Geyser Control Methods

Recommended Posts

What are some of your methods for controlling geysers? Any structures that you guys use every playthrough? Im desperate for that infinite water but I'm scared to touch that thing haha. I'm looking for something that is contained, fairly self running and most importantly safe for my dupes.

Encase it and pump the water where you'd like.

Pump it into electrolyzers, or cool it in a tank.

If you're planning to try to cool the water, most conventional way is to run non insulated pipes behind your water tank filled with cooled hydrogen, how you cool it is up to you (i'd recommend wheezeworts, but some use thermo regulators)

Good luck :)

I just surround the geyser 2 thick with Insulated Tiles with a 1 column of Gas Permeable tiles coming out of the top to collect the steam and 1 column of Solid/Gas Permeable tiles at the bottom for water to drain and collect. All I do is let nature take its course and don't mess with it.

This was my most recent playthrough. The wheezeworts maintain temps of -50C in the bottom chamber, which keeps the batteries nice and cool. It's not enough to cool the water from the geyser because the cooler water is being used too quickly, but it drains off enough heat to stop the top chamber from filling up with steam that never cools.

I need help too because I have found a geyser in a slime zone and it's too coles to my base for me to stay calm (bottom left): ogawd.png

But the thing is, I don't think I have the resources or right buildings to control it yet because, as you can see, I'm still pretty early on in the game (this pic is a bit outdated, but I'm still on cycle 14 right now).

Easiest thing to do is to stop spreading towards it and leave layer of stone as thick as possible between it and your base. When you research insulated tiles, build a wall between it and your base using insulated tiles. That should keep you safe for a while.

My only problem with that geyser is that it's right in the middle of the biggest slime zone I have ever seen. So if I want to get slime for my distillers or farm pufts, I need to go there.

I'm still good on water so I can avoid going that way for now, but the problem remains.

Research insulated tiles, build an insulated wall around it and the slime is yours.

I don't know if you noticed but I'm on cycle 14, Insulation is far from where I am now in my research schedule.

Also, I just realized that if I want to use that geyser I'm gonna need gold. And where do you get gold? In the slime zone!

That means I'm going to have to go into the slime zone anyway, be it for the slime or for the gold.

EDIT: after reading the posts above, I don't know whether it's better to try and cool the water the geyser emits or just use it for electrolyzers so I can get rid of algae terrariums. Tbh I'm more keen on the electrolyzers because that would give me oxygen for dupes and crops and hydrogen for the generators and eventually for setting up a cooling system for the geyser's water.

Could I run the cooled hydrogen pipe through the geyser,  oxygen liquidiser, and my batteries/coal generators? Or should I use as different system for the oxygen purifier and the geyser/power. Just wondering if thermal switches could be used to keep it all together. I dunno it sounds like a rather big plan so I might just work on it in my spare time. I'll post what I learn but I havent been able to figure out thermal switches yet bc I don't know how to access debug mode.

The best way to transfer temperature between gas and liquid is using a water pump made of wolframite half submerged in liquide.

With this I can say 6 wheeze warts in a hydrogen chamber can't fully counter a geysers heat generation (~0.3C increase per cycle).

Did you copy/paste this same post in two threads :D

Again, wheezeworts are great at cooling gasses, not great at cooling water (they're not meant to be) but it does work, you just cant do it at full flow rate.
