Will Don't Starve Together Have any Paid DLCS?

Recommended Posts

This is a simple question but will they, for example if they added in shipwrecked would it cost money like on normal dont starve?

I think they shouldn't therefore it wont be harder to find servers cause some people would have the dlc and some people wouldn't.

Let me hear your thoughts on this.

Don't worry they won't make it so you have to own Shipwrecked to play in a Shipwrecked world, they added RoG into DST without people needing to own RoG, but they did give RoG owners a fire pit skin. ;)

First things first, my good folk. Through the Ages is on the radar now, isn't it? And this one is rumoured to simply be added to the game. Klei has a very clever business model. I doubt they will change it any time soon. I would pay for a good DLC of theirs, but I consider buying new copies of DST as presents for friends works better both for the company (which gets more customers) and for me (as I get more minions trusted players to play with).

I bought Shipwrecked in early access and didn't play it until it was fully released, so I won't mind getting another DLC for DST. I'd assume that the DLC would be as big as RoG or SW.

But tbh I doubt this would even be a thing. RoG and SW for singleplayer are probably giving enough profit for Klei. You could also count the fee from Steam market (not much of it but still).

I don't think so. Paid DLCS that add content don't really work well with the multiplayer model that DST has.

This only assumes the unworkable forms of DLC.

Workable forms include (but aren't limited to):

  • New characters.
  • New crafting recipes (as long as they're just playstyle variants, and not outright stronger; like a Warhammer that costs similar resources to a Spear, deals double damage, but attacks half as fast.  It'd basically be balanced with the Spear (it'd probably need slightly more than double damage to offset the slower attack animation actually) but it would feel different.)
  • New cosmetics (like the Crates + Keys idea from the other thread.)
  • New dynamic events or monster spawns that happen specifically to players who've bought that DLC, but which are balanced to be both an additional challenge as well as an additional reward (so that it balances out and these players aren't outright stronger they just get a more dynamic play experience.)

Seems kinda sad to throw our hands up and say "welp, we can't improve upon the game because nothing works for DLC" (and it's outright rude if the implication is "welp, I really love DST but I'm totally unwilling to give Klei any more money, nor should anyone else have that option.")

I know almost as much about you as you know about Klei.

Which makes me totally qualified to tell you that you probably earn enough profit from your job.  I've let your boss know they shouldn't worry about giving you any more pay increases.

(Or could we maybe agree that neither of us knows anything about the financial state of the thing we're talking about, and that this "well I just think you make enough money" attitude is really strange?)

As long as the main content isn't segregated from players who don't own the DLC, it wouldn't be an entirely faulty idea (if it was, however, we would probably see the 'Halo 3 Incident' repeat itself).

You know, side content that doesn't affect anyone else particularly, but is still worthwhile enough to warrant a purchase.

I wouldn't mind for paying for new DLC characters w/ new and interesting mechanics or adding a bunch of new items, seasonal or otherwise.

But in the past, Klei has typically added these things in for free w/ big updates.  The only paid DLC has been when they have added new and sweeping changes to the entire game world, like Reign of Giants' seasons or Shipwrecked's sea world and boats.

If RoG only added giants and items, and no seasons, it probably would have just been a free update to the game, imo.
