Ancient Guardian Origins?

I'm still believing the Guardian came before the Rook. Lke the hen/egg question.
It resembles a ''woollyrhinoceros [Coelodonta antiquitatis]''

At least a bit.

In my brain, Maxwell forced the Underground Civilization to build him his Clockwork army by using scematics he brought from the real world. Horses, Mantis and Rhinoceros. (Which he probably created in flesh first -> Guardian, but the flesh versions couldn't stand the world and died, exept a few Rhinos which became the Guardian) So he was forced to use mechanical beings, also because everything which is made of the fabric of the world, in the end belongs to Them but perhaps the mechanical stuff is human turf and they have no influence about it?

The Clockworks are following a dapper theme (chess) which symbolizes human, humanity, sanity Opposed to the insanity in this world.

Down there perhaps he started to use nightmare fuel which oozes from the debths of this realm . I'm still believing he planned revenge on Them for dragging him and Charlie in this world. And perhaps the clockworks were a part of this plan.

I think the Ancient Guardian was the Guardian for the civilization and protected them from the shadow creatures. But over time the Ancient Guardian was corrupted by the nightmare fuel (since the entire labyrinth is made out the weird nightmare turf). And without the Guardian the civilization was quickly bought down by them.

  • The Ancient Guardian was released in The Stuff of Nightmares update. Six Feet Under gave it the ability to do a close-range attack.

Its current form is apparently the product of Nightmare Fuel, as suggested by Maxwell's examination.

That the Ancient Guardian spawns in the "labyrinth" and is named "minotaur" in the console means that it is most likely a reference to the Greek mythological story of Theseus and the Minotaur.

The Ancient Guardian does the most amount of damage standing at 100 damage per hit (less if the player is wearing armour), and it has the fastest running speed out of every single mob in the game.

It takes only 2 hits with an Ice Staff to freeze an Ancient Guardian, making it the boss with the lowest amount of charges required to be frozen. This is probably an oversight by the developers as the Rook takes the same amount of hits to be frozen.

The Guardian is the only Boss Monster that doesn't have an Insanity Aura.

This thread wasn't exactly for gameplay info, just speculation.

Edit: Too lazy. Someone photoshop the 'Gentleman' Meme and we're good to go.

Since no one actually talented answered the request, I did it:

On topic. Maxy's exact quotes are: "My my, the fuel has changed you." and " I'm sorry I had to do that, old friend." (examining its horn). They support the idea that Ancient Guardian used to be Chester-like companion creature.

This seems like the best guess so far. Nice Maxwell drawing btw.
