There's always one in big biomes in my experience and the likelihood of one spawning is random and you can't do anything about it. Rocky or savanna biomes are the best place to hunt as the dirt pile stands out.

That's true. But I was thinking about moving into a large expanse, far enough away from other land that any ignored suspicious dirt pile there would be removed and respawn into your current biome. Thus, if you kept making regular circles around a large savannah biome for instance, you would eventually find one.

That's what i meant with "There's always one in big biomes". And they don't get removed and respawn in another place. There's multiple ones at once in a world and when you start following one the others disappear.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

I'd love it if they appeared in Savannahs for me. Instead I always get tracks in dense Forests, surrounded by trees. Maybe I should stop settling down in the Forests that are always next to the Pig King, but I swear the tracks always appear in every Forest on the map and nowhere else.

There's a map mod in the downloads section made by someone named eLe, the "standard" version.  I knicked the code to check out certain things.  One thing I've checked is how Suspicious Dirt Piles are created.

I've only noticed one Dirt Pile in the world at a time.  Also, I think the best way to make one appear is to go down a longish peninsula biome and return.  Assuming you've traveled far enough, you should see one pop up either on the way out or on the way back in (walk around with CTRL+L log visible to confirm).  The oftenest I've been able to get a pile to form is about one every day and a half or so.

Most (all) of it should be in hunter.lua and the tuning.lua files.  I wasn't able to read and understand it 100%; that's why I had to check things out in-game and look at it.

Shouldn't be a problem, now that all maps by default are ugly star-shaped peninsulas...

So today I found two different Koalefant tracks (at separate times, of course) in rock biomes where they were crazy visible. Both times they sent me into forests where the trail went cold and the tracks must have been behind one of the 50 trees clouding my screens. This game has become sentient and is screwing with me, or the Koalefants are. Either way I'm killing a Koalefant, making it into a Hambat, and using it to kill another Koalefant if it kills me.

It seemed worth sharing.
