Some tips please.

Recommended Posts

Hello people..

I havn't played Don't Starve in 3 years now. And that is really a mistake, its a great game. But I don't seem to be able to come any further than when I left the game. Where my longest survived days were 124. The game seems to have alot of new elements and items in the game, that I cannot figure out how to get to. I need help. :)

just play game! u will get more fun during finding solutions by yourself

I can't imagine what we could teach you that you don't know if you managed to get to 124.

Play more cautiously, or at least, play more cautiously when you don't have any revival mechanisms, and you'll be able to get farther than that, you're way past the point where general advice is going to help.

Hmmm...

I have to assume it was Don't Starve singleplayer you got to Day 124 on, since as far as I know, not even the earliest closed beta of Together was out by then.  Heck, was even Reign of Giants out then?! If it actually has been three years or around then...HOO boy, have you got a lot of new stuff to find!  I don't blame you if you find it overwhelming, _I_ certainly would.  And right now we're in a very busy period in development, as Klei is releasing parts of the "New Reign" beta every two weeks so the game keeps getting even _more_ stuff!

I would say one really _basic_, overall thing you need to know is:  Don't Starve Together has the Reign of Giants content in it by default.  That means there are FOUR SEASONS now.  Not only two--"summer", and winter, but all four.  Reign of Giants summer is SUMMMMMERRRR compared to vanilla Don't Starve.  Ever wondered why, when the thermometer goes way _down_ you experience a bad effect (freezing), but when it's all the way _up_ at the top your character doesn't act like it's hot at all?  Well THAT question went away!  : P

Also:  umbrellas.  You'll thank me later.  (Don't Starve vanilla's summer is still around--it basically became Reign of Giants' fall; this is where the temperature will be mostly normal and pleasant and the old music plays.  Each season has their own lighting, fall is the one that looks like original Don't Starve.)

Surviving over 100 days in vanilla does NOT necessarily mean you'll last that long in Reign of Giants--it not only added a lot of new content but a lot of _difficulty_ to the game.  Many new players of it (including me) were thrown for a LOOP when they encountered stuff like structures being able to catch fire, full moon effects, the new overheating and wetness mechanics...and way more. (Also you can no longer keep food fresh forever by leaving it on the crockpot.  Sorry.)  Fire can and will happen and it's way more destructive now.  In Together, however, there's smouldering--things take a LOT longer to catch on fire.  So that helps.

In addition to all the fancy new stuff being added by "A New Reign" (a lot of which I myself don't know how to use/make/deal with and how necessary vs. optional it is) such as the broken marble statues, pets, camp decorations, gates (!!) etc. there's also much older stuff you won't know, such as deserts and birch forests (both of which are awesome :)).  Oh, and each season has its own giant now.  HAVE FUN!

(Okay, okay, _fine_, for you pedantics out there, the Dragonfly stays at one location in the desert and is kind of a raid boss--but in _singleplayer_ Don't Starve (with RoG) she is indeed the summer giant and will fly up into your face in that season.  Happy?)

There's also a lot of new mechanics unique to Don't Starve Together only, such as world regrowth, disease, resource variations, the fact that rocks can be replenished on the surface now, and that you can continue to gather stuff even when your cursor "hand" is full.  And yes, caves! The ruins are on the same level, though.  They're in the middle, the regular cave stuff is at the outskirts.  Many people have been reporting lag issues when adding caves to their server; I'll leave that up to you and your computer.

And last but not least, some of the characters have been tweaked for Together and work differently.  Some only a bit, some WAY different (coughWillowandWoodiecough).  You might find some surprises on even the character you used to main...

Thank you for your time. What game would you recommend Together or Vanilla? I have all the DLC's for vanilla, for some reason. And I got together free, for some reason also.. So I have it all. I have played a little bit, but I get to the point of the advanced science machine and I just stop. I dont know what to do beyond making the advanced science machine and building my base. The thing about leaving food on crockpots was what kept me alive so thats a bummer. I main my man Wolfgang, back when he was just stronger, not when he was stronger on a full belly.

Vanilla is more relaxed, Together includes people, doesn't have SW, some recipes are different, mobs tend to have more health, and it has multiplayer-exclusive content. Pray tell, have you explored the caves in DS?

I have not, I did not even know there was caves.

Then you've got much to do. Wolfgang will really need much sanity management there, but DS has two levels of the underground, the caves and the ruins (DST has them share the same level on a separate shard), with a lot to do. So perhaps you'd want to try them out first?

Sounds like fun to be honest, my favorite aspect back when I used to play was the exploration.

Being able to play together with someone experienced might also be fun, to get me into the ropes.

It sure is! Remember to prebuild all structures you'll want and get a good supply of honey, jerky, a bird as well as basic resources on hand. Do you want some tips on spelunking here or start a new topic?

Aww, thanks, Marcus!  It was no problem, as I kinda love it when I actually know enough about something to be helpful.  : P

Another thing about Don't Starve Together vs. singleplayer is that in normal Don't Starve, you can choose whether to turn on the expansion content(s) or not.  You feel vanilla today you can do that, you feel like Reign of Giants or eventually connecting it to a Shipwrecked world, you can do that.

In Together, the RoG content is kind of just always there by default.  Sure, you can do stuff with world-gen options such as turning off spring and summer, all the giants except deerclops, etc. but it'll still have the new biomes, characters and overheating/wetness mechanics.  And the new stuff that happens at full moon...you might as well just leave the seasons and giants how they are, at that rate.

So basically one advantage singleplayer has over Together is that it's more _flexible_.  Also, you don't play with other people..which can be both good and bad.

If you've never even explored the caves at all yet, whoah man!  You're in for a _lot_ of new stuff. And death.  Lotsa new deaths. ;)  I myself kinda suck at the caves and don't do them very often, so you'll have to look to others (including Arlesienne here) for advice on that.

And if you want to play with helpful other people, you can always try my server!  I'm not on all that often but I'm always willing to help, newbies and oldschool veterans alike.  :)  (It's called "Zelynda's Funtime Wilderness Extravaganza!" and has mods, but they're...moderate mods.  Mainly stuff like turning Willow back to her old self and making it so thermal stones don't break (yes, they have durability in Together, I don't know why either).  For ease of searching, you can just type "Zelynda".)

Have fun dying exploring!  It's one of my favourite things to do, too.  In the Civilization games, I am _obsessed_ with "getting the black off the map".  This tromping through absolutely everything...doesn't always go down well with the other Civs...

There actually is a preset removing all RoG content. It's called No Giants Here. Hope it help ;).

Oho, what?!  Dude, I never saw that.  I guess it's because I haven't really played with the presets.  I assumed it was still normal, normal +, and lights out.  Okay then, ignore some of what I just said.

Singleplayer is still the only place you can go sailing (and get blown away by a hurricane), though.  ;)

I love tinkering with the map to make it really crazy, so I'm all game to help if I can :)

Alright.

Let's start with the basics. This thread nicely showcases you CAN live in the caves for long periods of time; it's for DST, mostly, but it's fine since it's going to be easier in DS:

http://dont-starve-game.wikia.com/wiki/Guides/Spelunking_Guide

I will keep updating this post, alright? I don't want to lose anything.

And since I have various servers within my little group, if you tackle DST at some point, consider yourself invited :). Write on my wall and I'll lead you in there.

No need :D.

1. First, downstairs, it's constantly night, so your sanity is constantly drained. That's why you need ways to restore it:

- food like jerky and taffy, waffles or ice cream

- sleeping (not available to Wicker)

- clothes (having a tophat and a houndvest has nullified my issues whatsoever)

- prototyping items

- killing shadows

2. What to take downstairs?

A) Prebuilt:

- crockpot

- alchemy engine

- drying rack (you will want as many as possible of these)

- tent

- birdcage

- fridge

- pighut

- PREFERABLY a beebox (for honey downstairs, you need to put it under a sinkhole light, then surround with flowers, which require butterflies to be planted around, and preferably put it a few screens' away from the camp - preferably, because I went on living fully in the caves for a full year if I recall correctly, with @MeingroessterFan, @Fortie@Silvercide, @PandoMish and @PiturcaClaudiuStef, for the funsies, and our beeboxes landed too close to the camp, YET kept producing honey)

B) Carried in your inventory:

- a live bird

- as much long-lasting food as possible, topmost jerky and honey

- stacks of grass, twigs, to a lesser extent (since you can get it from mushtrees) wood

- one stack of hound teeth and beefalo wool (no hounds or beefies downstairs)

- pinecones and other plantables, particularly once you've found a place to return to (the caves may have issues with grass shortages)

- magic research labs if you can - the shadow manipulator is better if you can make one since it unlocks both tier one and tier two magic recipes

- armour (earthquakes can be dodged based on the silhouettes of impending rocks, but if you don't manage, they sure hurt!)

3. Who will work best in DS caves (a suggestion)?

- Willow because of how she will have her sanity restored from fires (which you need in the darkness anyway), the lighter of unlimited durability

- Maxwell due to his massive sanity regen rate

- Wendy as Abigail will be at her best all the time

- WX as you will get more gears than you can chew in the ruins

- Webber can be good since he'll have lots of spider friends IF you can handle his small sanity pool

4. What food should you primarily use?

- Unagi in the ruins for healing (http://dontstarve.wikia.com/wiki/Unagi)

- jerky to restore sanity

- bacon and eggs for health and hunger (have a spider den within reasonable distance, cook monster meat, feed two to your bird for two eggs, add another for meatiness, and then a fish, a frog leg, an eel, anything meaty not being monster meat too)

5. Light sources?

A lantern will be best (refuel it with lightbulbs), whereas a miner's helmet (both requiring fuel in the form of lightbulbs or fireflies, or slurtle slime) will leave your hands free.

6. The nightmare cycle. Read more on the wikia. It means you will periodically have shadow creatures regardless of your sanity level.

7. Depth worms - instead of hound waves, you get these attacks. Can be kited.

8. Rock lobsters are your friends - feed them the cheapest minerals (since it's square to them whether you are giving them flint/rocks or gems, they eat for vast quantities, not quality) and have bodyguards.

9. Beware the bunnymen - since you will likely live off meat-based dishes, these fellows will attack on sight. If approaching them, you can't carry (or have recently carried) meat, fish or even eggs. Vegetarians can befriend them like pigs. Bunnymen kite, rockies tank.

10. In DST, you won't be able to take Chester, rockies or beefalos between world levels, but it is possible to do in DS. Similarly the unlimited thermal stone has durability in DST.

SURVIVAL IN CAVES IN DS IS EASIER THAN IN DST.

However, dying in good company is much more fun after you've got hold of spelunking.

Thank you very much. :)

I think you just need to look at the game as goal oriented and timed. I like to prepare by the four seasons.

  • When you spawn it's autumn, pretty much nothing can suddenly kill you except hounds and starvation. Don't Starve and Don't get eaten. Meanwhile, prepare for winter, spring then summer.
  • Winter: Keep warm, Don't Starve, have enough grass/twigs (these don't grow in winter), prepare for Giant.
  • Spring: Keep dry, Don't Starve
  • Summer: Keep cool, Don't Starve, stop your base from bursting into flames and prepare for giant.

Obviously there's more to surviving than this, a lot of the forumites gave many solutions but I find the best mindset is to think about what can kill you and how to stop it from killing you.
