I need some serious tips and help about *something*

Recommended Posts

Okay. I am a horrible player at DS, I love the game but I can't even survive my first winter, this is not from freezing but other things. Huh? Oh yeah. Back on topic. I have been wanting to unlock Maxwell for SOO long, and I can't get through the "Adventure Mode"... I don't really understand it (what do I do to get past the stages? Do I use the "things" that spawn? :|) ANYTHING will help a lot. Don't think I'm a complete newbie at DS though. I know much about it. I just don't play a ton.

If you only want to get through adventure mode just to unlock maxwell, if you don't mind a bit of cheating, (assuming you are not using the PS4 version) use console commands and type this in:

GetPlayer().profile:UnlockCharacter("waxwell")

Make sure you type in this afterwards or it doesnt work:

GetPlayer().profile:Save()

Save and quit, then look and maxwell should be unlocked.

If you don't know how to open the console, or it won't work, read some of this page: http://dont-starve-game.wikia.com/wiki/Console/Commands

If you dont want to cheat, there are a lot of good tips on here. But i dont have good tips right now :(

Do you have Reign of Giants, if so i might be able to help you with winter.

Also listen to this, this is correct.

You enter the door to adventure and use the divining rod to find all the "things" in each chapter, after all the things are found the divining rod will lead you to the teleporto base, where you put all the things in it. Once its activated it takes you to the next chapter, rinse and repeat

Ugh. Sadly, I'm a complete cheater freak out. I grudge on myself for possibly getting something "unlegit" so this would make me most likely want to delete DS and re download just for cheating XD

I seriously need tips on this though. I want to unlock Maxwell *SSSOOOOOOOOOOO BBAAAHHHDDDLLYYYYYYYYY* :|

If you don't want to cheat you'll have to go through adventure mode, which isn't quite easy, if ou don't mind a few spoilers you could check the wiki.

Most chapters have limited resources or weather conditions to pressure you. You should try to clear them as fast as possible until you find a good place to settle down a bit. Make sure to enough your starting area completely so you won't have to come back looking for the last thing.

Some tips:

-eat butterfly wings to gain health (ctrl-f to force attack)

-avoid taking damage without wearing any kind of armor

-on some chapters you should just explore the coast with divining rod equipped, only leaving the border to collect things

-prebuilt structures will carry on to the next chapter (build but don't place)

-if you are blocked by obelisks you have to get your sanity high or low enough to pass

Hi!  I'm also an anti-cheater; I still haven't unlocked Maxwell, but I want to earn him the normal way too.  I have played some Adventure mode, and it's tough (still haven't finished). It's also easy to get screwed by random generation.

I recommend playing it non-DLC since there are several changes that made some levels harder.

Are you okay with reading spoilers on the wiki?  There are descriptions of each level on it that should be helpful (I read them before doing adventure mode).

Another suggestion - it might be worth it to practice more in survival until you can comfortably survive a winter.  I don't know what your causes of death are, but since several of the levels take place in winter, getting used to the freezing mechanic, knowing your hunger and food availability in winter, etc. would be helpful just in terms of basic skills so you're not struggling with those on top of the larger challenges of the mode.

For example, you should know how to fight MacTusk & Co.  since you'll probably run into them in Adventure mode.  It sucks to get killed by a blowdart you weren't expecting.  You also will need to deal with clockworks and guardian pigs - having strategies for them would be useful.

Trust me, adventure mode is not fun at ALL and is very hard IF you only want to get to the end for maxwell.

If you have Reign of Giants, adventure mode will be impossible for you since some of the levels are in summer. And there is a level that STARTS YOU IN WINTER.

Lol I'm extremely used to freezing. What do you mean by having to deal with clockworks and guardian pigs? IF they are just enemies, Half of the time I just walk or run right by them .-.

You have to walk through a large-ish area of guardian pigs sometimes that are hostile.

Clockworks are right next to the wooden thing which you need to put all the parts on, so you DO need to deal with those since they attack you while you are doing it unless you are very sneaky.

What is a good character to play as when going in adventure mode?

WX is good because you can top off their stats with all the gears you encounter, I've heard wickerbottoms good for it too because you have a lot of things available to you immediately.

Wilsons good if you can get a full beard before you get the king of winter chapter, and if you have a good way to manage your sanity Woodie is a beast.

Willow's also good because of her way to gain sanity from fire

everyone has their pros and cons, Id just say go with who you're most comfortable playing as.

If I may ask, what tends to kill you before you get through winter?

Being an idiot and not making a fire before night, then respawning to my touchstone and freezing, tallbirds, on occasion spiders, rain (occasion), insanity (occasion)...

Ah, okay, the usual suspects then. :)

One thing I've found to be a lifesaver is to keep a fire built but unplaced.  I try to keep both a campfire and a firepit in the "hidden inventory" so I can place a "warming up station" in a good place (firepit) and have something to light in emergencies (campfire).

You need more food than normal in the winter, because sleep is the main way to avoid sanity loss due to those long winter nights. Sleeping causes you to wake up hungry though.

Key tips:

- base near a savanna, lots of grass is needed for bedrolls and traps for rabbits

- trap rabbits, four to six rabbit traps out at all times, sometimes eight or nine (meatballs = 2 rabbits + 1 monster meat + 1 berry/veg is a common winter meal to stretch out the low berry/veg growth)

- must have a crock pot and fire pit

- must have a heat stone at a minimum for travel away from base

- feed a pig monster meat and spend a day cutting wood together. You get wood you need and regain tons of sanity standing right near the pig as he chops. You must stand right next to the pig.

- rabbit traps can kill spiders (only need twigs and grass to make them) Put a few traps down, then run the chasing spiders back into them.

The key is scale. You can't just build one trap and sit proud. You need 5 to 10 traps. Then you need 20-30 grass at all times for torches and bedrolls, and are always refilling twigs and wood too.

I know some of this (Spider trapping, rabbit hunt, meatballs, etc.) Oh yeah. I also forgot to make a thermal stone XD

I disagree - i never sleep

A cooked green cap or too or some dried jerky is good for restoring sanity.

In terms of Adventure Mode completion, never take a risk you can avoid. As stated before, always prebuild fires so placement in a rough spot is easier, always have a min of one high duration torch easy to reach in your inventory at all times and when being chased by anything, running is usually the best bet--running is essential in a swamp as well.

In a level, always have a good stock of grass, twigs, rocks, and logs wherever you go and always try to have a food item--even if it's monster meat--HP depletion from starvation is an effective death sentence.

Don't be afraid to build fires soon after another when freezing is involved--always keep an eye on HP.

When attempting to build the teleporto when clockworks are in the way, always try to kite away in a herd of beefalo or spiders--don't take them head on if you aren't prepared.

Oh, and get a walking cane when possible--best friend, ever.

I just made this huge, because I think this is extremely important.

Always aim for your top priorities, and don't try to sidetrack. Knowing how to survive is the biggest key to beat adventure mode. Knowledge is literally embedded in the success of playing this game.

The wiki will help you tremendously, if not said before.
