How to set stuff on fire??

Hold a torch over what you want to burn. I don't mean while you have it equipped, I mean click the torch and hold it over the object you want to burn with your mouse.

You can create a torch and light trees on fire. I never tried to see if that works for spider nests.

Or you can build campfire (not firepit) right next to the trees, and feed it with a rope or board.

Left click a torch in your inventory then left click a tree.

The easiest way to get rid of spider dens without using a campfire is to plant a tree next to it and light it on fire. The fire will spread almost immediately.
