Glad that 2/3 of the characters received a ST, but I hope everyone else gets one too. Personally, I'm most excited to see Wickerbottom's and Warly's, as I feel they have the potential to be the best. Maxwell and Wanda already seem to be in a very good position in the game, I still have difficulty imagining what theirs will be like. Wes's intrigues me, but along with Webber's, they are the ones I'm least excited about.

It's really close between Warly, Webber, and Wickerbottom for me. I feel like these can be extremely fun characters if their skill tree is done just right, and is where I feel the singular character focus can really shine.

I'm really scared for Webber in particular though, if he gets the Wurt treatment he will be ruined for me forever. I do not want statstick spiders with 2 lives and a million different ways to survive everything, I want to be a commander and raise his skill ceiling through commands and support. Also, PLEASE PLEASE a way to store spiders in spider dens, like a pikmin onion.

Warly and Webber's for sure, i'd love to see how they could elevate Warly's portable chef gameplay, and for Webber i'd love to see him being able to utilize spider themed abilities and crafts rather than enhancements to spiders (seeing as how his entire rework was minion related). That's just me personally though! :wilson_flower:

Honestly Webber is the one I'm most curious about as spider nurses could make even the most tame survivability improvements lead to invincibility for his spiders but at the same time I'd doubt they'd skip over giving them upgrades for planar interactions. This is made even more interesting by the fact that as the original follower survivor the only thing his spiders offer is combat abilities. Part of me wonders if his skill tree will be the inverse of Wurt's where the primary focus becomes skills that impact Webber himself like learning the skills of the various spiders with minor focus on his minions. Even then it feels like even the slightest minion combat improvements could lead to a a Wurt situation.

Warly would be the other character I'm curious about as most of his dishes have been powercrept even if he still has alot of uses a lot of characters have similar abilities and for a lot less effort so it makes me wonder what angle they'll approach him from.

Wickerbottom... She is the only character in the game who uses her own perks worse than a completely different character. She is also the only character without any actual integrated self perks, all she has is items... Even Warly has some stuff only he can use, Wickerbottom you ONLY pick in order to swap into Maxwell.

I really hope that this issue of Maxwell using her books gets "fixed" when her skill tree comes out. If not this time, it never will. It needs to be mitigated somehow, at least.

The fix is as easy as removing Maxwell's reading tag that lets him read her books... The only reason they haven't is because Maxwell players are very vocal and QUITE against the idea of not being able to use another character's skills without having to play them.

I think Webber. Everybody else's kits are pretty much complete and are only open for new additions while Webber mechanically is just terrible. All he can do right now is command the lag machine army to aggro and deaggro. Without spiders he's a worse Wilson, with spiders he's a worse Wurt

''force'' Wickerbottom to be more 'intreresting' character by capping maxwell form reading wikibottoms' books
Terribile idea, no thanks

You're quoting words I didn't even use...? Also, how is it a terrible idea for a character to be the only one who can use their own abilities...? I am very confused.

Is this ragebait, is it lack of reading comprehension... Wat?

Wanda, solely because I'm curious if klei is actually going to give her even more tools to play with, or if she's gonna get the Wolfgang special™ (a terrible skill tree with next to nothing interesting/fun)

I would choose Warly. As a support-type character, he should always be available to contribute to the team's progress. However, his current best strategy is to replace the adventurer in the celestial portal, produce a batch of dishes and seasonings, and then switch back. The update of the skill tree is hoped to enable Wally to become a more cost-effective character that can stay in the game.

I dunno, I feel like the whole "Wickerbottom is a swap character that you only play in order for Maxwell to use her own perks" is kinda overblown IMO. This point feels like something that only applies to people playing solo who are all about maximizing efficiency, rather than the "together" portion of the game. And while I'm not saying to disregard players points who only play solo, the context of "swap characters" can change radically depending on where they're being played. Maybe I'm not the best person to talk about this considering I tend to ride solo, but in a group setting, isn't it a good thing for two people to use the same item type instead of just telling the other person to kick rocks and play someone else? Like, if the Wickerbottom is going to the caves to get some resources but also wants to cultivate farm crops when they come back up, wouldn't it be great for the Maxwell player to read her farming books to collect said crops sooner before the Wickerbottom goes topside? Also, it's kind of funny to claim that the stuff in Warly's kit makes him less of a "swap character" compared to Wickerbottom due to having more stuff to interact with. While it's true that no one else is capable of using his portable cookware, the outputs from said cookware can be consumed by everyone, whereas Wickerbottom's books can only be used by one other character.

I feel like this is the nuclear option to go for when solving this "issue". I feel like a better approach is to do what they did for Winona's skilltree, where everyone can still use her catapults but Winona gets more mileage from them by arming them quicker, tuning up their fire rate, or target firing at a specific area. Once Wickerbottom's skilltree arrives, Maxwell players would still be able to read Wickerbottom's books, with the librarian herself being able use them more efficiently, either by getting more uses out of them, lowering the sanity cost, getting a faster casting animation, or by having the book's effects be more powerful.

if we remove my self-interest then wicker, if we allow my bias as a foodie then it must be warly. both have a LOT of potential given that they have a level of personality already that is on-par with what a skill-tree update offers so their upgrades would certainly be exciting to see(even if i know that people always complain loudly and aggressively about change being both too much and not enough in equal measure)

To the first point. The issue of being a swap character isn't just an efficiency/balance issue, it's an enjoyment issue.

It feels awful playing coop and watching a Maxwell use your own books way better than you, it feels like there's no point in me playing the character I like.

To the second point. How is it a nuclear point for a character with HER OWN unique items, to be the only one to use HER OWN unique items?

Whenever I see responses to people saying she should be the only one to use her books it's never anything concrete or direct, it's always "You're overreacting", "Who let's not go too far".

I want the character I PICKED to be the only character to use THEIR OWN abilities.

I don't want other characters to have BERNIE!, I don't want other characters to have their own Abigail, I don't want other characters to use Codex Umbra.

And I don't want Maxwell to use Wickerbottom's books. :)

I don't think we gotta worry about that as she's one of the weaker characters at this point. She's got the latest game teleportation skill out the characters who have them and the least convenient one to use at that. Not to mention She's the only teleporter with a cooldown.

She's low on the list of revival ability characters and everyone's got a combat ability these days. So she's lacking in every category excluding towards those who haven't received trees yet.

Honestly I don't think it works she's in a situation where if everyone could use Abigail and reap all the benefits. If the game were single player I doubt many would care but in a team setting having a character who is just you but better will never sit right with most people who main a character. It's where a lot of character conflicts began and why I'd imagine Klei started down the path of make everyone good at everything which did quite a lot of the complaints but at the cost of character uniqueness.
