Well, when i heard of the default + mode, i thought it was just something for the beginners who didn't know much about the game, so they can learn in an easier enviroment.

Booooy was i wrong.

Well, im playing as Wren (Custom Char) and there are spider nests EVERYWHERE, and every last one of them is either two or three tier, they've nearly driven all 3 of the pig villages i found to extinction, luckily in one of them was a pig king though, so infinite gold, (Did i mention the graveyard within a 5 minute walk?)

So, since im Wren, im pretty weak, and i can't really fight anything, i'd love to make some monster-jerky and cook it and make some honey nuggets or something, but near the end of the fight, either my pigs or the spiders end up eating all the meat >.< im only on day 8 and im struggling with problems i normally only encounter day 30+, those extra resources at the start are a godsend, and, considering the worldgen don't break the game in the slightest, so anyone else here had this type of experience with the default + preset? or is it just me that got this ridiculously good/bad world, (lots of good things, but tons of bad things)

Default+ is sort of Don't Starve's New Game+. It was intended for experienced players who were getting tired of the initial gathering and researching phase and wanted to skip right to base building, with the tradeoff that the world has fewer food resources and could become overrun with spider queens if the player isn't careful.

If you want, I think you can manually tweak Default+'s settings to get it closer to how a normal world generates, but still keep those spawn chests.

Yes, you can.

And it was made for an...accelerated timetable.

The extra boons counter the more...hazardous environments. Just remember, if you have trouble with spider dens, all you have to do is exterminate many of them.

However, if lucky, they will spawn next to Tallbirds and you can REALLY enjoy the "Circle of Life" way beyond any "Swamp Biome conflicts!"

That's Default + for you. How does the game describe it again? "A quicker start in a harsher world"? I think it was something like that. One thing you can try doing, assuming you don't know about this, is use the same traps you capture rabbits with to capture spiders. You just place however many on the edges of the webbing and lure them into it. Once they pass underneath they'll continue to chase you for a bit before getting caught underneath the trap when it falls. The great thing is that, unlike bunnies, it automatically kills them and gives you their loot when you harvest the trap.

The way you basically said "if you're having trouble with something, just kill it. Kill the hell out of it." is extremely funny to me.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot about frogs! Good thing truthseeker is here to pick up my slack. Trapping frogs is amazingly useful in A Cold Reception, one of the first three possible chapters of Adventure Mode. So, yeah, remember that.

My god. this has got to be the worst thing that happened to me.

So, in the morning, i hire a few pigs to go and take out a few hound-mounds, one of them stays overnight with me, and guess what? Full moon that night, so im forced to run around all night, starving to death and in the morning, hounds come, yay! so, the werepigs murder the hounds and im safe for a bit, (i did die last night, starved before i could get some berries out of my chest, and got resurected at my touchstone, so im in need of a new logsuit, so i go over to the spider-infested woods (and by spider-infested, i mean like 15 tier-3 spider dens right next to each other), so i needed to get rid of a few spider dens, so i went to light one on fire, little did i know i accidentally lit a spider on fire instead of the den, so he follows me around, igniting everything within a 5-mile radius, ending up burning down every single den in the forest, leaving 3 spider queens and a ton of homeless spiders out, theeeennnn its night-time and all the spiders basically charged towards me, and that was the end of that life.

Wow, you can capture spiders in traps? that would've been great to know early on so i could get some monsterjerky and take out some of those tier-2 nests before they escalated up to tier-3 and, well, read the above post

the second thing, yep, thats basically what i try to do, I figured Wren would be great for me considering i generally let other things kill off each other and go into collect the loot, lower health, greater speed, perfect for kiting and running the hell away when monsters start to fight each other, sadly, there wasn't much fighting eachother going on, more like murdering me.

If i had that world again, i'd go through it as link and just Din's fire everything to hell.

Also you can trap frogs this way. Circle of Life and that Circle is really a rope snare ;)

OH MY GOD I HELPED SOMEONE! ..ahem.. I love Wren, she's probably the only mod character I ever use, it's rare that any others fit the W naming theme (which is very important to me) and has an interesting playstyle that doesn't make her just a reskin of other characters. I should try Weazely, actually. He looked very promising.

Getting back on topic, you going to try it again? Your world ended in such a violent and insane way, it sounds like it had to have been an amazing amount of adrenaline and fun!

Yea, ill be playing again, Default + is pretty exciting, its the most fun i've had in don't starve, or any game, in a while

I think the downfall of this was i couldn't get a stable food supply, just about every day i was scavenging for food hoping to find some meat or something, and whenever things started to get rough, being a weaker character with nothing to fight for me, (which is probably a main strategy amongst lots of other people) i simply wasn't prepared for the sudden lack of allies and surge of enemies.

That's fantastic, I love hearing when someone has fun with a higher difficulty in a game! Once you feel like you've got the basic groove down you should definitely go in as Wes.

This is one of those games where, when it gets difficult, it's not impossible, but it's not ridiculously easy

and 9 times out of 10, when you die, its your fault, or the game just throws you into some completely un-winnable situation - E.g Beefallo heat, Middle of winter, Deerclops attack while being chased by hounds and mactusk n' son.

Thats happened to all of us atleast once, right?

regarding wes - As soon as i unlock him, he's not unlocked VIA experience and

maxwell
is the character you get for completing adventure mode, its like, a setpiece right?

Yeah, it's a random set piece in Adventure Mode. You'll have to fight a truckload of Chess Pieces as well should you be.. fortunate.. enough to find it. If you find it I'd make a base nearby, stock up on healing items and foods before each fight (they come in waves) and recover between fights.

There should be a preset called ""Default Spiders +"" Where there is nothing but spider floor, making you walk slower all the time unless you kill dens or dig up the turf, or, yknow, you could just set everything to less and spiders to lots :p

Not entirely sure of the ideal way to deal with chess monsters, i've never been able to make it to the ruins, and i never found the chess biome (believe me, I tried) well, i guess i could just bring in a few herds of beefallo in heat :p

Often times in one of the neighboring biomes (always a Rockyland, actually) to the Chess Biome, at least in Sandbox Mode, there's a damned armada of Spider Nests. I use that as a sign that I'm getting close, alongside the unholy nightmare that is Killer Bee Hive fields. Good stuff to keep in mind. I like you, I want to see you master this game!

Really, really recommend making an alchemy engine, burning down six trees for charcoal and making a crock pot ASAP, like before the end of day 2. Then start on the Drying racks.

With that chest of food, you can make some really nice advanced foods that will last several days. And if you are nearby a swamp, make a birdcage next, then you can live on bacon and eggs a long long long time. If you don't slaughter all the nearby spider nests, you can keep a few for farms, recycle the tier three dens, and don't starve.

Use the carrots, berries, and any monster meat you get while gathering stuff until this crock pot is up. Sanity isn't an issue since you'll be prototyping so much then.

Edit: Oh, and for the Chess Biome, if found early, just run away from the Rook monster and taunt it to defeat the other clockworks and marble items. Easy as pie.

That's what we need, pie recipes for the crock pot, mmmm, pie......

When I started playing as Wes on Default Plus worlds, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself having to think about food options again. After adjusting to 1.25x more rapid hunger rate, with a maximum capacity of 113, I found it quite fun to be honest. I'll get the belt of hunger as soon as possible and carry around with me a sewing kit, for long and arduous journeys. Also bacon and eggs, cuz dem is good.

I'll start having even more fun when I can generate a world on Default Plus mode that isn't either an extremely long turd-shaped isle or a bunch of wedges in a pretty star formation. Alas, it seems there is still no hope.

Oh wow, maybe i should've tried venturing through that spiderden forest, i might have found something

Wes seems like a really interesting character to play, i didn't even know about the hunger rate increase

Bacon and eggs? where did you get all the tallbird eggs, or can those be made with normal eggs as well?

When i was playing, i was playing as Wren so sanity wasn't much of a problem because she makes it rain whenever her sanity gets low, but i couldn't eat any monster jerky or monster meat because she's a picky eater apparently

I had a really good setup in my base on around day 7, i figured i could handle the neighboring spider nests because of two pig villages (1 with a pig king, yay)  thats basically how i killed nearly everything.

Bacon and eggs uses either two eggs or one tallbird egg. In Default Plus, your food chest starts with one tallbird egg. Use it for cooking or raise your own smallbird.

But you should use regular eggs for the B&E.

I guess it's easier to make a Spider farm than a Lureplant farm, but good point. Also sometimes feed it to pigs.

Yeah but the normal farm with traps will not yield enough meat for B&E. I think it's easier to make wooden flooring than pig houses.
