Tips on Not Being Dependent?

Recommended Posts

So a while ago I was on one of Clwnbaby's Twitch Plays DST severs and needless to say it didn't go well. I couldn't go 4 days without dying (Actually died after logging on due to a mishap involving permanent night) and when I was alive I was completely dependent on others for survival. It's happened on a lot of other, vanilla servers, too.
I'm not sure whether it was entirely avoidable, but I want it to stop.

First off, tools. This one is a bit more of an issue for me, since I tend to play as Wigfrid and not being able to make campfires when I want is a bit aggravating. Is there any way for noob players to get flint late-game that I don't know about? Because that would help me in every scenario that doesn't involve loss of life or death.

Other than that there's just ressurection and health. The second is just self-explanatory mid-battle health management (having to back out of half the fights was a bit embarrassing as Wigfrid), but the first is a bit more complex and off-topic. Here are my questions:

-Do the pre-floodgate "haunt things to keep your stats from draining" thing still apply? Or was that even a thing to begin with?

-What's the protocol for dying on Survival servers? Are you expected to log off or are people obligated to res you?

-Is there any way to ressurect yourself own your own?

And those are much all the questions I have. If you can answer any of my questions or you watched the stream and noticed other things I was doing wrong, please tell me.

Also, Bil-Dan-Whatever, Clwnbaby & Damsel in Distress; Sorry again for screwing you guys over.

Nope?

1st one: Debatable; if no other means of reviving you are present, and you do not wish to be a burden, you can. But it isn't fair or any fun.

2nd one: Maybe; it is entirely up to your "friends".

Haunt Touch Stones (also Meat Effigies and Life Giving Amulets... if there are any lying around)

Flint is a bit tricky to get when there is none to begin with. They litter the rocky biome and starting area, but are hard to find outside those two places. Your team might just have to share until some rocky biome mining gets done, but they aren't required to.

The stat drain for ghosts was changed awhile back. You now lose max health if you revive through the tell tale heart, but a meat effigy well not give you a penalty. The expensive booster shot can restore your max health.

If you die on a survival server, you should talk it over with your team. Different people will want you to do different things.

Touchstone, Red Amulet, and console commands are the only other ways that could revive you.

If you are playing as Wigfrid, I recommend getting used to dealing with spiders. You get a lot of work done by spider slaying, and the spider glands you collect can be used to revive people later. Wigfrid is great if you exploit her fighting mechanics, just never try to tank. Only Chester and Wolfgang should tank damage.

The ghost health meter is still in the files, but no. This still doesn't apply.

People should res you. So they wouldn't lose sanity as fast.

-Is there any way to ressurect yourself own your own?

If someone activated a touch stone, a life giving amulet on the ground, or a meat effigy.

As for being less dependent, skill is a huge thing in gaming (no sh*t) so you have to use your skill to survive.

I say YES! the others are obligated to res you.  Otherwise stick around and wait and let them suffer the penalty, its the point of the survival servers.  Too many survival servers I've been on where someone dies and EVERYONE asks the ghosts to leave because their sanity is draining.  BUT in the same respect dont be a burden.  Don't go around haunting anything and everything burning and destroying whatever you can.

But there is a small exception to this rule.  If you die multiple times and it becomes apparent you just cant make it on the server then yes you should leave.  After awhile reviving the same person EVERY day or every other day becomes very annoying and taxing.  Not to mention your own health max suffers to the point where unless you're just dying accidentally, you are too far in the hole to recover that health or be able to survive much longer.

But all in all first death for sure it is up to the others or touchstones to revive you.  Stick around and ignore the Please leave ghost comments.  If it becomes apparent no one is going to rev you under any circumstances take off cause thats just boring for you.

Now this all really depends on the players. If its dead of winter, you join and die, don't know where to go to get ressed. I really feel like you should log off but in most cases the players should revive dead ghosts.

easy way to learn the game is to watch a couple basic youtube videos and play single player.

learn to survive through one of the easy seasons on your own.

as for being a ghost if you die once or twice its ok. Most people have enough health and sanity to revive you but when you die every other day then you should probably play on another mode until you get better.

Do the learning world. It's where you host your own private server by yourself and set the world settings to something very easy. (E.G No night, no winter, food every 2 feet, etcetc) And play on that until you feel ready to move up, then make a slightly harder world (Maybe add a short night etc) Do this until you can survive on default settings.

Is there any way for noob players to get flint late-game that I don't know about?

Nope. Not at all other than blind luck.

Other than that there's just ressurection and health

See step one. Eventually you will learn every enemies attack pattern and you will learn to dodge attacks. Simple as that.

Or was that even a thing to begin with?

Nope?

Play this by ear. It really depends on how set up the players are, if you die right off the start no one will be able to res you because they don't have the resources and they don't want to throw away health and sanity like that. Other times people will just yell at you until you leave. NEVER be one of those guys that just sits there haunting/burning things.

To make the most of your Ghost time I recommend haunting flowers to turn them into Evil Flowers. They aren't useful right away but late game you'll be glad you can farm them.

I'm not really a noob in that respect, I know how to kite and locate/crockpot food and stuff like that. That was more centered around surviving on Twitch plays/heavily griefed servers. Thanks though.

...

Noted.

@KidneyBeanBoy, Well for Twitch Plays step one is to avoid the streamer like the plague! Many of the effects that Twitch can use are either focused on the Streamer or the area around them. A few effects are global of course so the best thing to do there is try to prepare for everything! I also recommend playing Wickerbottom as her access to science machine level tech from the start is invaluable when the world around you is rapidly changing. It also means that all you need is a cheep science machine to unlock all science based tech.

Here are some things you should try to get done as quickly as possible.

  • Get rabbit earmuffs
  • Get a lot of nitre and grass
  • Work on getting a Beefalo Hat
  • Work on getting an Umbrella and/or Ice Cube
  • Live nomadically

As for a heavily griefed server... there isn't much you can do but find a new server. A player is the most powerful creature in the DS world, they can screw over the entire world by destroying mission critical resources.
