Worldgen discoveries-the experiment

Recommended Posts

I have often been puzzled at what "land branch" and "land loop" do in the worldgen settings of a world. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I have assembled a bunch of screenshots from 3 different worlds. Each world has either, default, minimal land loop/land branch, or maximum land loop/land branch.

See below:

Default worldgen:

Max land branch and land loop:

Minimal land branch and land loop(both on lowest setting)

What irks me the most is the land still branches even with land branch turned off. I was expecting the world would be one big polygonal figure (with jagged edges of course), but why does it still branch?

Any theories on why this happens?

Another thing I observed is that the land tends to compress and widen at branch points, which doesn't seem to be very stable. Not to mention, geographically, that  if an island branch naturally was formed like that, erosion would soon detach that branch from the rest of the island.(not that I'm proposing natural erosion, of course)

Is there something in worldgen that smooths the edges of the map and regenerates a new world if the smoothing cuts off land?

Please explain, devs: How does worldgen work as of the latest update of Don't starve?

Why didn't you include shots of the entire maps?

couldn't zoom out. Is there a hotkey or something? I was using the better compass mod to reveal the entire map.

I now feel stupid for not finding that which you posted. At least my thread still has some purpose.

You just use the mouse wheel to zoom out. If it's not working go take a look at the controls.

Didn't know some people compiled this in one spot, thanks! Still doesn't fully illustrate the annoying pain in the butt those "wedges" do in exploring since Six Feet Under.

I'm gonna go hunt for that quote of one of the devs telling me that they changed nothing about world gen in the Six Feet Under update. I've made a thread about this too. This issue needs to be addressed.

EDIT:

post-285855-0-22889200-1382341333_thumb.

The maps have definitely changed and it's affecting your experience whether or not you like it or are willing to admit it. The only arguments against reverting the Six Feet Under map generation change(s) have been "I don't really mind," "I haven't generated a new world after the update," "at least it's not as bad as the circular islands and bridges," etc. This change was unnecessary and does not improve anything, if not drastically reduce enjoyment for people.

Perhaps this was an incident of silently "experimenting" with the default settings of world generation, hoping that no one would notice? I can't understand the point to this.

There's been a lot of talk but no real proof from you. If your really want them to do something, make screenshots of the different maps that generate and compare them to the ones in the post i linked. If they indeed changed, make a post about this in the testing subforum showing the pictures as proof. Kind of like i did with the mobs pathfinding.

Problem is, I have very few screenshots of maps before the Six Feet Under update (since it still wasn't an issue back then). Your pictures are maps that have modified settings, not defaults which we are talking about here. I have already posted a bunch of pictures after the current update in a few threads and compared them, but not in the testing sub-forums yet. People with more pre-update pictures would have to contribute in that case. Until then I'll keep getting evidence from the current faulty map generation.

Then alter the same settings and compare them.

There was NO CHANGE to the map generation - those jagged edges and stuff everyone is talking about is nonsence! I have 3 maps prior to Six Feet update, two from BEFORE CAVES and other one right after Powers update - there is none of that you are talking about, the sharp edges were there, some spaz roads too, even the biome inside biome – just look at this one default/default example: http://postimg.org/image/k1q10jxo7/

I swear to Crom's mighty balls, that I checked everything I could closely. I was concerned, but no, maps have the same features as they had before Six Feet Under update.
