Mandrakes?

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen that many people bring up the thought of Mandrakes being put in or asking why they're not put in, but... Why are Mandrakes still not in game? I mean, if we get panflutes from the Glommer statue, that must mean that it isn't the Panflute itself that is the problem, so why aren't Mandrakes in game yet? What's so hard to code for them? Have they just been forgotten along the way? Because seeing them back in the game is vital for getting more panflutes, and if they respawn then getting renewable Panflutes for that matter.

I still think they need to work out the kinks with the Pan Flute and Sleepy Time Stories, because both items are currently OP.  They both put your foe to sleep, and you can just whack him a bunch of times before he can retaliate.  If they try to run, just use it again, and with it's insanely large range, it's impossible to escape it.  Just rinse and repeat for infinite dead players.

That's for PvP that might be a problem. That doesn't happen for normal battles. Also, the very fact that Sleepy time stories and Pan flute are in the game for both PvP and PvE, it would make no sense for mandrakes to not bein the game.

Prehaps then, they're planning something different for Mandrakes? Some new mechanic of some sorts?

Well, Klei had to do some recoding to make the mandrakes work.

But they certainly wortk now.

I think the problem is "what do we want mandrakes for, in a multiplayer setting?".

In DS, you got up to 3 mandrakes and that's it, world hop for more.

Does Klei want 3 of an item for the many players that will explore one map?

Do we want players world hopping in the server for mandrakes?

Maybe they could make one set piece like the Goose nest, where mandrakes grow.

1 per season or 1 per 2 seasons. Or maybe you could boost their growth with something from the ruins.

Maybe mandrakes could grow on the caves now.

If you watch the Klei Dev cast you would know that mandrakes will be returning soon.  We asked and they said they're coming back.  Other items are just higher on the cue like caves and performance along with the just added reworked Woody.  These things take time people and they still have to rebalance THE WHOLE game for multiplayer knowing what they now know.  Just be patient, Klei hasn't let us down yet.

Mandrake a Spring season's special feature perhaps? That would be interesting!

Now that's a damn fine idea there!  Have their spawning be a seasonal thing.  I also liked the idea of them spawning in a specific area of the map as well.

Perhaps combining the two, by having them spawn only during spring rains near Glommer's statue, would work.  It's a fairly well-known area, and with the starting pan-flute there is already sort of affiliated with mandrakes anyway.

There's only one chester and glommer in multiplayer, and the deerclops drops one eye (allowing for only one eyebrella), so I'm not sure why having only a few mandrakes is an issue.

You can't eat chester's eyebone, or log out and keep it, or turn it into a limited use object.

Chester persists, Glommer persists, Deerclops likely comes every winter.

Mandrakes do not.

It doesn't matter that mandrakes don't persist or respawn because they aren't nearly as important as the three things I listed.

They are clearly designed and intended as a limited consumable resource. Not sure why that should change in multiplayer. If anything, you can treat them as a set piece: first person to find them gets the benefit.

They were designed and intended as a limited consumable for the single player experience.

You always got them and you always decided what to do with them.

It's not that it should change for multiplayer. But it's something to ponder about, since DST is another kind of experience.

I would personally like to join a server on day 666 and be able to find a mandrake, if it meant to go to the ruins and defeat the ancient guardian to get mandrake seeds. I always find myself going to scavenge bases or farm tumbleweeds for gears, since all the clockwork set pieces I find are already empty, so I imagine a similar but more difficult alternative would be nice.
