My Theory on Don't Starve

Recommended Posts

So, I've given this some thought, and I've come up with a theory for why Maxwell has brought some of these particular people here. He's trying to find specific "flavors" of suffering that *they* would enjoy more than him.

Wilson's failure at his trade, similar to Maxwell's. Perhaps Maxwell was trying to swap his position with someone identical; Maxwell's downfall was trying to control the shadow's tome that was too powerful for him; Wilson's was attempting to use the scientific machine that he didn't understand.

Willow's out-of-control obsession with fire.

Wolfgang's life/livelihood is a lie (his changing strength has been called part of his "secret backstory").

Wendy's mournful depression, from losing the closest person in the world to her at such a young age.

WX-78's violent hatred of all things living.

Wickerbottom's intolerance? It's that or her loneliness or something. She's old and dying and lashing out and stuff.

Woodie's ostracizing curse.

Wes's forced silence; he's trapped in the confines of his own mind.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work out so well for him, but you can't blame him for trying, eh?

This theory, if correct, presents some ideas for new characters based on other such problems: jealousy, oppression, lovesickness, fear (Winnie, anyone?), and inferiority, to name a few. Maybe I'll drum up some suggestions for these. Unfortunately, this theory doesn't answer many questions; it doesn't answer how Maxwell found/knows all of these people, or what their backstories are.

So, what do you think? Do you agree or disagree, and to which parts?

EDIT: Here's the character thread in question:

I think the whole thing revolves around entertainment.

"Them" possibly took revenge on Maxwell and Charlie (Even though she probably had no idea what Maxwell was doing) for how they used Them as entertainment for his old magic shows. Maxwell would pick shadow creatures out of their world for entertainment purposes, and then he was forced to do the same with humans from his world. Maxwell was basically a puppeteer, he manipulates people (puppets) to entertain Them while they watch.

Kevin said she would be vegetarian, shhe was supposed to be pure by not eating any meat, if you watch Bunnymen quotes you see how they call meat eaters "unpure", so Winnie is purity.

Misaki's logic at it's finest

I thought it was an idea they played with over a year ago? The game is immensely different since then.

EDIT: It could also be spun so that she's afraid of killing, too cowardly to 'wrong' an animal, to scared to lose her innocence, or accept reality.

I still hope Webber would be kindness, like he would've been the reject from his family because he was too good, and too scaredy, like when spider queen eated his pet Rabbit, and then he attacked spider queen but he was too weak, and he was impaled by one of her limbs and then thrown away, and then Maxwell comes to near death body of Webber, and offer him revenge, so Maxwell then turned him into human like creature, Webber with his only desire to kill spider queen rushed at her, but was too scared, he had no equipment, so he decided to stay on island and prepare up for the showdown, he still retained his personality, and killing every innocent animal, and brethren (except spider queen and her spiderlings) would result in sanity drain, also eating meat would, and after eating meat he would say something like: "Oh my god, what have I become!?".................................... fine, I'll end, doesn't look like anyone is interested in Webber, I haven't found ONE who likes concept of Webber as a character ;_;

Also, can somebody explain me what this theory was initially?

Is this about characters being some sort of seven main anti-sins, or something?

See, I don't think purity/kindness are correct, because all the things listed are negative. The thought was that the shadows that trap Maxwell seem to feed on misery/insanity, and he's trying to find some form of suffering that they'll like more than his. He hoped that if he could find someone to replace him, he could escape. Unfortunately, he couldn't.

EDIT: For Webber, it could work for him. He could be rejection/moral conflict. He wants to be good, but no one likes him because of it. It tears him apart inside.

yikes, i'm kind of in love with that theory.

i kind of feel like it could be a combination of this and OP's theory--maxwell doesn't have a choice but to force people into the puppet-for-entertainment role for Them, but he DOES have a choice WHO he uses for that purpose, so he keeps trying to dangle somebody more entertaining than They find him in front of Them.  unfortunately, he isn't aware that they have absolutely no intention to replace him.  (hope being a good way to drive someone insane, and all...seems totally likely that They would have told him to just keep finding more people until They found somebody they like, even if it was a lie.)

Yes, absolutely this! You said it better than I did!
