[Challenge] Nomad

Recommended Posts

There are many that build their bases big and strong . They seek shelter by surrounding themselves with walls and things.

This is not the way of the nomad.

Nomads are survivors of the wilderness. They have no need for walls, and they only carry with them what is needed.

What makes a successful nomad is his ingenuity. Use what you have on hand well, only take what you need, and only kill what you can use.

The Rules:

A nomad does not leave a mark on the world. By never leaving a trail they are never to be trailed. The nomad will never throw something out to be found. They never leave a structure up to alert others of the nomad's presence.

***

You can only build structures once a day when you settle into a temporary camp for the night. Once you place a structure down you must stay in that area until the next morning. This is your camp for the night. You must dismantle your camp just before morning begins.

Cannot build:

farms

pighouses

bunnyman hutches

beeboxes

iceboxes

chests

walls

Firepits with the stones count as a "night camp" structure, regular fires do not.

***

Nomads are true inhabitants of their world, never sheltered behind walls. Be keen and fierce, live by your wits and reflexes, and never fight a losing battle. Only the strongest survive in the wilderness. Are you strong enough, or will you starve?

I actually play the "nomadic style" to "gather resources to be more powerful for the next world."  That means all of that plus leaving before winter starts on Day 21. Backpacks work as "hobo chests"

So far I have "organically" found the Things, since your rules would in no way allow me to build an Alchemy Machine to make a Divining Rod (Since the Science Machine would be the 1 structure a day and if would be impossible to build the Alchemy one before destroying it before the nest day's activities unless you allowed pre-built items to place in another 24 hour window, which I am going with no in spirit.)

My most successful run using these rules was getting to World 4 with Wilson. At that point, I lost interest. Combining days, that's 62 days. Or 21 days times three if you don't.

I suppose it's a matter of opinion, but I find building and managing a base much more fun and engaging than wandering around randomly, driven only by an irrepressible lust for picking carrots and berries.

Why would I go picking carrots and berries? That is time consuming with little calories. Meat, that's where you get your fill. On top of that, you can setup a crockpot when you camp for the night to further increase your food's potency.

If you want to have the ability to go a few days without having to gather food, you need to be smart with how you manage.

I'm gonna run a game of this and post up some visual aids. =D (This variety is contagious)

What Ortoin said.

I'm guessing you also didn't know you can lure/kill rabbits with said berries and carrots when they are nibbling on it  and kill pigs, frogs and Beefalo with the morsel-meat-bribed pig friends while playing nomadicly?

(And save the carrots for winter, especially if playing nomadicy.)

Actually no, I was NOT aware that rabbits would go after berries, thanks for telling me that.

:o

No more standing between the rabbit and it's hole spamming F for me! Thank you!

I only knew the berry and gobbler trick; I set the gobbler's to "loads" before for fun and I had fun >:]

BTW, I used to be able to get birds by pressing force attack whilst holding a walking stick (because the increased speed allowed us to get to them before they fly). Save on boomerang/bird traps. I don't know whether it still works. I stopped doing it a while ago because it feels kinda OP. Will test tonight :p

But yeah. Meat. And Everything is kite-able (well, almost... I haven't been to the ruin, and I'm sure those thing that shoots bullet isn't kite-able).

Truly, once we learn how to kite this game became infinitely easier. No more "ooh eggs, noooooo it's mommy is making me cry mommy, eeeep why do I walk over the tier 3 spider nest, gah why do I attack that one innocent frog??"

It became "c'mere, food!"

(For the record, i do sometimes still mis-click on Beeefalo on a poop gathering and it becomes an attack command with me scrambling to move before the hit goes off...)

Yeah, you can't attack birds anymore without traps or ranged weapons, as that prior ability has now been fixed...twice technically.

Spoiler Alert:

Actually you can jsut place the traps on top of or very near the rabbit holes with no bait in them, and you will still catch just as many if not more rabbits.. you can also trap frogs and spiders this way

Yeah, about this... I'm sure most people here already knows :/ thanks though! :)

I think we have this conversation because people want to use ways of getting morsel/ spider drop / frog legs WITHOUT traps. I'm sick of making a thousand traps, and straw is more useful for a lot of other things. Like to make drying rack. Or even straw hats (bush hat/ miners hat).

There's nothing wrong with using traps, but you'll find as you play more you realised you hit a ceiling because you always run out of straw and time (running around collecting your trapped things, and also running around some more to get more straws) then you can't progress.

Traps are still good for one thing IMO: catch loads of rabbits (not for food!) to kill when I'm crazy to farm beard hair. Well, till I figure out how to farm it from beard lords/ black monkey thingie. (Beard lord should be easy. Get crazy, hold meat with a thousand traps between you and the bunneh (will add credit here once I found who said that)

I just realised that this game isn't about not starving, but time and inventory management. This may explain why the "experts" are ever so keen to burn people on a stake alive if they use the RPG HUD mod/backpack amulet slot, or even the one that adds dusk. Because you just nerf-ed the game and made THE point pointless...... Just my opinion :p

I survived the first winter in this challenge without any real issue. It's not an overly exciting challenge. Make sure to leave berries and stuff for winter, kill a koalafant and some beefalo for clothing and food, and just don't stop walking.

Out of curiosity, what weapons do you create to hunt the K when doing Nomadic?

Also, traps are the easiest way to quickly get rid of Spider waves when you are hunting them, especially to destroy and replant a tier 3 base!

I made a spear after learning as many recipes as I could one night. I set up a science machine after getting as many rocks/gold/grass/logs/etc as I could and made all the useful recipes I could think of. Most got thrown away, I just needed the ability to make them on the fly later.

I also used a t-spike for various things after I found a swamp.

Which one I used on the Koalefant itself I couldn't say for sure.
