SPOILER: Which of these items to bring to Final Chapter (and tips?)

Recommended Posts

This post is one big spoiler, so...

I'm about to finish Chapter 4 (mine is King of Winter) on vanilla DS and wanted to ask you guys/gals what to bring to the Darkness chapter. It's my first time reaching this far in Adventure Mode. This file is a couple of weeks in the making. (I've been playing on and off a few hours every couple of days so I don't get tired/bored and make stupid mistakes. Haha)

Right now, I'm planning on bringing

  1. Tam o shanter
  2. Walking cane
  3. Miner's hat
  4. ???

I'm posting a screenshot of my current items, in case you think I should make/bring something else aside from what I had in mind. My questions are:

  • Suggestions for 4th slot? Silk? Gold? Flint? Twigs?
  • Is TOS any good if I'm going to be wearing Miner's hat a lot anyway? Should I just replace this with a food item?
  • Should I make a stack of jerky for the 4th slot? My problem is the drying time takes longer during Winter (Does it? I don't remember where I got this idea. Does someone know if it takes longer in winter?) I can't make a lot of racks since I'm low on grass. The savannah biome is closed by obelisks and I trapped a Deerclops behind it. I suck at kiting and combat. I would much rather not go back. This means I only have 2 drying racks and waiting for all the meat to dry might make the current ones spoil and be useless anyway for final chapter.

Structures:

  • firepit
  • campfire
  • science machine
  • alchemy engine
  • a crockpot for meatballs in case I only get MM and mushrooms in the final chapter

I don't mind spoilers so any additional tips would be very much appreciated. I'm so stressed/scared right now. I feel like that nervousness before a huge exam. @____@ If you have jokes or stories about final chapter too, they're all most welcome.

Thanks!

Tam is kind of useless because you'll have your miner's helmet on most of the time. Here's what I suggest:

1. walking cane

2. miner's helmet

3. stack of fireflies

4. stack of blue/green mushrooms

Ideally you'd have a stack of jerky, but who's going to base-build in adventure mode? Also, the darkness chapter usually has loads of mushrooms that you can dig up whereas it has relatively little food in my experience, so you can substitute the mushrooms for food if you have a shovel prototyped. I usually zip right through the darkness chapter though so I opt for shrooms if I have them.

@Arcita, thanks for the tip! I don't have a stack of shrooms though. I already used what little I had trying to get past the troll obelisks...

ha! Looks like the troll obelisks have found a new victim. If I had to select what to take based on what you currently have, I'd probably take the cane, the miner's helmet, the meat, and a bug net to catch fireflies with. First order of business after you get the basics (flint, sticks, grass, wood) should be to gather up mushrooms and fireflies.

walking cane

Similar to the Tam, bringing a walcing cane doesn't make sense, because almost constantly hold the divining rod.

@applebottom

Lemme remember, OK, I had the luck for chapter 4 to be archipelago, so I built lots of drying racks, a stack of grass, a stack of silk and a miner hat. The jerky for sanity, health and hunger, the silk and grass to make bug nets for fireflies and because they're useful in general, and the miner hat for the light of course.

But well, you don't have enough grass for that...

Similar to the Tam, bringing a walcing cane doesn't make sense, because almost constantly hold the divining rod.

It's not necessary to perpetually have the divining rod equipped. What is more efficient is to quick-switch between the cane and the rod periodically so that you travel faster and you get instant feedback from the rod when you need it. It's similar to how inexperienced players will have a dark sword equipped for the entirety of a battle instead of only quick-switching it in when you're actually attacking so that you reduce the total amount of sanity lost.

Personally, I feel this is the best setup for going into the final chapter. I won the game for the first time with this setup.

100% Miner's Hat: A good source of portable light that doesn't take up your hands.

100% Marble Suit: Very handy if you find yourself in a sticky situation. This saved my life many times.

~40 Silk: Craft bug nets, which will let you catch more fireflies. If your sanity drops too low, you can craft a top hat, dapper vest or tent. And if starvation becomes an issue, you can craft fishing rods.

20 Jerky: Food is very difficult to find in the final chapter. You will definitely eat all of this by the time you finish the chapter.

Also, notice how I had a 100% Tam O' Shanter and walking cane, but I didn't bring those along. You will never end up using those because you will be constantly using your miner's hat and divining rod. I know how to rod pump, but I decided rapidly switching between my lighter and divining rod would be a better investment.

I brought a Miners hat, a walking cane, stack of jerky, and a stack of gold. Be sure to keep on top of making new miner helmets, and you should be good. The Darkness chapter was one of the easiest in my opinion. Just make sure you have light all the time, and you're golden! You got this!

You do know that you can refuel the miner's helmets with fireflies, right?

Refueling a depleted Miner Hat takes about 3-4 fireflies to refuel while as making one again only uses 1...

It doesn't make sense to me why you'd care about preserving fireflies in an adventure mode world. A bug net's worth of fireflies usually has me set for the duration of the run. I guess it works if you prefer gathering up a bunch of grass and gold rather than fireflies. It's interesting to hear about other people's strats. That never would have occurred to me to keep remaking miner's helmets.

Well, not everyone can get a stack of 40 fireflies to take with them to before they go to the next world... sure, if you've got 40, then why not... but if you can only gather about 10 or so, then conserving is optimal...

I don't tend to grind for materials myself. I usually just gather up fireflies to refuel as I need them. Especially in the darkness chapter, fireflies are very abundant and easy to locate; if I wanted to I could easily gather up several stacks just by casually collecting them whenever I happened upon them in the darkness chapter, but like I said, a bug net's worth is about 40 minutes of light, and is easily sufficient for me to complete adventure mode. I can imagine beginner's might try to reveal their whole maps, stop frequently and set up crockpots and build bases, not have walking canes, etc, so they may require a large amount of time. Even then it still doesn't make sense since fireflies are so abundant... but like I said, it's your way of playing the game and that's totally cool. I was just kind of scratching my head at that strat. That's all. :)

Thanks for everyone's replies!

I ended up taking

- walking cane

- miner's hat

- 4 jerky

- 3 meaty stew

Why? Failed scouting. I didn't check completely around the wooden thing and failed to see the 3 McTusks beside it. I left my extra items in the camp with Chester too so he could at least "live" in that world. (I'm stupid, I know.) Anyway, I panicked and just put whatever in the 3rd/4th slot.

I'm now on Day 13 on Darkness, going crazy and hungry, trying to find the last piece in the pig's backyard. (Though I already found the wooden thing.)

I thought I wouldn't care so much if I died since playing DST has gotten me used to restarting alot. But damn I'm too attached to this playthrough now... I'm scared to open that file tonight and play and die.

Now that I've experienced Darkness and also based on my playstyle, I'd probably take a bugnet/fireflies. (It took me 3 days to find a spider in Chapter 5 and catch more fireflies.) And maybe a stack of jerky. But that all depends on the 4th chapter. Wish I got Two Worlds instead of King of Winter. Oh well.... hindsight is 20/20. Also, what use is hindsight when you're in perpetual night? T____T

Posting a separate reply because... YAAAAAAAAAAASSSS I did it!!! Thank gods for war freak merms who will aggro on anything and distracted the chess pieces. There was a hairy moment when I thought I'd get locked out between the obelisks. Shrooms saved me. The tip about digging them up saved me. I would've starved to death earlier than that if not for the forums because I hate "destroying" a world and would think digging shrooms is EVIL.

Thanks to everyone's tips. And in the other topics in this forum too. OMG I'm so happy!

I feel like going back and saving Wilson though....

Dude that's awesome. Congrats! Adventure mode is tough to get through on your first try, so you did really well.

Oh God, sorry, I posted that in a rush because I was going somewhere...

What I actually mean is that sometimes (especially when you're new to this), fireflies are kinda hard to come by especially when you don't know how to min-max... I personally just refuel it too but since we were on the subject of why we bring a lot of gold and fireflies, I replied with that...

Anyway, I just usually bring:

  • A walking cane
  • A miner hat
  • some long lasting food (be it honey or jerky)
  • and a weapon/some fireflies/actually just any other thing will do
