Internet use in Don't starve Together

Recommended Posts

Lets say i want to use my phone's internet to play dst. And i have 4gb internet monthly. How much would the game consume for an hour of playing in a friends local server with lots of mods and caves i mean with everything it can get how much mbs or gbs would it consume for an hour of play ?

and what are the things that effect more internet use as server optionts and mods so i could tell my friend to lower them.?

I had 16 GB for 2 months and IDK, it lasted for about 2 weeks worth of DST for me... at about 6-8 hrs a day...

Lets say u only checked dst on that time period and lets say it was 6h a day so 16gb took 85h ? So 5-6h consume 1gb. Looks cool

thanks for the reply but i need some more to be sure about it.

I am sure there are plethora of programs that allow you to track internet usage of certain programs, and can provide aggregated data on your one particular gaming session.

Just now i used one of utility programs I use to clean my pc called Auslogics Task Manager - it just displays current internet usage of each program in Kbps format. Here are basic findings in 5 minutes I have tested this based on what you are doing in game the Kbps fluctuates:

standing/no motion/afk - 3 Kbps
Moving/exploring map - 8-12 Kbps
Loading from/into Caves - 20-100Kbps (or more, just note a big spike in data usage)

the values will be scaling also on these factors: how many entities that are moving on screen, fighing, big bases (probably will have significant spike).

Unfortunately I did not have time to test all of these but you get the general idea, very very rough estimate I would say in worst case scenario (living in big base, fighting spiders all the time, exploring caves and ruins, crampus farming, etc) should be no more that 20 Kbps on average???

Using those numbers say you play 30hrs/week

[ 20 Kb/s x 30 hr/week x 3600 s/hr x 4 week/mo] / [1024 x 1024] Kb/Gb = 8.2 Gb/mo

10kb/s average is around 4Gb/mo.

Again there should be better internet usage tracking software that actually gives you AVERAGE as you play, not just a current Kbps like one I did, try to look for those...

So you want to use your phone as a router? A normal phone or a smartphone? In the case of the latter, you will be wasting a lot of transfer through background apps. Which in most cases

are pesky little buggers you cannot uninstall without losing your warranty

, so it is something to bear in mind.
The type of connection is important too. What protocol will you use? Your game may lag a lot. More info is needed at any rate.
