Issues with running out of flint?

Has anyone been having a hard time keeping up with flint in the game? I am fine on rocks and gold, but using so many tools to harvest a variety of things has spiked my flint usage (shovel is used significantly more, machete is used a lot and requires 3 flint AND doesn't last very long).

I feel like every few days I'm sailing to one of my discovered volcano biomes, but once I harvest all of those I will have to sail quite a ways away to find anything. I was hoping the lava rock would regenerate in the volcano biomes, but so far nothing has happened (I am on day 50).

I know in ROG there were "renewable" sources of flint, such as the caves or the mole rats. Am I missing something in Shipwrecked, or is it in fact a limited resource that may become impractical to find within a game year?

Flint does become a finite resource after awhile.

I think the machete needs to be re-tweaked.  It breaks down too quickly when vines and bamboo require 6 hacks, and the amount of bamboo required to maintain sandbags is enormous.  It does have the most damage of the tools though, so it can be used as a weapon equivalent of a spear.

Gold tools seem to be the way to go though.

LOL... I was JUST about to open a similar thread, as I am at day 247 and are running into the same kind of problem =/.
I guess, I will have to make gold tools, which I usually never did.
WIthout any kind of underground area, I hoped the volcano showers would bring minerals with them, but nope.

1) Trade with Yaarctopus for trawl net. Use trawl Net to get golden axe/shovel, spear, trident and gold.

2) Plant spider den and build pig house near your base.

Farm spider/snake/ for monster meat. Use those monster meat to farm werepigs. Use football helmet and ham bat as armor/weapon.

3) Trade with Yaarctopus for new cloth sail, repair old sail with sewing kit.

Usually I use 40~80 flint in my first year. After that I rarely have to use any.

I haven't even encountered the Yaarctopus yet.

Keep in mind that my map is from the very first release, still... maybe it is bugged, I don't know =/.

Capy really should just make the volcano rocks drop obsidian, gold, rocks and flint when they hit the ground.

Totally agreed there, maybe they will add it at one point o3o.

Yaarctopus isn't a must for this to work. It may not even worth while to trade with him if it isn't very close to your base. You can forget about it if you aren't anywhere near it.

Yaarctopus is in every world from first release. It is there. You just need to keep exploring.

Trawling, Slot machine, whales and buried treasure all occasionally give you tools, but they're definitely not enough to get by on if your world has already run out of flint. Best advice I can give is to treat flint as more precious from the start, use gold tools when possible since it is fairly renewable and try to use weapons other than the spear.

Once you find the Yaarctopus you can trade with him every day for a fresh cloth sail which drastically lowers the amount of bamboo you need to harvest/flint you need to use on machetes.

I'm up to about day 150 on my current world and I'd say I've only used about 10% of the flint that could be harvested from my world, if you're not planning on surviving to 1000+ you could definitely stretch your flint reserves out for a good length of time, just has to be something that's in your mind from the start.

1) I find that there are usually way more flint than gold available to begin with.

Typically my base have the following structures:

a) 3 ice box =3 gold nugget

b) 1 lighting rod = 4 gold nugget

c) 1 Alchemy Engine = 4 gold nugget

d) 1 Birdcage = 6 gold nugget

e) 1 Endothermic Fire Pit =4 gold nugget

f) 2 ice flingomatic =  8 gold nugget

g) 2 Ice maker 3000= 8 gold nugget

Also 1 gold nugget for each miner hat. In SW usually I will only have 1 miner hat.

That is 38 gold nuggets required by the minimum. I would have found 80+flints by the time I have found 38 gold nugget. Therefore I only use gold nuggets on tools when I have finish building my base.

2) If you really needed flint in specific, the slot machine does make flint renewable. How renewable? Depends on how renewable dubloon is in your situation.

3) You also get gold from using slot machine. However if you need gold nugget in specific(e.g to rebuild an ice box) then crafting 3 dubloon into 1 gold nugget is more efficient.

4) You can only use flint to make weapon (spear, unless you can craft cutlass supreme). Similarly there are things that must require gold to build. So, there is a balance in deciding how you wana produce tools.

Each axe produce 20 logs. That is 20 logs/ flint.

Each shovel produce 25 logs. That is 17.5 logs/ flint.

Each golden axe produce 80 logs. That is 40 logs/ golden nugget

Each golden shovel produce 100 logs. That is 50 logs/ golden nugget.

Hence, use flint axe and golden shovel to maximize output.

5) Each Machete has 100 use, that is 5.55 bamboo/ flint.

Each golden machete has 400 use, that is 33.33 bamboo/ gold nugget.

Either way, bamboo production is expensive. Try repair old cloth sail instead of crafting new ones. Use sand bag wisely.

6) I do trawl netting for whole dry season (20 nets each year). The resulting axe/spear/ pan flute and etc can last a long while.

Edit: I do think the key to conserve flint is to use ham bat. Spear do wear out quickly when there is a ton of hounds/ spider/ snake to kill.

I haven't even encountered the Yaarctopus yet.

it took me a grand total of like 400 days to find the yaarctopus for the first time ;-;

Oh god, thank you <3.

I felt a little bit stupid for not being able to come by him yet D= ... and mind you I have probably found ALL the islands that are there... though it is easy for him to just hide in one teeny tiny pile of sea that you haven't sailed across directly and you won't find him.

When I heard Volcano season dropped flaming rocks from the sky, I was hoping too that they would drop resources like in DST. More than likely that will be implemented, seems to make sense. However, it's starting to seem like making use of the Yaarctopus for gold and making gold tools will be the best bet. Does he work just like the pig king? Can you give him meat to get gold nuggets?

He's much less efficient than the pig king. He accepts fish-type foods (crockpot foods get specific items in return, ingredients get single dubloons). He only gives out dubloons, in counts similar to the pig king giving out gold nuggets, so because you have to refine them it works out to much less. This is also compounded by the fact that you can only trade with him once a day, and chances are he's located pretty far from your base.

Sorry it took so long to reply, my account was new and I didn't know they had approved my topic yet XD These are some great tips! Honestly I haven't used gold tools much because sometimes I struggled in ROG to have enough gold for tools (on play throughs where I was not near a rock area or pig king) so I forget about them. With the dubloons, maybe it will be easier. I am still exploring though, so I can't use yaarctopus yet :'(
