the truthseeker
Wendy picked up the dying lantern, the light suddenly growing brighter and illuminating the pile of bones that lay at the end. Since Wendy doesn't use a lighter and there was no sister reference, I think 23rd needs to fix that to WIllow. 23rd
Since Wendy doesn't use a lighterRight.. about that.. 23rd's Zombie BonanzaChapter 4: The Bereaved Firestarter It was the longest night of her life, when Wendy wasn't running away from the groans and lumbering figures in the shadows she was trying to figure out what direction the portal home was in complete and total darkness. Not a lot of fun. Eventually she saw a faint light in the distance, the smell of smoke and burning wood arriving seconds later. A burning tree. Willow. Wendy realized how cold she suddenly felt, and against her better judgement started getting closer to the fire. Willow was behind the tree bursting into flame, as Wendy'd expected. Willow was also as much of a corpse as everything else she'd run into, something Wendy'd also expected. But.. Willow wasn't attacking her, just staring at the fire in front of her. The way it sizzled and burned.. every time an ember leaped from the tree towards the grass below, Willow smiled and let out a groan that Wendy could swear was supposed to be a cheer. Even as a zombie you couldn't take away Willow's love of fire.. Wendy took this moment to breathe, realizing just how existed her frantic dashing about had made her. That feeling of safety came over her again, seeing Willow casually lighting fires and ignoring everything else around her to watch them burn. Wendy took this brief reprieve to cook what carrots she had over the tree's roaring flames, catch her breath and figure out what direction she'd be heading next. She could handle this, she'd get back home and see her dad again! Wendy rose to her feet, taking one last look at the stagnant Willow. Carefully she reached out, making sure to avoid any sudden movements as dainty fingers slid a dirt flecked lighter from a rotting hand. Her zombified companion didn't seem to make any objection, didn't even notice. Wendy struggled with the lighter, finally figuring out just how to use it after several tries. As the tree finally burned into little more than a large, jagged string of musky black a warm flame rose from the tiny lighter, fending off the darkness. Willow finally moved, gaze shifting to stare at Wendy. Wendy held her breath, worried that she would be attacked. She wasn't, mercifully. She wished she could do something to help her former friend, some way to save her, but she was never good at scientific things like that. If only she could find Wilson, he was always good at that kind of stuff. She figured she wouldn't run into him, or that she wouldn't want to. "Goodbye Willow.." The words came out soft and meek, ebbing sadness hiding underneath them. For a second Wendy could swear she saw recognition in Willow's eyes, but all she got was an affirmative grunt before the zombie stared back at the rod of charcoal where a tree once stood. Wendy sighed, held the lighter tight, and walked off into the darkness once again. --- I have no idea where I'm going with any of this, like, at all. 23rd
23rd's Zombie BonanzaChapter 5: Asimov was wrong 1. A robot may not harm a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Another body dropped in front of WX-78, metal fingers ripping chunks of unidentifiable flesh from somewhere on Wolfgang's body. The former strongman had leaped at it like a rabid animal, groaning and screaming. That had been a mistake. The robot twitched spastically, gears whirring and churning as it dismembered the zombie in front of it. Blood splashed against the grass, rotting stench permeating the air. There were countless cadavers lumbering towards it, ready to replace Wolfgang in his attempt to destroy the automaton. It was going through them like potato chips, disposing of each with strength and bloodlust that shouldn't be possible, given its circuitry. The horde, for the first time since their inception, spoke out a single word in unison. "Stoppp..." Their grasp on WX-78 was becoming softer. They weren't trying to destroy it anymore, they were just trying to pull it off of whatever poor thing it was currently dismembering. 2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. The robot seemed to stop, for a moment. The horde was so relieved, at least until they realized their misconception. A sound, like that of an electronic bleat sounded through a megaphone, pierced the night. WX-78 was overheating, tendrils of black that oozed from the openings in its carapace whipping about in the morning light. A copper hand grabbed onto the nearest arm, and the creature it belonged to screamed. It didn't groan, it didn't gurgle.. it screamed. The horde wasn't closing in anymore, it was running away. Their limited understanding of the world had told them they didn't have any predators. They were supposed to be what struck fear in everything they crossed, to make things run in terror. No longer. WX-78's shoulders, followed by the metal plates and what little bits still held it together, began to shake. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. More of them were screaming now, as though they knew what was about to happen. The robot was beginning to melt, but that didn't stop it from rushing into the highest concentration of shambling corpses it could see. Bits of wet, burning metal dripped onto the grass as WX-78 leaped into the shuffling crowd, grabbing hold of as many limbs as it could. They sizzled when it touched them, rotten skin burning away to show bone. Liquid nightmares fell from the growing openings in its body as it prepared for the inevitable. In the final moments of its life it didn't think about the tragic mistake taking the Codex had been, it only thought of Wendy. Poor, terrified Wendy.. she had nobody to protect her, to watch over her. That had been its job, and it was clear it'd failed spectacularly. It only hoped that it was about to take out enough of these evil things to save her. Far off in the distance Wendy could hear all the screams mixing together, and the unholy sound that followed. Like a black hole opening up.. it sent a chill down the ridges of her spine. She just wanted to get out of this place. 23rd
Memories? "Performing feats of the MYSTERIOUS for your ENTERTAINMENT and EDIFICATION!" William couldn't help but jump a little at the booming announcer's voice as the curtain pulled away. He anxiously adjusted his glasses, trying to ignore the condensation that was beginning to block his condensation. Here he was, Bowery Hall. He was a long way away from London now, and despite the small crowd he was very nervous. This was the first time he'd done a performance without in America.. without the comfort of knowing the culture this was going to be difficult. "L- ladies and gentlemen.. for my first trick.." He stuttered through his first act, it was extremely cringeworthy. The trick was going well enough, at least. Pulling a rabbit from a hat may not have been the most exciting thing he could have done. but he did it without screwing it up. As the show went on William was easing into it, getting a little more comfortable. After a while his smile didn't even feel all that nervous. "For my next trick, I'll need a volunteer from the audience!" He hadn't even noticed the three of them sitting in the back of the theater, it was like they'd just appeared. The smile widened on Williams face when he recognized the little girl pulling away from her family, blonde hair bouncing as she trotted up to the stage. For the sake of the show, he had to ask her. "And what's your name, little girl?" She beamed up at him, giggling and showing rows of pearly white teeth. "Abigail!" "Now ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to saw little Abigail here in half! This trick isn't for the faint of heart, I hope you all brought your smelling salts!" It was a trick he'd practiced a hundred times before, he was confident that this was going to wow and amaze everyone in the theater. He'd even be able to show Jack how great he'd gotten! As his niece climbed into the box, feet sticking from one end and head from another, William grabbed his saw. Something black skittered underneath his feet. William's grip slipped, and he was staring at a growing crimson pool underneath the box. People were screaming, rushing for the exits and knocking each other over. The crowd was a lot bigger than it had been when the show started, and people were getting hurt and trampled in the resulting stampede. William's mouth hung open, staring in bewilderment. This wasn't possible, there was no way for her to actually die. What had happened, what had gone wrong? "YOU'RE A DEAD MAN!" William looked up to see Jack storming towards him, grabbing onto people and tossing them to the ground, stepping on necks in his rampage towards the stage. That twisted expression wasn't human, for a second it didn't even look like Jack so much as it did a horrible monster. He was ripping through people to get to the stage, killing aimlessly to clear a path towards a terrified William. A hairy, bulging hand clasped against the stage, Jack was climbing up.. Maxwell woke up screaming, out of breath. Wide eyes stared out in the darkness before him, the realization that he wasn't still back in America coming slowly. The Throne felt so much colder than it normally did, and somewhere in the distance he could hear Them laughing. It was a sick sound, more a gargle than a chuckle. He hung his head in his hands and sobbed. He was too far gone to remember the truth about his past, just what They showed him. 23rd
23rd's Zombie BonanzaChapter 6: They're coming to get you Wendy She used to be a librarian, lived a nice and quiet life. Never had to worry about where her next meal was coming from, hadn't had to fend for herself against all manner of creatures she'd have described as Lovecraftian (maybe people didn't like his works now, but give it 20 years! Oh, he'd be a big name, she knew that for sure.) and aside from one protest regarding the treatment of factory she'd never been a part of a large crowd. But hey, dying will change a woman. Wickerbottom's gray hair fell over her face with each shaky step she took, shifting her way through the hundred or so others she was traveling with. Most of them were bipedal pigs, she noticed. There was an odd tallbird here or there, even another person among them, but for the most part the mob was composed of pigs. She wasn't a mind reader, but she knew they all had but one thing on their mind. Every single one of them was hungry, and they were heading towards the nearest living thing they could find to feast. It may seem monstrous, but Wickerbottom understood. This hunger was painful. Not just painful, but painful. Every second she wasn't feasting she felt like her solar plexus was burning. Things like self-preservation and morals flew right out the window when she had to suffer a hunger like this. Finally, she was going to satiate it! She'd finally gotten to the front of the crowd, and she could see what they were all chasing after. She only vaguely recognized the person nearby. It was hard to tell it was Wendy without the pigtails, or the expression. Even compared to her, Wendy was expressionless. Now there she was, terrified and panicked. Huh. Wait.. what was that behind her? Oh no.. no, her meal was not going to get away from her. Wickerbottom shoved pigs out of the way, dashing forward as she ran for Wendy. Shadowy fingers enveloped the girl, threatening to pull her just out of Wickerbottom's grasp. All that cardio she'd gotten in the habit of doing when she was alive paid off, though. Green, rotting fingers wrapped around Wendy's ankle, and just like that the two of them were gone, whisked away from the infection-ridden world. lumitwilight
I wanted to wait until 2:00 AM to write this so I could make the joke work, but the idea really wants to be written down, and won't stop kicking around in my head, trying to get out. My grateful thanks to my friends the truthseeker and Xjurwi for instilling my mind with the brilliant concept in the first place. Figure in the Night What the hell had she just seen?! Willow's lighter immediately snuffed out, the area in front of her going pitch black as she raced towards the campfire that was moments from going out itself. Flammable things from bits of rope to sections of board were in a pile next to it, and letting instinct take over she immediately piled whatever she could into the fire. It was coming back to life, flames rising towards her as the radiating heat licked at her pale skin. Feeling the end of her right pigtail beginning to singe calmed her down. Nothing helped ease the panic quite like that burning smell, even if it was a part of her. Now she had a clearer head, and as long as the heat the fire gave off enveloped her she felt safe.. so safe. It was a little like being wrapped in the arms of someone you knew could protect you from any of the monsters under your bed, in your closet.. out in the darkness. Willow's eyes open again, as she tried to comprehend what she'd seen in that split second. It wasn't like the other monsters that she'd seen. In its own way, the thing had been beautiful. Well, it looked like it was beautiful, once. Its black hair was messy and ragged, but at the same time it looked so clean and well tended to, unlike the unwashed mess atop Willow's head. She could still see what looked like pieces of a formal dress, beautiful in the simplicity of its design. Willow had seen dresses like that on the front pages of newspapers back when she was a kid, people would wear them at fancy social events like when you go to the theater for plays and magic shows. She had no idea how long she'd been staring at the fire when she realized that the thing she saw.. well, glimpsed, really.. hadn't attacked her. Everything except for those gross pigs and hairy beast things tried to kill her the second they saw her, but not this monster. It just wanted her to put out the lighter.. "Excuse me.. Ms. Monster Lady? I'm sorry about the lighter.. I didn't mean to scare you." She hated how timid and frightened she sounded, like some sort of little girl. Her apology was met with silence for what felt like ages, and slowly she drifted off to sleep. After pleasant dreams of brick fireplaces and ham dinners Willow awoke to an exhausted fire and the smell of perfume. ..perfume? Rubbing her eyes groggily, she turned towards her fire to see a small note resting at the base of it, a petal from a red rose tumbling about at the edge of the parchment. It's okay, I know you like your lighter. I didn't mean to scare you either, I'm sorry! I made you something to make up for it.-Charlie Suddenly she became aware of a second smell. Sweet, yet so savory at the same time. Her mouth was practically drooling. Just underneath the note was a Honey Ham laid out on a grass weave that'd been made with care, and Willow couldn't keep the smile from spreading over her face.I always pictured Willow as a child, but this is still great!
