Modify Tentacle Spikes and/or Ham Bats to Make Both Useful without One Overpowering Another

Recommended Posts

Instead of me going into details why the Ham Bat update ruined getting Tentacle Spikes  and what is being suggested, I'll let these quotes speak for themselves:

Tentacle Spikes need a buff.

Agreed. I keep one as a backup if I can't make a new Ham Bat for a bit, but they really have no other purpose anymore.

they should do the same damage as the ham-bat. I thought they new hambat was between spear and T-spike level but testing it has proved otherwise

I'd say more uses, then it'd at least be in some way more useful

They either need more uses per spike or a damage bonus. Or some weird effect.

truth be told I'd have to agree, it should do a little less damage than the T-spike... say 45 in comparison to the T-spikes 51 (If i remember correctly)

that'd make the renewable weapon better than the spear and more expensive.
weaker than the T-Spike but it has infinite hits till it rots

I'd say that sounds fine at least

Ooooor the damage could scale down as it perishes.

not a bad idea at all, but I'd say more of a stage thing rather than constant following of the values

e.g:

Fresh: 55
Stale: 47
Spoiled: (same as spear)

something like that but maybe with tweaked values

The more crap you beat to death with a ham, the more tenderized it gets. Everyone knows that getting smacked with a tenderized piece of ham is much less painful than a fresh slab right off the pig.

Edit: dang it my format switching to manage the quote order removed my spoilers....spoil tagged.

Why would I even bother to get a Tentacle Spike now (and risk injury/Armor Durability) when i can just keep crafting Ham Bats?

Nah. By just derping around in a swamp, you find free tentacle spikes left and right. That doesn't even require a hambat to craft. Plus, tentacle spikes keep forever, while hambats will rot after 10 days, no matter what.

You underestimate how easily a Ham Bat can be crafted.

I'm liking the idea of the Hambat's damage going down as it rots, You get a weapon that has unlimited use and hits for a lot of damage, but slowly the damage degrades down and it spoils in 10 days.

Ok, think about this:

To get a tentacle spike, you can fight tentacles (not renewable), or fight a Big tentacle. The big tentacle is very hard to kill, and you might be killed while trying. It has a small chance of dropping the spike, but it's renewable. But why should you go throught all these problems if you can just kill a werepig and craft yourself a weapon that has infinite uses and does MORE damage than the spike?

Something being annoying to obtain does not make it nonrenewable.

No, I do not. For people with a steady supply of monster meat from whatever. That opinion is cominng from me: a guy who has not lived past day 30 with default settings. So, consider other noobs like me. Is it really that easy to collect monster meat early on when rushing for winter AND having bad health management?

I know killing a werepig gives equal drops to a hambat, but cmon. I think the rotting is balance enough. Personally, if you guys are disliking it's op-ness, then figure out how to return it to pre-update status, where it had a durability AND rotted in 10 days. That would be a great excuse to push up the damage further. Also, don't forget the caves. Anything better than a tentacle spike for caving IS A GODSEND.

No, I do not.

Yes you do.

Besides you don't even need to kill a Werepig to get it. Even newcomers manage to get Pig Skins and Meat easily. All you need are pigs. Because the bat is made of meat. So I have no idea why you wrote a paragraph about Monster Meat. It lasts for 10 days, so just make sure you get yourself meat very 10 days. If you can't even do that I suggest you spend your time getting better in the game instead of giving feedback on matters like this one.

Okay. Considering all this "even newcomers can get  a ham bat" thing, I reply "Even newcomers can get a tentacle spike". So what, a tentacle spike deserves a magical boost to make it equally useful to a hambat? Fine. Give a tentacle spike 200 uses, and see how that works. Its slightly lowered damage will compensate well for its increased uses.  In general, it is pretty easy to get either one, as you have demonstrated, but still.  Also, since when did you A) find a pig house near a savannah and B) use one meat to get it there? It takes ages for me to carry over or go and retrieve pigskins to make a pighouse or something else, and long distance pig-leading often results in pig mckamikaze running after a spider at dusk and killing itself.(I once led a pig expedition to fight clockworks, they all died because of a nest I missed before I got there).

In reply to other people, the scaling damage seems alright...until one realizes the flaw. Say one had to go caving, and it takes several days after crafting the hambat to make it there. Those who had inadequate foresight will have lost substantial damage for no reason. And if the damage at the lowest point becomes like that of a spear, there is no reason to use it(except for emergencies), as a spear will keep for more than a day.

A single morsel will make a pig follow you for half a day. Also using hammers to deconstruct Pig Houses to get materials is a common practice early on.

That's just bad luck on your part.

Make a pig house in your caves base.

Hammering two Pig Houses gives you material enough for one, much easier than burning through Monster Meat to get pig skins, only to still need to chop trees and mine boulders.

In this case the player can simply build a waypoint base around their sinkhole made for the purpose of stocking up on food and creating Ham Bats; making a Ham Bat when you know it won't keep for the time you need isn't an indication of a flaw in the weapon itself.

Ahem. Must I repeat myself?

THOSE WHO HAD INADEQUATE FORESIGHT  WILL HAVE LOST SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE FOR NO REASON.

Of course, if you want to plan and have the materials ready, go ahead. To err is human.  Frankly, I have grown tired of this debate. I personally prefer the weapons as they are, and frankly, may as well go  around slaying stuff with a dark sword instead of faffing about with a meat club, because dark swords are the best, provided one can manage sanity. Ham bat-keep it or nerf it, it's Klei's choice, and anyone who disagrees, I will personally take my time to write a mod that nerfs its damage or something.

THOSE WHO HAD INADEQUATE FORESIGHT  WILL HAVE LOST SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE FOR NO REASON.

That's irrelevant. Those with inadequate foresight will have problems with everything not just the weapons at hand.

THOSE WHO HAD INADEQUATE FORESIGHT WILL HAVE LOST SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE FOR NO REASON.

Well if we're resorting to shouting our responses, I suppose I'll repeat myself as well and say that points should not be made around someone not taking the time to plan out what they're doing.
