InsanityPie
I would like to know why the devs thought making a move that only EA would be expected to make and instead of reasonably releasing multiplayer and solo in one game like it should of been, they not only sell both seperatly and expect players to pay double the price but even went as far as to lock the DST player out of a balanced solo option on a server with only them(and even blocked the ability to config certain features to a more balanced solo playthrough aka mob damage). Im getting some seriously bad greed vibes here no matter how I look at it. Ive heard EA use the code excuse too many times to justify screwing over players and making a quick buck to not even closely buy the devs claims of such an issue... it's not hard to work a multiplayer engine into a game, there plenty of former single player only games coded 80% more complex then this one and yet they managed to make it work just as good as their solos while those that acctually had a good code excuse such as totally different engines just released a multiplayer version and when a player bought one they get to download the other free of charge... I mean really, DST is the same price as DS and we players who have one are expected to buy the second to even use multiplayer/solo? Even though both should of been a single game to start with instead of the dev coding a slightly tweaked copy thats missing some features from the original and selling it for the same price? Not cool. Like I said, no matter how I try to look at it I can only see a group of developers that have sold enough copies to make MORE then enough money to be set for life(while people like me who have literally no money to their name sit on the side lines watching greedy developers like AAA slowly rack up the price for less like how DLC is used by EA for example) using AAA class greed to make a quick extra buck(most likely before DST was even being worked on to if the sell count is any indication). Can someone please explain this to me, or at least point out a good reason for me because right now I have absolutly zero respect and have a very low opinion of the devs and while I don't like thinking badly of others... I can't stand greed and the damage it causes to others, im the opposite of greedy and hate needless greed with a passion since it only harms but since thats exactly what this situation looks like I can't help it ;-; Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/59943-can-someone-please-awnser-this-for-me/ Share on other sites
Xavven
Alright, I'll bite, although it's generally considered poor class to rant on your first post (on any forum), and on top of that the thread has a click-baity title. Just a little advice to avoid getting flamed in the future, as I'm sure you're going to get an earful unless this thread gets locked before that. On the one hand, I'm trying to empathize with you. Yes, I have personally gotten annoyed at developers who go into an expansion frenzy and start offering $5 DLCs for a reskin and an item with better stats (what amounts to 10 man-hours of work for them), turning the game into Pay-to-Win garbage. It's hard to watch a favorite game take a turn in that direction. On the other hand, Klei hasn't really gotten to that point with Don't Starve and DST. The prices look to be very reasonable. DS + DST costs $30 total right now, and it will surely go on sale near Christmas. How many hours have you logged on the game so far? I'm at 300 total between the two. In comparison, I got only 21 hours of play out of Call of Duty: MW3, and that game was a AAA title at $50 when I bought it. DS and DST have been worth every penny to me (more actually). Things are worth different amounts of money to different people. We have a free market where you can choose to take a deal or leave it and keep your money. It is doubtful that your post will get you a free copy of the game or come anywhere close to changing Klei's business model, so you'll just have to decide whether the game they're offering is worth the $15 to you or not. Simple as that. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/59943-can-someone-please-awnser-this-for-me/#findComment-692034 Share on other sites
Flare2V
Shipwrecked is a full game for $5. Don't Starve is priced at pnly $15. Reign of Giants is an expansion that EASILY could've been $10. On top of all this, they constantly give away game keys for free and the games go on sale on steam all the time. You can pick up everything for damn near ~$20 this Christmas. Where is the corporate greed? Klei employees have to eat too, you know. CaptainFun
DST ended up being a Standalone app because when they started because:Multiplayer was a very divisive topic in the community. Many features needed to be changed for game balance.Straight up introducing network play into a game that wasn't designed to have it will cause problems. Early builds of DST were unstable and attempting to introduce netcode/engine changes would bring that instability to the main game, an especially unpopular idea with the anti-multiplayer crowd.Don't Starve Together is the same price as Don't Starve if you would try to purchase them separately but there a few things to keep in mind:You can bundle them and get RoG + Shipwrecked thrown in for 26 USD.Don't Starve Together was given to all Don't Starve owners for free if they had owned it in June of this year. They clearly want new owners to get both DS and DST together as evident by the way they bundle them. DST contains all of the RoG expansion content. Like I said, no matter how I try to look at it I can only see a group of developers that have sold enough copies to make MORE then enough money to be set for lifeMore than enough money to be set for life, huh? Do you have any idea how this works? Klei is a pretty small company, despite DS's popularity (the entire DST team being like, 14 people last I checked). Nobody is getting rich making indie games...except Notch. (while people like me who have literally no money to their name sit on the side lines watching greedy developers like AAA slowly rack up the price for less like how DLC is used by EA for example) Not sure if you're trying to get sympathy points or something but this is weird. If you literally have no money, you should not be concerned with the prices of videogames. Klei's games are frequently on sale, many of them like, 80% off last month. Maybe you should get it on a sale? MenaAthena
Well, from what I've heard, in the beginning the devs just wanted to focus on creating the best, lonely, single player experience they could. For the longest time even when suggested by some members of the community they shot down the idea of multiplayer as it would be hard to convert a game built solely for the purpose of single play to multiplayer and the idea wasn't the best received by a good chunk of the community. This changed though when a small group of developers presented the devs with a barely functioning demo for multiplayer, and they decided to give it a go. This is how I heard it went at lease; I could be wrong. Also, not only did they give out a ton of beta keys, anyone who had a beta key or a copy of the original single player copy of the game before the release into Early Access got a FREE copy of the game. That is a very very large amount of free copies that they could have just sold to us if they were really that greedy. The Letter W
It might be because single player was created years before multiplayer. Just a hunch. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Also, nobody is stopping you from playing alone in DST. It's just going to be a bit more challenging due to the rebalancing of things. Naipseht
I think everyone else has already logically demolished your argument of Klei's "corporate greed." One more thing. No one wants to read a solid wall of text. There's this new thing Wilson invented called "paragraphs." You should use them.
