Should I buy Don't Starve?

Recommended Posts

This looks very interesting and fun, but I've heard that it can get boring after a while. Also, is there a way i could try it? I heard the demo had been deleted.

every game gets bored after a while. buy it when it goes on steam/humblebundle sale. It happens relatively often.

It's truly a challenging and unique game with a lot of fun description comments.

If you don't mind losing all progress if you die and have no resurrection items left (called Roguelike games,) then would highly recommend buying it.

(Of course, you can unlock other characters by either dying or finding some Things to escape.

There's also a little Adventure in that Sandbox survival of a game if you find the right Door....)

(Jerry, just to let you know swearing isn't particularly "Allowed" here. And give me a shout if you want me to stop using your real name.)

yeah please don't use my real name

It's genuinely one of the best games I've ever played, it took me completely off guard on the PS4 store too. I'm primarily a console gamer, (my PC gaming amounts to old Infinity Engine games and that's about it lol) so stuff like this tends to slip under my radar. It was the same with Hotline Miami for a while but I managed to catch that on PC, albeit a bit late. Still bought it on PS3 anyway.

But yeah Don't Starve.. It's brutally hard, no doubt about it. It has a kinda roguelike system to it, in that when you die you lose all of your progress on that save. The only thing that carries over between saves is the characters you've unlocked. However the strange thing I find is that when you die and lose all of your progress, despite the fact that you've gained nothing tangible in the game, you still feel like you've made progress. Because you've learned, and the next time you play you'll be noticeably better for it.

For example the first few times you get tracked down by hounds, hell the first few dozen times, you'll be crapping yourself. But I'm at the stage now where I know how to deal with them, to the point where I'm actually glad when I hear them coming because they carry valuable crafting materials.

Or even really early on the first few times you try you'll probably just be running around picking stuff up, which is smart, but you'll likely have no idea what to do next. Eventually you'll get to a point where upon starting a new game you'll know exactly what you need to look for and what you need to do with what you find in order to survive. Now when I played I can easily have a substantial base set up with a berry bush farm by day ten, whereas not long ago at day ten I was still running around scavenging carrots and other scraps to stave off starvation.

TL;DR It's brilliant if you have the temperament for it, it requires a lot of patience and trial and error to master. I've probably put like a hundred hours into it now and I'm still learning.
