Personal Map Markers

Recommended Posts

While exploring the worlds of Don't Starve i kept on finding things that i wanted to remember but there was a map marker. Things like beefalos, spots that i thought were good places to set up camp and i couldnt even put down a single marker.

Now the way in my mind it would work would be you place down a marker then you get to enter a name for that marker and voila you have a map marker

You can make Signs that will show on the map, bu they won't differentiate from each other. So the only way to remember which is which is to place traps, or chests or other structures and items that show on the map, and have a mental record of the resource or mob you placed them near.

That's a start but i like to explore the world till i find a really good spot to set up base and in the process i find a lot of different things and i need to identify them.

also i think they need to have lines or something to join wormholes so i can remember which goes where

For some reason people around here have a really bad attitude towards posting on old threads ("Necroing"), among other topics...

Fun fact: I've read through the Community Standards Policy and Etiquette thread twice (link below), and nowhere in it did I read any policy against posting on old threads. Also, this thread isn't even a month old.

Now that we're off-topic, I'd say that the reason they didn't do what you suggest, @porps, is because it was easier not to, but justified it by calling it a challenge, which it is to some. Overall, I don't think it's necessary. As far as signs go, I think at one point they wanted to try to get them into game in a more fleshed out fashion but gave up/decided it wasn't what they wanted to do.

As a matter of fact, they even wanted to make a "message in a bottle system" where you'd write a message and cast it out to sea and other players would find the message (as close as they ever would consider getting to multiplayer).

As for necroing, some rules can be assumed and/or are subjective. In this case, it's acceptable in my opinion. However, if someone bumps a year old thread just to say "cool," it irritates me (as much as a post on a forum could, anyway), and it's not like locking necro'ed threads is some new fad. It's been around forever and is actually a very common rule.

it would be nice if wormholes show their destination once you'd travelled through it, my memory is terrible  but i guess these are the challenges we must face

This is actually a great idea!

this thread was on the first page. What harm does it do you if someone responds to an old thread? If it bothers you that much you should probably try getting out more.

Aww, but you just had to be insufferable, killing any chance of people overlooking what I'd been considering a legitimate necro. That's a shame.

Sorry for contributing to the necro, but I'd like to cover a few things.

Necroing isn't an official forum rule I believe, but one of those things that people don't like. It's like being a jerk, it's not against the law but no one likes a jerk. I personally think necroing isn't that big of a deal, if the thread you want to post in is a few centimeters down on you monitor it's no problem moving your eyes and hand a few centimeters. Or, you could just follow a thread.

On topic: I guess I should be more specific about signs now, you can number code them on the map. Whilst you can't write on them (Which I personally think should be possible with some papyrus, silk and charcoal) you could put 2 signs next to a wormhole and put 2 signs where you come out, and for another wormhole you put 1 sign on each end, so you know "Wormhole 1 goes to the beefalo fields," and "Wormhole 2 goes to the Mactusk camp."

I hope I helped.

aye thats what i do when i remember (which isnt often)

I've just seen so many people screaming "Necro" lately (probably due to new players joining the forums) that it was starting to bother me and I had to say something. It is actually not a generally accepted rule, or considered to be "jerkish" to post on old threads, in my opinion. I have been a member of MANY a forum over my years on the internet and as a gamer and all forums are different. Some forums prefer members research pre-exisiting threads about a topic, some forums encourage posting on old threads and some do not.

I like JBeetle's take on it. I agree, posting something on an old thread such as "Cool" is really counter productive and pointless. However, there are lots of isntances where someone may still have questions/concerns raised in an old thread topic, so why make a new thread for it?

Of course, there is a rule about derailing thread topics...

There's a certain appeal in having to remember landmarks (perhaps in combination with your signs) to locate certain places, don't you think? You sort of gain a fondness for your map by familiarising yourself with its unique characteristics. On my current save I've memorised the location of some "special carrots" by using a mermen house with a three-tree boundary, making a mental note that two of the trees when lined up draw a line to the "special carrot" cluster :)

I'd definitely say pointless wormholes are the most memorable. Take the pair closest to my main base - they exist either side of a small landmass corner, and don't actually save you any walking time; in fact taking the wormhole is longer due to the brief loading times.

Thank you, random map generator. ;)
