Really, it seems like there's very little point in fishing currently, for me. The time spent waiting to catch a fish, out of the already blindingly short time a DS day takes, makes recipes such as fish tacos or fishsticks, rather pointless to catch.

What i'd like is a mod to make it so that you're not throwing the entire day away just to get enough fish to make a crockpot meal out of. Either make it so that they nom on the hook a lot faster, or make more fish drop, or something along those lines.

More drop? no ...It's a bit cheaty.

But make the hook a lot faster? why not just faster,a lot it's too much, and it's fish ! I like the way they are in the game but yourmod will help a lot of players who think it's very long since they have only one pond and doesn't want to waste their time for just 1 fish per 2 min XD . Good idea !

What about making a whole bunch of fish variants that buff you in different ways?  That would at least spice things up a little.

Well, if someone wants to make custom arts for it, that's fine, but maybe something smaller would do, otherwise.

Sorry, I didn't see that. It would be cool if it will drop sth like old boots xD

I actually agree, fishing is pretty dull as it stands. The issue is making the loot show up on the fishing rod and not crash the game.

I'll look into this more later, but for now I'm not going to mess with it much.

Well, I meant variants, really.  Just bigger ponds and such, although it would be awesome if someone could make it possible to fish in the ocean.  Technically (this is a bit of a longshot) if you did something with the fishing rod to make it more like the pitchfork, then you MIGHT be able to draw up some glitch-y code.  Anyway, just ideas.

It's possible. Although, it doesn't seem like something I'd want to do. I'd much rather do something like fish traps which you can set in the ocean which occasionally yield fish and other loot. That also wouldn't force the modder to do something unpleasant like making oceans fishable.

From what perspective? The art side, or the mechanics side?

The mechanics. Right now the actual fishing mechanic is a bit hardcoded. I could probably rig it up to give you stuff alongside the fish, or add custom items with custom animations, but all that is a bit much, at least right now.

I quite like the idea of fish traps, though, which would give you either fish or loot. You could even drop them in the ocean.

It's not a simple issue to address. :p

Fish traps sound good as in "you can leave those and when you come back there might be fish in it" similar to bird traps and small traps. Also instead of buffing the drops i'd say fish sticks should get a little bit of tweaking. Fishsticks are usually frozen so why not up their perish time by a lot. Let's say they spoil in 40 days now instead of 10.

Imo the currently best recipe is bacon and eggs as they last 20 days and they give you 75 hunger. So fish sticks give you 37,5 hunger and last 10 days which is a little bit underpowered (bacon+eggs are so easy to farm) so combined with fish traps i guess i would switch to farming fishsticks instead of bacon and eggs.

Also adding the possibilty of catching frogs would be nice too and maybe eels (but eels are usually only found underground so i am not sure about that) along with gravedigger items. Then we would also need a negative thing to catch so why not add the possibility to catch rot, petals, twigs.

I could see a balanced table of this:

40% fish

20% frog

1% gem

1% gravedigger items

8% rot

10% petals

10% twigs

8% nothing

The evil part of catching frogs by fishing is that it won't just be instant frog legs. The actual frog will leap out and glom your face.

Or what about adding a 2 % chance to catch a new mob, the frog king, and if you catch him, 5 frogs jump out of the pond and attack you, along with the king. Killing the king gives 4 gold nuggets and 1 frog legs.
