FlyingCactus
I've no idea what to do, where to go, what to build. It looks fun, is immersive, and has a Tim Burton look about it. But thing is there's no tutorial and intro to teach new players like me what to do in the game. I would appreciate guidiance or perhaps someone pointing me in the right direction to get info. Thanks Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/30690-so-i-just-started-yesterday/ Share on other sites

Thanks Welcome to the DS forums Flying Cactus!(Crap, does that mean I gotta wear armor IRL to shield myself from flying needles too? ) There is no tutorial because it's supposed to be a "you against the world" survival thing...and not starving of course. And if you didn't realize it (yet,) when you die, you stay dead, also known as "premadeath."There ARE a few things in the world you can either craft or discover (one of them can even immediately be found without any crafting or tools that looks like a "spooky circle" and that's all I'll say about it to not ruin the discovery,) that will keep you alive when used (and consumed of course.) But if you absolutely positively get stuck, just post your questions, and we'll help nudge you along. I'lm deliberately holding off on pointing you to "sites that will spoil the discovery," but if you really need that, we can also refer you to such. Again, welcome and Good Luck.... and Don't Starve Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/30690-so-i-just-started-yesterday/#findComment-397017 Share on other sites
imsomony
Welcome, this is a great game, with awesome forum members willing to help! There are some experienced members who have tutorials out-and-about, as well as a Wiki... but honestly, half the fun is discovering things. Hold off a bit on those and discover a few things on your own first. There's a real sense of achievement that comes from mastering a survival game that I won't deny you of =) I will, however, give you mini-tips to get you going: When you're ready, the first thing you should build is a Science Machine, which will unlock further crafting. The next thing you should build is an Alchemy Engine ( it's a step up from Science). This is a survival game, not only exploration and building. You need to eat or you will die. You also need to keep your health and sanity up.You have day/night cycles, and seasons such as spring, summer, etc. You will always need a source of light at night. You will not need to cool yourself in summer, but you will need to keep warm in winter. When you die, it's perma-death unless you locate or craft revival items. As time goes on, you will need to build a base camp, where you keep resources available to help you survive.Do not be afraid when you find a bone with a blinking eye on it. It's your friend. You should begin your first few days by gathering food items (like berries, seeds, carrots) and basic resources, and exploring your map. "Basic" resources are grass, twigs, flint, rock, and logs. These will get you through the first few days at least by allowing you to make fires and weapons, and assist with crafting. After you gain resources and explore, you can decide on a decent area of the map to build your camp. Different players will have different advice on the "best" place depending on their strategies, so it's definitely up to you... however, every last one of us will be happy to tell you - don't build in a swamp!!! FlyingCactus
Thanks so much for the info guys! It's pretty cool that I can try out new stuff. Basically what is recommended is resource scavaging and exploration for the first few days? I learned the hard way not to attack the various creatures around, and to walk and do stuff. Any more tips that I should know that will not spoil the game? the truthseeker
Thanks so much for the info guys! It's pretty cool that I can try out new stuff. Basically what is recommended is resource scavaging and exploration for the first few days? I learned the hard way not to attack the various creatures around, and to walk and do stuff. Any more tips that I should know that will not spoil the game?Well, now you know not to fight until crafting armor and a weapon. [Like Yakov Smirnov] In Don't Starve land, creature eat you! But yes, resource scavenging and exploration are KEY to survival in your new games. Your basic immediately found resources aside, your first big goal is to find gold (rocks) to build the crafting (Science and Alchemy) machines. The Science Machine is first, then comes (basic) refined material, which is used to build the "even more Science-y" Alchemy Engine. Fires are important, as are torches for exploration. Building a fire pit however allows you to control what you will burn besides just logs and when the fire is lit (and you don't lose it completely and have to rebuild it over and over again.) Once you have the start of a crafting machine and fire pit, you can start trying to build a "survival camp." At this point, every "suggested way" goes off into their own opinion, and (again,) it's best for you to explore what works and what doesn't for you. But even if you die (or, this mythical rumor of "escaping to another place,") you gain experience to unlock other characters that have their own magnificent strengths and weaknesses (but only Wilson has the awesome beard! You'll see what I mean come day 22!) 23rd
Well.. WELL.. crockpot recipes are still a pain in the ass if you don't use the wiki. With craftables you at least see "oh, now that I've built this giant floating thing that clearly wants to consume my soul I can see that I need to use this and this and that and this to make a terrible light that will burn through my supply of nightmare fuel without giving me anything worthwhile in return.. on the surface." With crockpots recipes, though, you just have to throw in what makes sense in your head and hope it all works out. I'd imagine this could be quite infuriating when you get butter for the first time and throw it in with some frog legs, a handful of berries and a bundle of sticks only to get a steaming cold pile of goop. I think people are justified in using this. Neosaurus
I recommend not using the wiki for anything apart from crock pot recipes, no matter how tempting. I guarantee it will ruin the experience.
