K5dV
How do you typically play on large multiplayer servers? (14-30 people). I've seen a pretty good argument it is much better just to be a nomad and don't bother with other players. Although bases often have farms, crock pots, drying racks and more. Bases also seem somewhat safer, although that isn't always the case especially if somebody brings a treeguard or deerclops back to the base. The nomadic lifestyle also has it's own disadvantages, including limited inventory, and challenge of surviving typically without crock pots or drying racks. I'm curious on your opinion about nomadic vs base. My personal experience:So far, I've pretty much avoided sticking in bases for the long term. I usually play Webber and stick near spiders. If I'm a new spawn, I run to whatever base there is, learn essential science recipes and run to gather stuff for myself. Then, I end up going into the wilderness, but come back to the base every couple days to learn new science recipes, use the crock pots, dump some junk, or trade supplies with people at the base. CameoAppearance
I've never been on a server with more than nine people online at the same time. Maybe it's because I play Endless Mode almost exclusively, and Survival and Wilderness Mode seem significantly more popular. I prefer to have a base to come back to, because I like having somewhere to store excess stuff, make crockpot food, and rest in a tent. Even if I'm not trying to make bases they sort of form anyway at convenient spots I visit often. On a server that big I might want to make my own smaller base away from the main camp rather than spend most of my time at the main base, depending on how social I was feeling and whether I was worried about the Deerclops or griefers, but not having a base just seems impractical. TemporaryMan
I'd live as a nomad if there was a reliable source of butterflies to eat. Problem is, by the time there's enough players on a server for a few to organize a camp, there's three times as many plucking all the flowers the moment they get out the portal. Also once a camp gets organized all the berry bushes get dug up and relocated to it. Options for food get limited to monster meat, cacti, and when I'm lucky, bat wings. I'd live in a camp if there was a reliable source of food to eat and materials to build with. Problem is, by the time there's enough players on a server for a few to organize a camp, there's three times as many hovering around the crock pots stealing my food once it's done cooking. Also once a camp gets organized all the rocks get mined and relocated to it just to be wasted putting useless walls around it, and all the silk gets used making tents that people sleep in every night instead of learning to cook something better than meatballs. Options for food get limited to monster meat, cacti, and when I'm lucky, bat wings. SuperPsiPower
In PVP, I nomad and try to kill people so that some random can't find my base, steal stuff then run away. In PVP, It's either hunt or be hunted. In PvE, I make a base with friends in a section of the map so the casual Players or Griefers can't find it. :L Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/61451-how-do-you-typically-play-nomadic-vs-base/#findComment-702518 Share on other sites
Asparagus
Nomad/Hermit for me... make a small camp to store stuff, then travel... be the occasional travelling merchant that roams the map collecting stacks of every resource and giving some to the guy screaming in chat about not having any... O__O ...Provided I come to the server early game where resources are abundant... K5dV
I guess one of the main issues that repels people from bases is the lack of resources in the world be around day 15.On one server I played on I ran out of flint and froze to death in winter because I couldn't chop trees. And During winter bases rarely ever have wood. Hay walls seem like trash since it only takes one griefer to ruin them all. I guess stone ones help with hounds a bit, neither of them stop Giants though. absimiliard
All walls are a waste MiniKeeper. I suspect that is their point. (I would agree walls are pointless, barring some uses in herding) Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/61451-how-do-you-typically-play-nomadic-vs-base/#findComment-702651 Share on other sites
Codsworth
i'm more of the building kind, I usually work in my base until I die, Don't really explore unless I really need resources (for season clothing or rare resources for building). I love making that huge base, with all those wall making almost like and house and stuff, But I never really played an nomadic way. Mday
It mostly depends on who you are playing with. With good players its just a matter of how and where you build the base.Provided you have a good base location and base build, it is easier to keep players alive in the same base than having everyone living nomadic. (I would agree walls are pointless, barring some uses in herding)Exactly. Koalefant and beefalo pens are fine. Dragonfly forts are fine. Twinkie traps are fine. Using 60-80 rocks to pen the players in and impede expansions to the camp is not. Mildcream
I do a combination of the two things, I often make several small bases and cycle through them, depending on what i feel I need, while slowly expanding each of the bases. Asparagus
Walls are a great tool, both fashionable and functional: (That Koalefant has survived a long time and he was already there before all the teeth traps were placed... yeah, managing your base effectively can do that... not saying I'm good or anything... <__<) I mainly build a base where there are more than two entrances because then you may exit from either ways (and also to chase away any night hands that there may be... also, make road turfs, they help out a lot), plus during hound attacks, the hounds will go for the nearest entrance rather than try to break the walls making funnel traps effective against them all while being in the comfort of your own home. Willow in her little coastal manor And if you tell me that walls are useless against giants, well, yes they are (but they can slow them down a bit, a few hits then they're done), that's why it's a common practice to run away from the base when you all hear them coming... walls aren't the only things that will break if they smash stuff you know... O__O NOTE: I HAVE REALIZED I DON'T HAVE A SAMPLE PICTURE WHERE YOU USE FLINGOMATICS... And During winter bases rarely ever have wood. This is one reason why I play as Woodie so much on public DST servers. That, and the constant beard insulation, even though it's a small amount. It can still be really hard to find minerals though, unless you go down into the caves and wait for earthquakes. But then you have to deal with a lot of sanity drain and few ways to replenish it. (Also it only works on dedicated servers.) Also I just tried a large public Survival Mode server yesterday. (I was intending to run off into the wilderness and make my own base, but winter forced me to come back to the base near the spawn.) I got killed by an ewecus that I was unfortunate enough to find at the end of a set of tracks, someone stole my miner hat while I was dead, and the hosts yelled at me for "not trying hard enough to come back to life" -- no one anywhere near me had spider glands, except one person I went past as a ghost and then couldn't find again -- and then revived me with the console. I think I'll stick with Endless Mode.
