So I've been playing Don't Starve for a few days now and I really like it! Died a couple of times but managed to reach day 22 and still going; a very challenging game but very enjoyable. However I seem to be experiencing an issue with the speed of the game..

I didn't notice this until I saw walkthroughs made by some of the users in the forum, I noticed that their games were much faster: their character walked faster, the collection of items was faster, etc. and when I played my game again, I saw the difference and it just made me think why on earth mine is so slow!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why it could be running slower than it should be? (I bought it from the chrome store rather than steam) Thanks!

You probably have a low-end PC with a cheap GPU. That's the first thing that comes to mind. Perhaps you can share your system specs with us?

What are your system specs? And this should be in the Bugs section.

It's not a bug if his computer is causing the problem. If you have a problem with the game it doesn't instantly mean that it's a bug that's causing it.

it's probably a setting or fault on my laptop

That's... probably your problem. Laptops are often considerably weaker than their desktop counterparts, especially when it comes to the GPU.

In the event that your laptop has both a dedicated Nvidia/AMD GPU as well as a weaker Intel integrated GPU (I've seen plenty of laptops with this sort of setup), make sure that your system's power plan is set to "High performance" (you can find that setting by searching for Power Options from the Start menu), which will force your laptop to use its dedicated GPU, if it has one.

Also, take note that your laptop will drain its battery faster when it's in high performance mode, so switch it back to the recommended setting when you're not gaming to preserve your laptop's battery.

Yep its probably because you're playing it on a laptop. When I played it on my laptop it was at, I would say, an ok speed. Then I played it on my desktop and it was super fast and much more enjoyable. My 18 pig army killed a spider queen, nest placed in the middle of the pig village, so fast I didn't have time to gather the monster meat.

Please use this program. It will tell us your specs, just screenshot the page once it loads your hardware.

Once you post your specs, we may be able to recommend some programs or techniques to get your game to a decent speed. (PS your screenshot should look like this)

Why not use DxDiag? You don't even need to install software for that.

Hm, it's certainly not that bad. It should be able to run Don't Starve without much of a hiccup, but I can give a few suggestions:

1. Download a program called Advanced System Care. It's one of my favorite programs for cleaning out your computer gunk, and is the only program with a free version that I've actually purchased. It not only gets rid of **** you don't need, but also has a feature that boosts your CPU by turning off programs/features you don't need.

2. When launching the game, go into your Task Manager, click Processes, right click on DontStarve.exe, select Set Priority > High.

3. Make sure you close down other programs, ESPECIALLY browsers.

4. Right-click the game in your Steam Library, and select Properties. Uncheck Enable Steam Overlay.

I've done this to games that normally run like ass on my computer, but these steps can make it manageable. It basically forces your computer to put 100% of its power to only what is necessary and Don't Starve. If you're playing the Chrome version, I highly suggest you get the Steam version or .exe instead. They will run better.

On another note, your system seems to be running pretty hot. Make sure you're using your laptop on a flat surface so it can vent better.

thank you so much :) I'll give that program a go and I'll use one of my steam copies to see if it runs better (hopefully it will)

Yeah.. I've noticed my laptop getting really hot so I probably should put it on a better surface (by better, I just mean not my stomach)

Seriously, good luck with everything. If you have any more issues, you can send me a PM. I'm usually happy to offer whatever help I can.

it worked! :) now it runs much, much faster haha. In the end all I had to do was follow your advice about playing the game on steam; I didn't have to delete anything or increase the priority of the game while playing. Shame I had to start from scratch but it's worth it, it has a much better feel now.

Thanks again Silver and everyone who gave suggestions!
