when over 1kW and a dupe has to go reset it) or a transistor as I've seen requested in a few threads here, which would let you build your own circuit breakers, load balancers, backup systems and all sorts of other good things.

That's unfortunately not very possible in general case. Consider a player may do this:

The two battery banks are separated circuits and joining them would overload them. The wheels are there just to help charging one of circuits that needs it at the moment but the player will take care to never have both switches on.

The entire point is that it would overload them. For instance if you have 2 liquid pumps each behind a liquid pressure switch and a gas pump/thermo reg behind a thermo switch on the same circuit, and you're looking for a line to add another gas pump,  that line is reading at 0/0 with no consumers if those switches are  off.

They could very easily list those devices in the list and just make them red or add (disabled) or (gated)

I like Kasuha's proposal for an icon.

I also agree the power system needs to be balanced better. 1kw would be a good low level wire but better materials should increase this limit, especially materials like gold which is a known conductor. If they used transformers correctly you would be able to push more current down thinner wire with higher voltage as well.
